Background: Taiwan has insufficient nursing resources due to the high turnover rate of health care providers. Therefore, reducing the heavy workload of these employees is essential. Herein, speech transcription, which has various potential clinical applications, was employed for the documentation of nursing records. The requirement of including only one speaker per transcription facilitated data collection and system development. Moreover, authorization from patients was unnecessary. Objective: The aim of this study was to construct a speech recognition system for nursing records such that health care providers can complete nursing records without typing or with only a few edits. Methods: Nursing records in Taiwan are mainly written in Mandarin, with technical terms and abbreviations presented in both Mandarin and English. Therefore, the training set consisted of English code-switching information. Next, transfer learning (TL) and meta-TL (MTL) methods, which perform favorably in code-switching scenarios, were applied. Results: As of September 2021, the China Medical University Hospital Artificial Intelligence Speech (CMaiSpeech) data set was established by manually annotating approximately 100 hours of recordings from 525 speakers. The word error rate (WER) of the benchmark model of syllable-based TL was 29.54% in code-switching. The WER of the proposed model of syllable-based MTL was 22.20% in code-switching. The test set comprised 17,247 words. Moreover, in a clinical case, the proposed model of syllable-based MTL yielded a WER of 31.06% in code-switching. The clinical test set contained 1159 words. Conclusions: This paper has two main contributions. First, the CMaiSpeech data set—a Mandarin-English corpus—has been established. Health care providers in Taiwan are often compelled to use a mixture of Mandarin and English in nursing records. Second, an automatic speech recognition system for nursing record document conversion was proposed. The proposed system can shorten the work handover time and further reduce the workload of health care providers.

Accurate and interpretable staging of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) remains challenging due to the heterogeneous progression of neurodegeneration and the complementary nature of imaging and clinical biomarkers. This study implements and evaluates an optimized Hierarchical Multi-Modal Fusion Framework (HMFF) that systematically integrates 3D structural MRI with clinical assessment scales for robust three-class classification of cognitively normal (CN), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD subjects. A standardized preprocessing pipeline, including N4 bias field correction, nonlinear registration to MNI space, ANTsNet-based skull stripping, voxel normalization, and spatial resampling, was employed to ensure anatomically consistent and high-quality MRI inputs. Within the proposed framework, volumetric imaging features were extracted using a 3D DenseNet-121 architecture, while structured clinical information was modeled via an XGBoost classifier to capture nonlinear clinical priors. These heterogeneous representations were hierarchically fused through a lightweight multilayer perceptron, enabling effective cross-modal interaction. To further enhance discriminative capability and model efficiency, a hierarchical feature selection strategy was incorporated to progressively refine high-dimensional imaging features. Experimental results demonstrated that performance consistently improved with feature refinement and reached an optimal balance at approximately 90 selected features. Under this configuration, the proposed HMFF achieved an accuracy of 0.94 (95% Confidence Interval: [0.918, 0.951]), a recall of 0.91, a precision of 0.94, and an F1-score of 0.92, outperforming unimodal and conventional multimodal baselines under comparable settings. Moreover, Grad-CAM visualization confirmed that the model focused on clinically relevant neuroanatomical regions, including the hippocampus and medial temporal lobe, enhancing interpretability and clinical plausibility. These findings indicate that hierarchical multimodal fusion with interpretable feature refinement offers a promising and extensible solution for reliable and explainable automated AD staging.

Numerous imaging-based methods have been proposed for artifact monitoring and preservation, yet most rely on fixed-angle cameras or robotic platforms, leading to high cost and complexity. In this study, a portable monocular camera pose estimation and calibration framework is presented to capture artifact images from consistent viewpoints over time. The system is implemented on a Raspberry Pi integrated with a controllable three-axis gimbal, enabling untethered operation. Three methodological innovations are proposed. First, ORB feature extraction combined with a quadtree-based distribution strategy is employed to ensure uniform keypoint coverage and robustness under varying illumination conditions. Second, on-device processing is achieved using a Raspberry Pi, eliminating dependence on external power or high-performance hardware. Third, unlike traditional fixed setups or multi-degree-of-freedom robotic arms, real-time, low-cost calibration is provided, maintaining pose alignment accuracy consistently within three pixels. Through these innovations, a technically robust, computationally efficient, and highly portable solution for artifact preservation has been demonstrated, making it suitable for deployment in museums, exhibition halls, and other resource-constrained environments.

This paper presents the design of a circularly polarized RFID ground mat antenna for UHF-band sports-event applications. Considering a practical sports-event timing system, the ground-based mat antenna with characteristics of a low-backward radiation and circular polarization is proposed. A multilayer square patch antenna using an acrylic dielectric substrate with a wideband branch-line coupler feeding network is employed to improve overall radiation efficiency, which, in turn, provides two excitation port with a phase difference of 90°. Thus, right-hand circular polarization can be obtained. Instead of a conventional FR4–air–FR4 structure, the proposed FR4–acrylic–FR4 composite configuration is adopted to substantially increase the antenna’s mechanical strength and durability against external pressure from runners. The antenna’s performance is attributed to the use of an effective composite dielectric constant and an optimized design of its parameters. Additionally, the patch antenna’s low-backward radiation characteristic helps reduce multipath interference in real-world applications. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulated data, validating the proposed antenna design. In order to further assess the practical performance of the antenna, outdoor measurements are carried out to validate the estimated reading distances derived from controlled anechoic chamber tests. The measured return loss remained below −10 dB across the frequency range of 755–990 MHz, exhibiting a slight discrepancy compared to the simulated bandwidth of 800–1030 MHz. For the characteristic of the circular polarization, the measured axial ratio is below 3 dB within the range of 860–920 MHz. While a more relaxed criterion of an axial ratio below 6 dB is considered, the operating frequency range extends from 560 MHz to 985 MHz, which falls within the frequency band relevant for RFID reader applications.
