Li Xu is a professor of germplasm conservation of tropical crops, gaining a PhD in Crop Science from Shandong Agricultural University, 2003. Since 1999, he has been engaged in the conservation, innovation, and utilization of tropical plant germplasm resources in vitro; the development of a rapid propagation technology system of plants from 42 families, 64 genera and more than 270 species in vitro; and the establishment of an ultra-low temperature preservation technology system for Nanhaia speciosa and Asplenium nidus. In addition, Li Xu has been involved in the construction of efficient regeneration and genetic transformation systems of banana, pineapple, anthurium, and sisal. More tropical crop germplasm resources can now be safely protected by the in vitro method. Li Xu makes use of the protected resources to develop new quality creations. Li Xu has won three first prizes of Science and Technology Progress in Hainan Province.
