Biography

Luc Duchateau is Full Professor of Biometrics at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University, Belgium. He received the MSc degree in Agricultural Engineering from the KU Leuven (1987), a master of Biostatistics degree from UHasselt (1994) and a Ph.D. in agricultural engineering (1995) from KU Leuven. His main specialty is the frailty model, about which he published numerous papers and an influential book (Duchateau, L. and Janssen, P. (2008). The frailty model. Springer Verlag). Currently he continues to work on multivariate survival data, using copula and transformation models. He also specialized in vector control for malaria, trypanosomosis and tick-borne diseases with substantial and relevant output. For that part of his research, he has been active in East Africa, mainly Ethiopia, in many projects for the last 25 years. A recent new research effort is the merging of machine learning with survival analysis techniques to predict time to disease for different use cases in veterinary medicine, e.g., hip dysplasia in dogs and chronic kidney disease in cats.
