This article demonstrates the potential of Defense Meteorological Satellite Program-Operational Linescan System stable nighttime light imagery for county-level earthquake resilience analysis. In this article, we firstly intercalibrated the nighttime light data and calculated the total sum of stable lights for each of the 261 counties affected by the Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake from 1992 to 2013; secondly established an earthquake resilience model based on a nighttime light index to analyze the static and dynamic resilience of different counties; and lastly discussed the possible influencing factors from geographic, disaster-related, political and socioeconomic perspectives. The results first show that the static resilience of the extremely hard-hit counties in the Wenchuan earthquake-affected area increased from south to north along the long axis of the intensity zone, and plain and hilly counties exhibited faster short-term economic recovery than plateau and mountainous counties. Moreover, all extremely hard-hit counties except Wenchuan, Dujiangyan and Pingwu recovered to the normal level before 2011, whereas 52% of the counties in the generally affected areas recovered within three years. Through linear regression analysis, we also found that the different earthquake resilience capabilities across counties are most likely related to the soil liquefaction risk, average elevation, land-use degree, and socioeconomic factors, such as the industrial structure, the population age distribution, and social welfare.
In this paper, an automatic aftershock forecasting system for China is presented. Based on a parameter-free historical analogy method, this system can produce short-term aftershock forecast, including seismic sequence types and the magnitude of the largest aftershock, within a few minutes after a major earthquake and can further provide scientists and government agencies with a set of background information for consultation purposes. First, the system construction concept and operation framework are described, and an evaluation of the forecast performance of the system is then conducted considering earthquakes from 2019 to 2021 in mainland China. The results indicate that the sequence type classification precision reaches 83.5%, and the magnitude of more than 90% of the aftershocks is smaller than that of upper range forecast. This system is fast and easy to control, and all the reports and maps can be produced approximately 5 min after earthquake occurrence. Practical use verifies that the application of this system has greatly improved the efficiency of post-earthquake consultation in mainland China.
As one of the most sensitive indicators of global climate change, seasonal ice-covered lakes are attracting gaining attention worldwide. As a large seasonal ice-covered lake located in Northern Mongolia, Lake Khovsgol not only provides important freshwater resources for the local population but also serves as a means of water transportation in summer and an important land-based activity for residents in winter. In this study, we used the sub-pixel offset technique with multi-temporal Sentinel-2 optical images to estimate the time-series displacement of lake ice in Lake Khovsgol from 7 December 2020 to 17 June 2021. With the processing of 112 Sentinel-2 images, we obtained 27 pairs of displacement results at intervals of 5, 10, and 15 days. These lake ice movement results covered three stages from ice-on to ice-off. The first stage was the lake ice growth period, which lasted 26 days from 7 December 2020 to 3 January 2021. Ice formation started from the south and extended northward, with a displacement of up to 10 m in 5 days. The second stage was the active phase of the ice cover, which took place from 3 January 2021 to 18 April 2021. Maximum displacement values reached 12 m in the east and 11 m in the north among all observations. The value of the lake ice movement in the north–south direction (NS) was found to be larger than in the east–west direction (EW). The third stage was the melting period, which closed on 17 June 2021. In comparison to the freezing date of November in past years, our results demonstrate the ice-on date of Lake Khovsgol has been delayed to December, suggesting a possible reason that the seasonal ice-covered lake located at the middle latitude has been affected by global warming. In addition, the lake ice movement of our results can reveal the regional climate characteristic. This study is one of the few cases to reveal the distribution characteristics and changing trends of lake ice on the Mongolia Plateau, providing a rare reference for lake ice research in this region.
The fundamental attribute that is essential for the seismic capacity assessment of houses is the building structure type. Conventionally, remote sensing assessment of the seismic capacity for houses has been based on the image features of individual houses, instead of the spatial similarity between them. To enhance the classification accuracy of house structure types, this work proposes a minimum spanning tree (MST) house clustering structure type classification method based on the spatial similarity of houses. First, the method employs the geometric characteristics of residential buildings to calculate the Gestalt factor that characterizes the visual distance. Subsequently, a Delaunay triangular mesh is constructed to create a proximity map between the houses, with the MST generated using visual distance as the weighting factor. Then, the spatial proximity similarity of house clusters is obtained through pruning. Finally, a support vector machine is employed to categorize the architectural structure of the housing complex, viz., simple houses, brick–concrete houses, and frame houses. This classification is based on the geometric, textural, height, and spatial distribution characteristics of the houses. We have conducted a remote sensing classification experiment of house structure types with Zhushan County, Hubei Province as the study area. The results show that the MST clustering method improves the classification accuracy of brick–concrete houses to 95.4% and the classification accuracy of simple houses to 93.4%. Compared to the single-family-based classification method of building structure types, the classification accuracy of frame-structure buildings is improved to 87%. The Kappa coefficient increased to 0.89. This study significantly improves the classification accuracy of building structure types by introducing spatial similarity. Furthermore, it shows the potential for spatial similarity in classifying building structure types.
Several commercial seismometers now support CSTP, the real-time communication protocol used in the China Earthquake Early Warning System, but there is still no simple, flexible, and low-cost solution to archive CSTP streams or integrate them into existing data processing systems. In this study, we design and implement SharpCEEWPServer, a lightweight, out-of-the-box graphical server that integrates client management, real-time data reception, visualization, and archiving, and can, via RingServer, convert CSTP real-time streams into widely supported SeedLink streams. Hardware compatibility is evaluated using four commercial CSTP-capable instruments, a forwarding chain is built to assess forwarding functionality and reliability, and concurrency performance is tested using simulated networks with different station counts. The stability under network impairment scenarios and the performance of the forwarding system were also analyzed. The results show that the server can reliably receive and forward real-time data streams, and that laptop-class hardware is sufficient to withstand the load imposed by an M7.0 earthquake scenario when receiving real-time streams from 1000 three-component seismometers. However, the current version’s latency performance can only meet the needs of non-early warning networks. Overall, the proposed server significantly lowers the deployment and usage threshold for new CSTP-capable instruments and provides an efficient, low-cost integration solution for temporary networks in earthquake emergency response and seismic arrays.
