Cracks are among the most common, most likely, and earliest of all pavement distresses. Detecting and repairing cracks as early as possible can help extend the service life of pavements. However, Detecting cracks with precision can be challenging due to their varied structural characteristics and complex background interference. In this paper, a new convolutional neural network architecture, OUR-Net, is designed to more efficiently treat both high-and low-frequency visual image features. An Ocatve Convolution is incorporated into the proposed network as an enhancement to conventional convolution. In particular, an Octave Convolution Residual Block (OCRB) is embedded in the encoder to replace the convolutional layer of the classical encoder. Moerover, we propose Octave Max Unpooling (OMU) as the upsampling operation of the decoder, enabling the neural network to learn how to decode multi-spatial frequency features. Compared with models using traditional convolution, OUR-Net has better capability of processing multi-scale information, thus simultaneously improving model performance while saving computational costs by reducing spatial redundancy. We evaluate the superiority of the proposed method by comparing it to state-of-the-art crack segmentation methods on four public datasets (CrackLS315, CFD, Crack200, DeepCrack), which encompass cracks of various widths. Comprehensive experimental results reveal that the proposed method performs excellently, which achieves F1-score and mIoU of 0.9112, 0.9271, 0.8106, 0.9318, and 0.8369, 0.8644, 0.6815, 0.8723, respectively, on the four datasets. A lightweight version of the proposed network is constructed using depthwise separable convolution that achieves excellent performance with only 0.88M parameters.

Due to the complexity and similarity of plant leaves, it is very important to study an effective leaf-feature extraction method to improve the recognition rate of plant leaves. We study five multi-scale triangle representations: the triangle unsigned area representation (TUA), the triangle vertex angle representation (TVA) and three new representations, which we define as the gray average (TGA), the gray standard deviation (TGSD) and the side length integral (TSLI) on the triangle. In this method the curvature features of the contour, the texture features and the shape area feature are extracted to provide a multiscale leaf-feature description, and a new adaptive KNN for optimization method is proposed to improve the retrieval rate of leaf datasets. Experiments show that compared with the state-of-the-art methods, our method has higher accuracy on the Swedish and Flavia plant leaf datasets, which are respectively 99.35% and 99.43% with 84.76% Mean Average Precision (MAP) value and has comparable results on MPEG-7, kimia99 and kimia216 datasets. When our method is combined with KNN for optimization, the retrieval rate of the above datasets has been significantly improved, especially MAP on the Flavia dataset increases to 94.48%.

Cloud-top heights (CTH), as one of the representative variables reflecting cloud macro-physical properties, affect the Earth–atmosphere system through radiation budget, water cycle, and atmospheric circulation. This study compares the CTH from passive- and active-spaceborne sensors with ground-based Ka-band zenith radar (KAZR) observations at the Semi-Arid Climate and Environment Observatory of Lanzhou University (SACOL) site for the period 2013–2019. A series of fundamental statistics on cloud probability in different limited time and areas at the SACOL site reveals that there is an optimal agreement for both cloud frequency and fraction derived from space and surface observations in a 0.5° × 0.5° box area and a 40-min time window. Based on the result, several facets of cloud fraction (CF), cloud overlapping, seasonal variation, and cloud geometrical depth (CGD) are investigated to evaluate the CTH retrieval accuracy of different observing sensors. Analysis shows that the CTH differences between multi-satellite sensors and KAZR decrease with increasing CF and CGD, significantly for passive satellite sensors in non-overlapping clouds. Regarding passive satellite sensors, e.g., Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua, the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) on Terra, and the Advanced Himawari Imager on Himawari-8 (HW8), a greater CTH frequency difference exists between the upper and lower altitude range, and they retrieve lower CTH than KAZR on average. The CTH accuracy of HW8 and MISR are susceptible to inhomogeneous clouds, which can be reduced by controlling the increase of CF. Besides, the CTH from active satellite sensors, e.g., Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) on CloudSat, and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) onboard Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO), agree well with KAZR and are less affected by seasonal variation and inhomogeneous clouds. Only CALIPSO CTH is higher than KAZR CTH, mainly caused by the low-thin clouds, typically in overlapping clouds.

Wireless (smart) sensor networks (WSNs), networks made up of embedded wireless smart sensors, are an important paradigm with a wide range of applications, including the internet of things (IoT), smart grids, smart production systems, smart buildings and many others. WSNs achieve better execution efficiency if their energy consumption can be better controlled, because their component sensors are either difficult or impossible to recharge, and have a finite battery life. In addition, transmission cost must be minimized, and signal transmission quantity must be maximized to improve WSN performance. Thus, a multi-objective involving energy consumption, cost and signal transmission quantity in WSNs needs to be studied. Energy consumption, cost and signal transmission quantity usually have uncertain characteristics, and can often be represented by fuzzy numbers. Therefore, this work suggests a fuzzy simplified swarm optimization algorithm (fSSO) to resolve the multi-objective optimization problem consisting of energy consumption, cost and signal transmission quantity of the transmission process in WSNs under uncertainty. Finally, an experiment of ten benchmarks from smaller to larger scale WSNs is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed fSSO algorithm.

The detection of colony-forming units (CFUs) is a time-consuming but essential task in mulberry bacterial blight research. To overcome the problem of inaccurate small-target detection and high computational consumption in mulberry bacterial blight colony detection task, a mulberry bacterial blight colony dataset (MBCD) consisting of 310 images and 23,524 colonies is presented. Based on the MBCD, a colony detection model named Colony-YOLO is proposed. Firstly, the lightweight backbone network StarNet is employed, aiming to enhance feature extraction capabilities while reducing computational complexity. Next, C2f-MLCA is designed by embedding MLCA (Mixed Local Channel Attention) into the C2f module of YOLOv8 to integrate local and global feature information, thereby enhancing feature representation capabilities. Furthermore, the Shape-IoU loss function is implemented to prioritize geometric consistency between predicted and ground truth bounding boxes. Experiment results show that the Colony-YOLO achieved an mAP of 96.1% on MBCDs, which is 4.8% higher than the baseline YOLOv8n, with FLOPs and Params reduced by 1.8 G and 0.8 M, respectively. Comprehensive evaluations demonstrate that our method excels in detection accuracy while maintaining lower complexity, making it effective for colony detection in practical applications.
