This article proposes an alternative constraint handling technique for the four-bar linkage path generation problem. The constraint handling technique that is traditionally applied uses an exterior penalty function, and has been found to be inefficient, particularly when dealing with constraints on the input angles. The new technique deals with both input crank rotation and Grashof's criterion. Four classical path generation problems are used to test the performance of the proposed technique. A new adaptive teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO) scheme is used to solve several optimization problems. This technique is referred to here as teaching–learning-based optimization with a diversity archive (ATLBO-DA), and was specifically developed for this design problem. The results show that this new design concept gives better results than those of previous work, and that ATLBO-DA is superior to the original version and other metaheuristic algorithms.

This paper presents a novel constraint handling technique for optimum path generation of four-bar linkages using evolutionary algorithms (EAs). Usually, the design problem is assigned to minimize the error between desired and obtained coupler curves with penalty constraints. It is found that the currently used constraint handling technique is rather inefficient. In this work, we propose a new technique, termed a path repairing technique, to deal with the constraints for both input crank rotation and Grashof criterion. Three traditional path generation test problems are used to test the proposed technique. Metaheuristic algorithms, namely, artificial bee colony optimization (ABC), adaptive differential evolution with optional external archive (JADE), population-based incremental learning (PBIL), teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO), real-code ant colony optimization (ACOR), a grey wolf optimizer (GWO), and a sine cosine algorithm (SCA), are applied for finding the optimum solutions. The results show that new technique is a superior constraint handling technique while TLBO is the best method for synthesizing four-bar linkages.

Internal structural layouts and component sizes of aircraft wing structures have a significant impact on aircraft performance such as aeroelastic characteristics and mass. This work presents an approach to achieve simultaneous partial topology and sizing optimization of a three-dimensional wing-box structure. A multi-objective optimization problem is assigned to optimize lift effectiveness, buckling factor and mass of a structure. Design constraints include divergence and flutter speeds, buckling factor and stresses. The topology and sizing design variables for wing internal components are based on a ground element approach. The design problem is solved by multi-objective population-based incremental learning (MOPBIL). The Pareto optimum results lead to unconventional wing structures that are superior to their conventional counterparts.
