Biography

Dr. Laura Hamilton is a neuroscientist specializing in adult neurogenesis, lipid metabolism, and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. She is a Research Associate at the CRCHUM in the lab of Dr. Martine Tétreault. She earned her Ph.D. in Pathology and Cell Biology at Université de Montréal and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at CRCHUM. Her work, supported by the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, FRSQ, and APDA has been published in high impact journals including Cell Stem Cell, Nature Communications, and Brain. Her research focuses on stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) enzymes, key regulators of lipid synthesis. She demonstrated that SCD inhibition reverses cognitive, synaptic, and immune impairments in Alzheimer’s models. Her work also extends to Parkinson’s disease, examining shared metabolic and cellular dysfunctions between AD and PD. Dr. Hamilton’s team uses cutting-edge genomics technologies, including long-read sequencing, multiomic profiling, and functional assays to uncover disease mechanisms and identify therapeutic targets in neurodegeneration.
