Biography

My research focuses on numerical modelling of coastal and shelf sea hydrodynamics, sediment and material transport, and the interactions between physical and biogeochemical processes. I develop tools for real-time data extraction from global oceanographic and meteorological stations, as well as from models, to support operational oceanography. My work includes forecasting storm surge, waves, and particle dispersion. I have contributed to coastal engineering projects involving sediment transport, effluent dispersion modelling for wastewater disposal, seagrass wrack transport, and optimizing breakwater designs to reduce environmental impacts. A key achievement is the development of ozROMS, a high-resolution 3D hydrodynamic model covering the Australian continental shelf and adjacent seas, with a 20-year hindcast simulation that offers insights into boundary currents around Australia. Additionally, I have advanced understanding of how thunderstorms and volcanic eruptions trigger meteotsunamis by incorporating complex physical processes into models, improving prediction and early warning systems. My work includes wave and surge forecasting systems for regions such as Western Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Malaysia, contributing to enhanced coastal hazard preparedness.
