The advent of the World Wide Web and the rapid adoption of social media platforms (such as Facebook and Twitter) paved the way for information dissemination that has never been witnessed in the human history before. With the current usage of social media platforms, consumers are creating and sharing more information than ever before, some of which are misleading with no relevance to reality. Automated classification of a text article as misinformation or disinformation is a challenging task. Even an expert in a particular domain has to explore multiple aspects before giving a verdict on the truthfulness of an article. In this work, we propose to use machine learning ensemble approach for automated classification of news articles. Our study explores different textual properties that can be used to distinguish fake contents from real. By using those properties, we train a combination of different machine learning algorithms using various ensemble methods and evaluate their performance on 4 real world datasets. Experimental evaluation confirms the superior performance of our proposed ensemble learner approach in comparison to individual learners.

Real world complex networks are indirect representation of complex systems. They grow over time. These networks are fragmented and raucous in practice. An important concern about complex network is link prediction. Link prediction aims to determine the possibility of probable edges. The link prediction demand is often spotted in social networks for recommending new friends, and, in recommender systems for recommending new items (movies, gadgets etc) based on earlier shopping history. In this work, we propose a new link prediction algorithm namely “Common Neighbor and Centrality based Parameterized Algorithm” (CCPA) to suggest the formation of new links in complex networks. Using AUC (Area Under the receiver operating characteristic Curve) as evaluation criterion, we perform an extensive experimental evaluation of our proposed algorithm on eight real world data sets, and against eight benchmark algorithms. The results validate the improved performance of our proposed algorithm.

Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) is an emerging technology for exploration of underwater resources. Security plays an important role in the UWSNs environment because the environment of UWSNs is prone to different security attacks. This research proposes SEECR: Secure Energy Efficient and Cooperative Routing protocol for UWSNs. SEECR comprised of energy efficient and strong defense mechanism for combatting attacks in underwater environment. SEECR exploits cooperative routing for enhancing the performance of network. Considering the resource constrained UWSNs environment minimum computation is employed for implementing security so that SEECR remains suitable for underwater environment. In order to evaluate the performance of SEECR, this research compares the performance of SEECR with AMCTD: Adaptive Mobility of Courier Nodes in Threshold-optimized DBR - a well-known routing protocol for UWSNs environment. The performance of SEECR and AMCTD protocols are evaluated using different performance evaluation parameters such as number of alive nodes, transmission loss, throughput, energy tax and end-to-end delay. The results suggest an improved performance of SEECR over AMCTD. SEECR shows an improvement of 9% in terms of number of alive nodes, over 50% reduction in terms of transmission loss, up to 9% increase in throughput, up to 23% reduction in energy tax, and 25% reduction in end-to-end delay. Further, we observe that attack significantly degrades the performance of AMCTD whereas due to the embedded defense mechanism in SEECR the impact of attack is negligible.

Background: Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders globally, affecting approximately 280 million people and frequently going undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. The growing ubiquity of wearable devices enables continuous monitoring of activity levels, providing a new avenue for data-driven detection and severity assessment of depression. However, existing machine learning models often exhibit lower performance when distinguishing overlapping subtypes of depression and frequently lack explainability, an essential component for clinical acceptance. Objective: This study aimed to develop and evaluate an interpretable machine learning framework for detecting depression and classifying its severity using wearable-actigraphy data, while addressing common challenges such as imbalanced datasets and limited model transparency. Methods: We used the Depresjon dataset and applied Adaptive Synthetic Sampling (ADASYN) to mitigate class imbalance. We extracted multiple statistical features (eg, power spectral density mean and autocorrelation) and demographic attributes (eg, age) from the raw activity data. Five machine learning algorithms (logistic regression, support vector machines, random forest, XGBoost, and neural networks) were assessed via accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, specificity, and Matthew correlation constant. We further used Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) and Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations (LIME) to elucidate prediction drivers. Results: XGBoost achieved the highest overall accuracy of 84.94% for binary classification and 85.91% for multiclass severity. SHAP and LIME revealed power spectral density mean, age, and autocorrelation as top predictors, highlighting circadian disruptions’ role in depression. Conclusions: Our interpretable framework reliably identifies depressed versus nondepressed individuals and differentiates mild from moderate depression. The inclusion of SHAP and LIME provides transparent, clinically meaningful insights, emphasizing the potential of explainable artificial intelligence to enhance early detection and intervention strategies in mental health care.

Deep learning-based models have revolutionized medical diagnostics by using Big Data to enhance disease diagnosis and clinical decision-making. However, their significant computational demands and opaque decision making processes, often characterized as “black-box” systems, pose major challenges in time-critical and resource constrained healthcare settings. To address these issues, this study explores the application of randomized machine learning models, specifically Extreme Learning Machines (ELMs) and Random Vector Functional Link (RVFL) networks, in medical diagnostics. These models introduce stochasticity into their training processes, reducing computational complexity and training times while maintaining accuracy. Furthermore, we integrate Explainable AI techniques namely Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations (LIME) and Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) to explain the decision-making rationale of ELMs and RVFL. Performance evaluations on genitourinary cancers and coronary artery disease datasets demonstrate that RVFL outperforms traditional deep learning models, achieving superioraccuracyof88.29%withacomputationaloverhead of 6.22 seconds for genitourinary cancers, and an accuracy of 81.64% with a computational time of 0.0308 seconds for coronary artery disease. This research highlights the potential of randomized models in enhancing efficiency and transparency in medical diagnosis, thereby accelerating better treatment outcomes and advocating for more accessible and interpretable AI solutions in healthcare.

Blockchain technology is one of the key technological breakthroughs of the last decade. It has the ability to revolutionize numerous aspects of society, including financial systems, healthcare, e-government and many others. One such area that is able to reap the benefits of blockchain technology is the real estate industry. Like many other industries, real estate faces major administrative problems such as high transaction fees, a lack of transparency, fraud and the effects of a middleman including undue influence and commissions. Blockchain enables supporting technologies to overcome the obstacles inherent within the real estate investment market. These technologies include smart contracts, immutable record management and time-stamped storage. We utilize these key properties of blockchain technology in our work by proposing a system that has the ability to record real estate transactions in a private blockchain, using smart contracts. The immutability of the blockchain ledger and transactions can provide a safe space for the real estate business. Blockchain technology can also assist the authentication process by hastening background checks. Personal digital keys are provided to parties that are involved in a contract, thus minimizing the risk of fraud. We also discuss the rationale behind the advantages of using a blockchain in this manner, and how we selected the consensus mechanism for our proposed system.
