With a rapid increase in population, many problems arise in relation to waste dumps. These emits hazardous gases, which have negative effects on human health. The main issue is the domestic solid waste collection, management, and classification. According to studies, in America, nearly 75% of waste can be recycled, but there is a lack of a proper real-time waste-segregating mechanism, due to which only 30% of waste is being recycled at present. To maintain a clean and green environment, we need a smart waste management and classification system. To tackle the above-highlighted issue, we propose a real-time smart waste management and classification mechanism using a cutting-edge approach (SWMACM-CA). It uses the Internet of Things (IoT), deep learning (DL), and cutting-edge techniques to classify and segregate waste items in a dump area. Moreover, we propose a waste grid segmentation mechanism, which maps the pile at the waste yard into grid-like segments. A camera captures the waste yard image and sends it to an edge node to create a waste grid. The grid cell image segments act as a test image for trained deep learning, which can make a particular waste item prediction. The deep-learning algorithm used for this specific project is Visual Geometry Group with 16 layers (VGG16). The model is trained on a cloud server deployed at the edge node to minimize overall latency. By adopting hybrid and decentralized computing models, we can reduce the delay factor and efficiently use computational resources. The overall accuracy of the trained algorithm is over 90%, which is quite effective. Therefore, our proposed (SWMACM-CA) system provides more accurate results than existing state-of-the-art solutions, which is the core objective of this work.

Efficient and reliable systems are required to detect and monitor disasters such as wildfires as well as to notify the people in the disaster-affected areas. Internet of Things (IoT) is the key paradigm that can address the multitude problems related to disaster management. In addition, an unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-enabled IoT platform connected via cellular network can further enhance the robustness of the disaster management system. The UAV-enabled IoT platform is based on three main research areas: (i) ground IoT network; (ii) communication technologies for ground and aerial connectivity; and (iii) data analytics. In this paper, we provide a holistic view of a UAVs-enabled IoT platform which can provide ubiquitous connectivity to both aerial and ground users in challenging environments such as wildfire management. We then highlight key challenges for the design of an efficient and reliable IoT platform. We detail a case study targeting the design of an efficient ground IoT network that can detect and monitor fire and send notifications to people using named data networking (NDN) architecture. The use of NDN architecture in a sensor network for IoT integrates pull-based communication to enable reliable and efficient message dissemination in the network and to notify the users as soon as possible in case of disastrous situations. The results of the case study show the enormous impact on the performance of IoT platform for wildfire management. Lastly, we draw the conclusion and outline future research directions in this field.

Fitness and sport have drawn significant attention in wearable and persuasive computing. Physical activities are worthwhile for health, well-being, improved fitness levels, lower mental pressure and tension levels. Nonetheless, during high-power and commanding workouts, there is a high likelihood that physical fitness is seriously influenced. Jarring motions and improper posture during workouts can lead to temporary or permanent disability. With the advent of technological advances, activity acknowledgment dependent on wearable sensors has pulled in countless studies. Still, a fully portable smart fitness suite is not industrialized, which is the central need of today’s time, especially in the Covid-19 pandemic. Considering the effectiveness of this issue, we proposed a fully portable smart fitness suite for the household to carry on their routine exercises without any physical gym trainer and gym environment. The proposed system considers two exercises, i.e., T-bar and bicep curl with the assistance of the virtual real-time android application, acting as a gym trainer overall. The proposed fitness suite is embedded with a gyroscope and EMG sensory modules for performing the above two exercises. It provided alerts on unhealthy, wrong posture movements over an android app and is guided to the best possible posture based on sensor values. The KNN classification model is used for prediction and guidance for the user while performing a particular exercise with the help of an android application-based virtual gym trainer through a text-to-speech module. The proposed system attained 89% accuracy, which is quite effective with portability and a virtually assisted gym trainer feature.

Disasters are the uncertain calamities which within no time can change the situation quite drastically. They not only affect the system’s infrastructure but can also put an adverse effect on human life. A large chunk of the IP-based Internet of Things (IoT) schemes tackle disasters such as fire, earthquake, and flood. Moreover, recently proposed Named Data Networking (NDN) architecture exhibited promising results for IoT as compare to IP-based approaches. Therefore to tackle disaster management system (DMS), it is needed to explore it through NDN architecture and this is the main motivation behind this work. In this research, a NDN based IoT-DMS (fire disaster) architecture is proposed, named as NDN-DISCA. In NDN-DISCA, NDN producer pushes emergency content towards nearby consumers. To provide push support, Beacon Alert Message (BAM) is created using fixed sequence number. NDN-DISCA is simulated in ndnSIM considering the disaster scenario of IoT-based smart campus (SC). From results, it is found that NDN-DISCA exhibits minimal delay and improved throughput when compared to the legacy NDN and existing PUSH schemes.

The thriving adoption of drones for delivering parcels, packages, medicines, etc., is surging with time. The application of drones for delivery services results in faster delivery, fuel-saving, and less energy consumption. Giant companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc., are actively working on developing, testing, and improving drone-based delivery systems. So far, a lot of work has been done for improving the design, speed, operating range, security of the delivery drones, etc. However, very limited work has been done to ensure a complete and reliable last-mile delivery from the merchant’s store to the hands of the actual customer. To ensure a complete and reliable last-mile delivery, a drone must authenticate the consumer before dropping the package. Therefore, in this work, we propose a consumer authentication (Consumer-Auth) hybrid computing framework for drone delivery as a service to make sure that the parcel is perfectly delivered to the intended customer. The proposed Consumer-Auth framework enables a drone to reach the exact destination by using the GPS coordinates of the customer autonomously. After reaching the exact location, the drone waits for the customer to come to the specific pinned location then it starts a two-factor consumer authentication process, i.e., one-time password (OTP) verification and face Recognition. The experimental results manifest the effectiveness of the proposed Consumer-Auth framework to ensure a complete and reliable drone-based last-mile delivery.

This article focuses on the application of conditional variational autoencoders as anomaly detectors to identify emerging threats in computer networks. Autoencoders are machine learning techniques that are used to find lower-dimensional representations, i.e. an encoding in latent space, from input space. With variational Autoencoders (VAE) this representation is not a single code word or vector but a probability distribution – greatly improving the robustness of the coding scheme. In contrast to VAE, we present a conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE), which uses the latent representation to encode regular and malicious network traffic into a bimodal distribution. While regular autoencoders are unsupervised, we require some labeled data to tune the bimodal representations, thus turning the learning problem into a semi-supervised classification task. However, unknown threats (i.e. those not contained in labeled training data) can be detected as well. In our presented case study, based on available computer network datasets (KDD99 and CIC-IDS2017), we could improve the detection of unknown threats compared to conventional approaches. Our experiments are publicly available.
