The stability of steel-slag road materials remains a critical issue in their utilization as an aggregate base course. In this pursuit, the present study was envisaged to investigate the effects of fly ash on the mechanical properties and expansion behavior of cement-fly-ash-stabilized steel slag. Strength tests and expansion tests of the cement-fly-ash-stabilized steel slag with varying additions of fly ash were carried out. The results indicate that the cement-fly-ash-stabilized steel slag exhibited good mechanical properties. The expansion rate and the number of bulges of the stabilized material reduced with an increase in the addition. When the addition of fly ash was 30–60%, the stabilized material was not damaged due to expansion. Furthermore, the results of X-CT, XRD and SEM-EDS show that fly ash reacted with the expansive component of the steel slag. In addition, the macro structure of the stabilized material was found to be changed by an increase in the concentration of the fly ash, in order to improve the volumetric stability. Our study shows that the cement-fly-ash-stabilized steel slag exhibits good mechanical properties and volumetric stability with reasonable additions of fly ash.

This paper investigates the effect of curing regimes (standard and steam curing) on the mechanical strength, hydration, and microstructure of ecological ultrahigh-performance concrete (EUHPC). The flowability, compressive strength, flexural strength, hydration, porosity, pore size distribution, and microstructure of UHPC with different contents of supplementary materials (silica fume, fly ash, and ground granulated blast furnace slag) were assessed. The test results showed that the compressive strength of EUHPC under steam curing was increased considerably compared to that under standard curing, while the flexural strength was mildly decreased. The steam curing could decrease the porosity of EUHPC, which ranged between 7% and 9% for standard curing, and between 3.5% and 5% for steam curing. The aperture of EUHPC was below 20 nm, mainly located in the range of 10 nm to 20 nm under standard curing, while it was less than 10 nm for steam curing. C–S–H gel was produced under steam curing, while unhydrated fly ash, mineral powder, and Ca(OH)2 crystal were observed in the amorphous C–S–H gel. The microstructure of EUHPC under steam curing was denser than that under standard curing, and the interfacial transition zones under both curing regimes were compact.

In order to explore the microscopic mechanism of the remarkable improvement of the organic polymer on the mechanical properties of the geopolymer, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscope and molecular imprinted polymer were used to investigate the effects of polyacrylate (PAAS) on the microstructure of the metakaolin-based geopolymer (MKG). The load-deflection curves were also tested to confirm the toughing effect. The results show that the organic polymer can modify the structure of the geopolymer at the molecular scale and submicroscopic scale. At the molecular scale, Si–O–C bonds formed in MKG after the incorporation of PAAS and the polymerization degree of [SiO4] tetrahedra reduced resulting in the mean chain length of [SiO4]/[AlO4] tetrahedra change. At the submicroscopic scale, the MKG became denser after adding PAAS because PAAS could fill the cracks and capillary pores of MKG. Also, PAAS formed a film with an interconnected network structure, which interpenetrated to geopolymer. The load-deflection curves confirmed increase by 50% in the flexural toughness coefficient of the MKG with the incorporation of 0.8 wt % PAAS.

Circulating fluidized bed slag (CFBS) is an industrial waste produced by coal combustion in power plants. To explore the application of CFB slag in cement-stabilized bases, this paper studies the influence of different dosage of CFBS on the mechanics, water stability, and shrinkage of cement-stabilized soil using laboratory experiments. The hydration activity and interface morphology of CFBS in cement-stabilized clay were observed using XRD and SEM. The improvement mechanism of CFBS on the performance of cement-stabilized clay was revealed. The results indicated that, compared with cement-stabilized clay, cement–CFBS-stabilized clay exhibited better mechanical and water stability, and significantly inhibited the shrinkage deformation of cement-stabilized clay. When the addition of CFBS was 70%, cement–CFBS-stabilized clay had the best mechanics and durability. Microscopic tests show that CFBS contains more active silicon aluminum oxide, which is easily dissolved and the hydration of which produces more gel products, so the mixture structure is denser, the strength is improved, and water does not easily evaporate; it has the characteristics of micro expansion which compensates for dry shrinkage deformation.

To address the environmental pressures and resource waste caused by massive stockpiling of steel slag, this study developed a carbonated steel slag pervious concrete binder using 40% steel slag powder as the primary cementitious component combined with CaO and MgO. The mechanical performance evolution was investigated, while XRD, SEM, and TG-DTG microcharacterization techniques were employed to reveal the carbonation mechanism and strength formation principles. The results demonstrate that when CaO and MgO contents reached 5% and 15%, respectively, the 28d compressive strength of mortar increased by 134.49% compared to the reference group. Microstructural analysis confirmed that CaO reacted to form CaCO3 crystals, while MgO enhanced strength by regulating CaCO3 crystal morphology to optimize product structure. Using steel slag as an aggregate, carbonated steel slag pervious concrete was prepared to investigate the influence mechanisms of B/A ratio and W/B ratio on compressive strength, permeability coefficient, and carbonation effects. The post-carbonation strength increase was adopted to evaluate carbonation efficiency. Increasing B/A ratio enhanced paste filling in aggregate voids, raising 28d compressive strength to 24.76 MPa, but thickened paste coating layers reduced permeability coefficient to 0.33 mm/s while impeding CO2 diffusion, decreasing carbonation strength growth rate by 22.76%. Initial W/B ratio elevation improved workability to increase strength to 23.76 MPa, whereas excessive water caused paste sedimentation and strength reduction. As W/B ratio rose, permeability coefficient decreased by 65.6%, while carbonation strength growth rate increased. The carbonated steel slag pervious concrete contained approximately 82% steel slag, demonstrating high resource utilization efficiency of steel slag and significant potential for carbon emission reduction.
