Graduated in Medicine (Federal University of Pará, Belém -1982), PhD in Medicine and Health (Federal University of Bahia, Salvador-1999), and postdoctoral fellow (University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, USA-2002/2003). Research physician at the Evandro Chagas Institute (IEC) and head of the Arbovirology and Hemorrhagic Fever Section (1998-2014). Director of the Evandro Chagas Institute from 2014-2019. Director of the WHO/PAHO Collaborating Center for Research and Reference on Arboviruses based at the IEC (1998-2019). Coordinator of the National Reference Laboratory for Dengue, Yellow Fever, Chikungunya, West Nile and other arboviruses based at the IEC (1998-2019). Fellow (International Honorary Member) of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (2018). CNPq level 1A productivity researcher. Adjunct professor at the State University of Pará (UEPA), as professor of General Pathology (2012-2019); coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Parasitic Biology in the Amazon. Directly participated in the isolation and characterization of more than 10,000 viral isolates and in the taxonomic identification of more than 100 new viruses for science. He coordinated the team at the Evandro Chagas Institute that originally demonstrated to the world that the Zika virus causes Microcephaly and other congenital malformations.
