In this study, raw corn silk was considered for the removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solutions. In order to improve adsorption characteristics, the KOH treatment was applied as a route to obtain modified materials. Both materials before and after metal adsorption were characterized by pHPZC, SEM-EDX and FTIR analysis. SEM images and FTIR spectra revealed that alkali modification caused some structural changes that could improve the adsorption properties of the investigated material. The experimental results and the ion-exchange study revealed that the biosorption process of cadmium ions on to raw and modified corn silk was caused predominantly by the ion-exchange mechanism, followed by chemisorption. The kinetic parameters implied that there are three stages in the biosorption process. In addition, the cadmium adsorption on both materials is very fast and is followed by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The experimental results were fitted by two and three parameter isotherm models, while the Sips isotherm model best describes the biosorption process on both materials. According to the Sips isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacity of cadmium adsorbed on modified materials was 49.06 mg g−1, which is 2.23 times greater in comparison to the raw material (21.96 mg g−1). Furthermore, the mechanisms of cadmium adsorption onto the investigated materials are summarized in order to better understand the modification influence on the adsorption properties of corn silk. In order to examine reusability of the investigated material, diluted nitric acid was used for regeneration. A desorption study was performed in three adsorption-desorption cycles. A high desorption efficiency (˃85%) indicated that MCS after Cd adsorption can be efficiently recovered and reused for a new adsorption cycle.

A calcium-pyro-hydrochar (Ca-PHC) can be distinguished as a novel sorbent of Pb2+ and Cd2+ from an aqueous solution. It was obtained using hydrothermal treatment of the spent mushroom substrate (SMS), followed by a CaCl2·5H2O activation and pyrolysis. The characterisation of chars before and after modifications was done by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Batch experiments were performed to examine Ca-PHC’s sorption properties and binding mechanisms to selected metal ions. The maximum sorption capacities of Ca-PHC for Pb2+ and Cd2+ were 297 mg g−1, and 131 mg g−1, respectively. The obtained results demonstrated that the sorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ by Ca-PHC follows a pseudo-second kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm. The binding of the selected metals onto Ca-PHC was enabled by the ion-exchange mechanism, surface complexation, mineral precipitation and cation–π interaction. Thermodynamic parameters indicate that metal ions binding by Ca-PHC are spontaneous and endothermic. Due to the high adsorption capacities, the obtained Ca-PHC has good potential for application in industrial wastewater treatment. In addition, the demonstrated use of SMS highlights another possibility of applying this specific biomass relevant to sustainable and economical waste management in the growing mushroom industry.

The removal of water pollutants, specifically the organophosphorus pesticides chlorpyrifos (CHP) and azinphos-methyl (AZM), as well as the dye Rhodamine B (RB), was investigated through the valorization of grape pomace, an abundant agricultural byproduct. For the first time, hydrochars derived from grape pomace were utilized as adsorbents for these contaminants following KOH activation (HCK) and pyrolysis at 400 °C (PHC). The study aimed to evaluate the adsorption performance, determine the optimal conditions, and elucidate the adsorption mechanisms. Physicochemical characterization using SEM, FTIR, BET surface area analysis, stability, and pHPZC measurements revealed distinct differences in surface morphology, functional groups, porosity, and surface charge. Under optimized conditions, maximum adsorption capacities reached 751.0, 3.98, and 1.39 mg g−1 for RB, CHP, and AZM, respectively, on HCK, and 616.0 (RB), 30.10 (CHP), and 9.15 mg g−1 (AZM) on PHC, indicating that the selected hydrochars efficiently removed the investigated pollutants from water. Kinetic modeling demonstrated pseudo-first-order adsorption for RB and CHP on HCK and pseudo-second-order adsorption for AZM on HCK and all pollutants on PHC. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that adsorption processes were spontaneous and favorable, with enhancements dependent on temperature. These findings suggest that HCK is particularly effective for cationic dyes, while PHC exhibits greater affinity toward organophosphorus pesticides, offering complementary applications and providing new mechanistic insights into hydrochar-based pollutant removal.

This study investigated the influence of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) at 5 and 15 phr on the properties of silica-filled styrene-butadiene /polyisoprene (SBR/NR) rubber blends intended for boot tread production. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy evaluated the performance of the resulting SBR/NR/NBR composites with Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR), which confirmed interactions between the rubber matrix and the silica filler. In addition, changes in thermal and mechanical properties, as well as cross-linking parameters, were systematically examined. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) are used to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structural, thermal, and mechanical behavior of silica-reinforced SBR/NR/NBR composites. The rheological characteristics of the tested composites were examined as a function of the mixture ratio. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed variations in the sample’s surface roughness and morphology with varying rubber blend ratios. The findings confirmed that incorporating NBR improves filler dispersion, increases cross-link density, and enhances mechanical properties, including hardness and tensile strength, while also influencing thermal stability and curing behavior. The results suggest the potential of these composites for reliable, efficient sole manufacturing in the footwear industry, where durability, strength, and processability are critical requirements.
