Natural ester, as a new environmentally green insulating oil, has been widely used in transformer. In an oil-immersed transformer, the normal aging, thermal failure, and discharge failure could easily lead to the decomposition of the oil-paper insulation system and produce different kinds of gases. Studying gas dissolution in natural ester and mineral oil could provide assistance in applying criteria to make a diagnosis of different kinds of faults in the transformer. In this paper, the molecular dynamics method was used to investigate the diffusion behavior of seven fault characteristic gases (including H2, CO, CH4, C2H2, CO2, C2H4, C2H6) in natural ester and mineral oil. The simulation parameters of free volume, interaction energy, mean square displacement, and diffusion coefficient were compared between the natural ester and mineral oil. Meanwhile, the influence of temperature on the diffusion of gas molecules in two kinds of oils was also analyzed. Results showed that the free volume, the interaction energy, and the relative molecular mass of gas molecules were the factors influenced by the diffusion of gas molecules in natural ester and mineral oil. The order of the diffusion coefficients of gas molecules in natural ester was as follows: H2 > CH4 > CO > C2H2 > C2H4 > CO2 > C2H6 and that in mineral oil was as follows: H2 > CH4 > CO> C2H2 > C2 H4 > C2H6 > CO2. By comparing the diffusion behavior of gas molecules in natural ester and mineral oil, it was found that the smaller free volume and higher interaction energy of gas molecules in natural ester were the major reasons for the gas molecules to be more difficult to diffuse in natural ester. The rising temperature could enhance the free volume and reduce the interaction energy between gas molecules and oil. The diffusion coefficient of gas molecules increased exponentially with the follow of temperature. However, the temperature didn’t affect the ordering of diffusion coefficient, free volume, and interaction energy of gas molecules in natural ester and mineral oil.

Organic acid is an important factor that accelerates the aging of cellulosic insulation materials. In this study, the interactions between cellulose and five acids, representative of what may be found in an aging transformer, were studied using molecular dynamics. The adsorption process of the five acids onto the surface of crystalline cellulose shows that the three low molecular acids are more readily adsorbed onto cellulose than the two high molecular acids. The deformation and adsorption energies of the acids all increase with an increase in molecular weight when they are stably interacting with cellulose. However, the differences between adsorption energies and deformation energies are positive for the three low molecular acids, whereas they are negative for the two high molecular acids. This indicates that the attachments onto cellulose of low molecular acids are considerably more stabilized than those of the high molecular acids. This is consistent with the experimental results. Furthermore, based on the calculated solubility parameters of acids, the experimental result that the three low molecular acids are to a large degree absorbed onto the cellulose, whereas the two high molecular acids remain in the oil, was theoretically elucidated using the theory of similarity and intermiscibility.

A novel partial discharge (PD) source localization method was proposed based on the traditional time difference in arrival (TDOA) method. Specifically, the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation phenomenon of the ultra-high-frequency (UHF) signal was considered, and the NLOS propagation error was approximately replaced by a constant, thereby limiting the effect of NLOS propagation. Moreover, the strategy of utilizing more than four sensors was adopted to reduce the possible effect of overcorrection on NLOS propagation. In this paper, the derivation and implementation process of the proposed method is introduced from the perspectives of mathematical model and geometrical model, and its localization results were compared with the traditional TDOA method through an experimental study. The results showed that the speed of error increase of the traditional method presented faster, and the increment of sensor number helped to improve the localization accuracy, but the reduction in localization error becomes insignificant when the sensors exceed six. Finally, the experimental verifications were conducted based on a 35 kV testing transformer with six sensor installations. The experiments found that the proposed localization method had a better calculated accuracy and stability; the obtained minimum calculated error was 10.88 cm, the calculated accuracy can be improved by 82.04% and 78.94%, respectively, with six sensors than four and five sensors arrangement.
