Greenhouse and aquaponic productions of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) are well established, but the comparison between these two methods is not studied in detail. A study was conducted to evaluate the performance of basil in both aquaponic and soil systems under greenhouse conditions. The plants were raised in aquaponic beds with ornamental fish and a set of plants was raised in soil pots under a greenhouse setup. The studied parameters were morphological, biochemical and antioxidant levels. In order to analyze the stress effects of an aquaponic system on plant defense mechanism, two different antioxidant enzymes (catalase and peroxidase) were analyzed. Water quality parameters were monitored during the entire study period. Based on the results, there was a significant increase in growth parameters in the aquaponic system when compared to the conventional greenhouse cultivation of basil plants. The photosynthetic parameters showed a decline in the aquaponic system, but the biochemical parameters showed an enhancement in the aquaponic system of growing basil plants. The antioxidants exhibited a significant increase in the aquaponic system, which suggests a water stress effect on the plants induced by the aquaponic growing system. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the aquaponic system is the best suitable method for basil production in the UAE condition.
Haloxylon persicum is an endangered western Asiatic desert plant species, which survives under extreme environmental conditions. In this study, we focused on transcriptome analysis of H. persicum to understand the molecular mechanisms associated with drought tolerance. Two different periods of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced drought stress (48 h and 72 h) were imposed on H. persicum under in vitro conditions, which resulted in 18 million reads, subsequently assembled by de novo method with more than 8000 transcripts in each treatment. The N50 values were 1437, 1467, and 1524 for the control sample, 48 h samples, and 72 h samples, respectively. The gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis resulted in enrichment of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and plant hormone signal transduction pathways under PEG-induced drought conditions. The differential gene expression analysis (DGEs) revealed significant changes in the expression pattern between the control and the treated samples. The KEGG analysis resulted in mapping transcripts with 138 different pathways reported in plants. The differential expression of drought-responsive transcription factors depicts the possible signaling cascades involved in drought tolerance. The present study provides greater insight into the fundamental transcriptome reprogramming of desert plants under drought.
The present study was carried out to assess the status of various hormones responsible for the flower induction of Nagal, Lulu, and Khalas date palm varieties in UAE. The nonenzymatic antioxidant compounds and the antioxidant enzymatic activities at preflowering, flowering, and postflowering stages of the date palm varieties were quantified. The ABA and zeatin concentrations were found to be significantly higher during the preflowering stage but gradually decreased during the flowering period and then increased after the flowering stage. Gibberellic acid (GA) concentrations were significantly higher in the early flowering varieties and higher levels of ABA may contribute to the delayed flowering in mid and late varieties. The results on hormone profiling displayed a significant variation between seasons (preflowering, flowering, and postflowering) and also between the three date palms (early, mid, and late flowering varieties). Ascorbic acid (AA) concentration was low at the preflowering stage in the early flowering Nagal (0.694 mg/g dw), which is similar with the late flowering Lulu variety (0.862 mg/g dw). However, Khalas variety showed significantly higher amount of AA content (7.494 mg/g dw) at the preflowering stage when compared to other varieties. In flowering stage, Nagal (0.814 mg/g dw) and Lulu (0.963 mg/g dw) were similar with respect to the production of AA, while the mid flowering variety showed significantly higher amount of AA (9.358 mg/g dw). The Khalas variety produced the highest tocopherol at 4.78 mg/g dw compared to Nagal and Lulu, at 1.997 and 1.908 mg/g dw, respectively, during the preflowering stage. In Nagal variety, the content of reduced glutathione (GSH) at the preflowering stage was 0.507 mg/g dw, which was not significantly different from the flowering and postflowering stages at 0.4 and 0.45 mg/g dw, respectively. The GSH was significantly higher in Khalas compared to Nagal and Lulu varieties, at 1.321 mg/g dw in the preflowering phase followed by 3.347 mg/g dw and 2.349 mg/g dw at the flowering and postflowering phases, respectively. Catalase activity increased with different stages of growth. The lowest catalase activity was observed at the preflowering stage in Khalas (0.116), with similar observations noted during flowering (0.110) and postflowering stage. This study provides an insight into the possible roles of endogenous hormones and antioxidants and in the activities of antioxidant enzymes in the regulation of flower development in date palm varieties.
Seed priming is a cost-effective and efficient pre-sowing technique that promotes seed germination and plant growth under abiotic stress. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different priming treatments on breaking the dormancy of ghaf (Prosopis cineraria L. Druce) seeds. Furthermore, the effects of storage conditions and seed coating on seed germination were examined. Treatments with hot water, KNO3, KCl, polyethylene glycol (PEG), H2SO4, gibberellin (GA3), cytokinin benzyl adenine (BA), and H2SO4 + BA were investigated. Among all the tested treatments, seeds responded the best to the H2SO4 50% 2 min + BA (200 ppm) priming treatment in terms of germination uniformity and effectiveness. This treatment initiated germination 5 days after sowing and increased the germination percentage from 11.32% in the untreated seed to 83% and 100% in the primed ones after 5 and 20 days, respectively. The germination percentage and primary root length were shown to be more responsive to this combined treatment, followed by the H2SO4 50% 2 min+ BA 100 ppm. This treatment achieved the best result of 100% germination when the seeds were covered in a seed ball. Additionally, the treated seeds could be stored at room temperature or 4 °C for more than 10 days with no negative effect on the germination. Based on these findings, this treatment could be recommended to farmers and plant producers to boost the mass production of ghaf trees.

Introduction: Grapevines are an important and economically significant fruit plant that is cultivated worldwide. Most of the world’s emerging wine-growing regions are in arid or semi-arid regions that are severely affected by drought. Grafting has emerged as an effective strategy to enhance drought tolerance, but the influence of scion–rootstock combinations on key biochemical and antioxidant parameters under water deficit conditions is not fully understood. Method: The study investigates the effects of grafting on antioxidant enzymes, malondialdehyde (MDA), polyamines and sugar metabolism in five grafted grapevine combinations exposed to three irrigation levels to optimise sustainable grape production in the arid regions of the UAE. Leaf samples were analysed for polyamines, MDA and sugars using liquid chromatography. Results: The study found that the drought-tolerant rootstocks Paulsen, R110 and Ramsey increased cell activity, reduced ROS production, lowered MDA levels and increased antioxidant capabilities. SOD activity increased significantly under 75% and 50% FC by 225% in V1, 316% in V3, 133% in V4 and 1025% in V5. In response to severe drought at 75% and 50% FC, V2 and V5 showed a decrease in MDA accumulation (by 34.2% and 50% in V2 and 23.7% and 57.6% in V5, respectively) compared to 100% FC (0.76 nmoL mL−1 in V2 and 1.18 nmoL mL−1 in V5). Polyamines generally showed an increase with decreasing field capacity, indicating drought tolerance. Different polyamine contents were observed in grafted vines. V1, V2 and V5 showed higher levels of spermine and free spermidine, while V3 and V4 were more sensitive to drought stress. Organic osmolytes positively influenced the enzymatic activity in drought-tolerant grafts. Sugars built up in the grafts and had a signalling function as Osmo protective molecules. The shoots improved sugar metabolism, which led to increased resistance to drought. There was a significant increase in glucose sugar content at 75% and 50% FC, which was 85.7% to 133% at V1, 19% to 76.9% at V2, and decreased by 30% and 53% at V4.Discussion: The results suggest that grafted grapevines have a strong ability to cope with drought stress by upregulating antioxidant enzymes and altering other compounds such as MDA, PA and sugars that are conducive to stress tolerance.
