We introduce effective uses of Gerschgorin radii of the unitary transformed covariance matrix for source number estimation. There are two approaches, likelihood and heuristic, used for developing the detection criteria. The likelihood approach combines the Gerschgorin radii to the well-known source number detectors and improves their detection performances for Gaussian and white noise processes. It is verified that the Gerschgorin likelihood estimators (GLE) are consistent. The Gerschgorin AIC yields a consistent estimate and the Gerschgorin MDL criterion does not tend to underestimate for small or moderate data samples. The heuristic approach applying the Gerschgorin disk estimator (GDE) developed from the projection concept, overcomes the problem in cases of small data samples, an unknown noise model, and data dependency. Furthermore, the detection performances of both approaches through the suggested rotations and averaging can be further improved. Finally, the proposed and existing criteria are evaluated in various conditions by using simulated and measured experimental data.<>

The reference and error channels of active noise control (ANC) systems may be saturated in real-world applications if the noise level exceeds the dynamic range of the electronic devices. This nonlinear saturation degrades the performance of ANC systems that use linear adaptive filters with the filtered-X least-mean-square (FXLMS) algorithm. This paper derives a bilinear FXLMS algorithm for nonlinear adaptive filters to solve the problems of signal saturation and other nonlinear distortions that occur in ANC systems used for practical applications. The performance of this bilinear adaptive filter is evaluated in terms of convergence speed, residual noise in steady state, and the computational complexity for different filter lengths. Computer simulations verify that the nonlinear adaptive filter with the associated bilinear FXLMS algorithm is more effective in reducing saturation effects in ANC systems than a linear filter and a nonlinear Volterra filter with the FXLMS algorithm.

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is correlated with cardiovascular risk. This study presents a new method for measuring the arterial PWV by simultaneously recording the digital volume pulse through the finger and the toe by way of dual-channel photoplethysmography (PPG). In this study, 100 asymptomatic subjects (54 men and 46 women, 19 to 64 years of age) were enrolled. The PWV was measured both by dual-channel PPG (PWV-DVP) and by the standard method that current used applanation tonometry (PWV-AT). The developed dual-channel PPG system recorded digital volume pulse simultaneously from both the finger and toe. Time of pulse transition was measured on the time delay difference between two digital volume pulses. The PWV was calculated by dividing the distance between finger and toe by that of transit time. The PWV-DVP was significantly correlated with PWV-AT (r = 0.678, P < .01). With multivariate analysis controlled for age, heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure, PWV-DVP was still significantly correlated with PWV-AT (r = 0.669, P < .01). Subjects with hypertension and dyslipidemia had significant higher PWV detected by both methods. This study showed that PWV measured with dual-channel PPG system correlated very well with that measured using the traditional method.

Although current technique of photoplethysmography (PPG) is a popular noninvasive method of waveform contour analysis in assessing arterial stiffness, data obtained are frequently affected by various environmental and physiological factors. We proposed an easily operable air pressure sensing system (APSS) for radial arterial signal capturing. Totally, 108 subjects (young, the aged with or without diabetes) were recruited from July 2009 to May 2010. Arterial waveform signals from the wrist were obtained and analyzed using Hilbert-Huang transformation (HHT). Through ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), the signals were decomposed into eight intrinsic mode functions (IMF1-8) of which IMF5 was found to be the desired signal with a discernible diastolic peak. The results showed significant differences in reflection index (RI) and stiffness index (SI) from the young subjects and those from the aged participants with or without diabetes. Significant differences in RI and SI were also noted between subjects with well-controlled diabetes and those without. Good reproducibility and correlation were demonstrated. In conclusion, the present study proposed the application of radial arterial signal capturing subsystem and HHT in acquiring more reliable data on RI and SI compared with the conventional PPG method.

This study proposed a dynamic pulse wave velocity (PWV)-based biomedical parameter in assessing the degree of atherosclerosis for the aged and diabetic populations. Totally, 91 subjects were recruited from a single medical institution between July 2009 and October 2010. The subjects were divided into four groups: young healthy adults (Group 1, n = 22), healthy upper middle-aged adults (Group 2, n = 28), type 2 diabetics with satisfactory blood sugar control (Group 3, n = 21), and unsatisfactory blood sugar control (Group 4, n = 20). A self-developed six-channel electrocardiography (ECG)-PWV-based equipment was used to acquire 1000 successive recordings of PWVfoot values within 30 min. The data, thus, obtained were analyzed with multiscale entropy (MSE). Large-scale MSE index (MEILS) was chosen as the assessment parameter. Not only did MEILS successfully differentiate between subjects in Groups 1 and 2, but it also showed a significant difference between Groups 3 and 4. Compared with the conventional parameter of PWVfoot and MEI on R-R interval [i.e., MEI (RRI)] in evaluating the degree of atherosclerotic change, the dynamic parameter, MEILS (PWV), could better reflect the impact of age and blood sugar control on the progression of atherosclerosis.
