In sixth-generation (6G) communication networks, ultrahigh-data rate and reliability are greatly vital for massive user connections and network sensors, such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has been evolved as an efficient strategy to enhance the reliability of wireless communication systems through prolonging the battery lifetime by harvesting energy from the received radio-frequency (RF) signals. Furthermore, cooperative relay sensors in IoT networks can extend the network coverage. In this article, we consider a massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) two-way relaying system, where the relay node splits the received RF signals into two power streams, one for information decoding (ID) and the other for energy harvesting (EH). Two classical and linear relay precodings, i.e., zero-forcing reception/zero-forcing transmission (ZFR/ZFT) and maximum-ratio combining/maximum-ratio transmission (MRC/MRT), are adopted to satisfy the requirements of high rate in this relay system. Different from prior work, the SWIPT technique and large-scale fading effects of MIMO channels are taken into account for deriving the asymptotic sum-rates of four prevalent power scaling cases when the number of relay antennas grows to infinity. Finally, the analytical results are evaluated by the presented simulation and numerical results.

This letter presents an optimal phase shift configuration method for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) with discrete phase shifts to maximize the passive beamforming gain. Specifically, based on theoretical analysis, the multi-ary phase shift optimization problem is first transformed into an equivalent binary phase shift problem. Although it is still a non-convex optimization problem, the optimal solution can be found indirectly through the linear search (LS) for the optimal phase of the superimposed channel. Accordingly, the LS algorithm is designed, in which iterative operations are adopted to ensure the linear computational complexity. The simulation results verify that the proposed LS algorithm achieves the globally optimal passive beamforming, which outperforms existing excellent algorithms. Furthermore, it is also revealed that a 3-bit quantized phase shifter can obtain sufficiently good performance relative to the ideal continuous phase shifter.

We analyze a secure unmanned aerial vehicle-assisted two-hop mixed radio frequency (RF) and underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system using a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. The UWOC channel was modeled using a mixture exponential-generalized Gamma distribution to consider the combined effects of air bubbles and temperature gradients on transmission characteristics. Both legitimate and eavesdropping RF channels were modeled using flexible α-μ distributions. Specifically, we first derived both the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the received signal-to-noise ratio of the system. Based on the PDF and CDF expressions, we derived the closed-form expressions for the tight lower bound of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNZ), which are both expressed in terms bivariate Fox’s H-function. To utilize these analytical expressions, we derived asymptotic expressions of SOP and PNZ using only well-known functions. We also used asymptotic expressions to determine the suboptimal transmitting power to maximize energy efficiency. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of levels of air bubbles and temperature gradients in the UWOC channel, and studied the nonlinear characteristics of the transmission medium and the number of multipath clusters of the RF channel on the secrecy performance. Finally, all analyses were validated using a simulation.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is emerging as a promising technology to achieve coverage enhancement. This paper develops a tractable analytical framework based on stochastic geometry for performance analysis of RIS-assisted millimeter wave networks. Based on the framework, a two-step cell association criterion is proposed, and the analytical expressions of the user association probability and the coverage probability in general scenarios are derived. In addition, the closed-form expressions of the two performance metrics in special cases are also provided. The simulation results verify the accuracy of the theoretically derived analytical expressions, and reveal the superiority of deploying RISs in millimeter wave networks and the effectiveness of the proposed cell association scheme to improve coverage. Furthermore, the effects of the RIS parameters and the BS density on coverage performance are also investigated.

Combination of wireless power transfer and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is considered as an effective solution to achieving sustainable, flexible and energy-efficient communications. In this paper, we study a UAV-enabled multiuser relaying system with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, where the users are capable of power splitting. Our aim is to jointly optimize the beamforming matrixes of the base station and UAV relay and the power splitting factors of users to maximize the sum harvested energy of users while satisfying the quality of service and the transmit power constraints. We propose an alternating optimization scheme to tackle the intractable no-convex problem. To reduce the computational cost, the low-complexity scheme based on singular value decomposition-zero forcing (SVD-ZF) technique is designed. Moreover, we discuss the convergence and computational complexity of the two proposed schemes. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

In this paper, we investigate the resource allocation scheme for an unmanned-aerial-vehicle-enable (UAV-enabled) two-way relaying system with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), where two user equipment exchange information with the help of UAV relay and harvest energy through power splitting (PS) scheme. Under the transmission power constraints at UEs and UAV relay, a non-convex intractable optimization problem is formulated which maximizes the sum retained energy of two UEs while satisfying the minimum signal-to-noise ratio requirement. We decouple the complicated beamforming and PS factor optimization problem into three solvable subproblems and propose an efficient alternating optimization scheme. Subsequently, in order to reduce the complexity, a robust scheme based on generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) is designed. Finally, numerical results verify the robustness and effectiveness of the two proposed schemes.
