Due to increased use of treated seeds, studies are necessary in relation to the effects of the treatments and their possible consequences on seed quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate phytotoxicity according to when phytosanitary products are applied on soybean seeds and their effect on seed physiological quality and field performance. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a 9 × 2 factorial arrangement involving 9 seed treatments (fungicides and insecticides) and two application times (60 days before sowing and at the time of sowing in the field). Moisture content was determined and tests were performed to ascertain physiological quality (germination and germination under water restriction). Root and hypocotyl length, seedling length, and vigor and uniformity indices were evaluated with the assistance of Vigor-S®. In the field, the following determinations were made: plant height at 30 and 60 days after emergence, first pod height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, and yield. Early seed treatment in the soybean crop can affect initial development of the plants, but it does not affect yield. The phytotoxicity caused by the soybean seed treatment was observed in the root length characteristic.

Seed quality is extremely important for agribusiness, as it can affect the stand establishment, as well as the competitive ability of the plant, affecting its yield potential. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the initial development and the production performance of the maize crop as a function of the vigor of the seed lots. The experiment consisted of 10 treatments, involving two factors: two stands (ideal number of plants and ideal number of seeds corrected by the seedling emergence test in bed); and five seed lots as a function of vigor (63, 68, 83, 87 and 99% vigor), according to the results of the cold test. The experimental design was a randomized block design, with four replications. The following parameters were determined along the crop cycle: plant height; chlorophyll and plant cover index; cycle; initial and final populations; and components of grain yield. The use of high-vigor maize seeds favors the initial development of the crop and soil cover, with a positive influence on the number of grains per ear and final population of plants in pre-harvest, in addition to reducing the cycle. High-vigor maize seeds promote gains in yield; for each increase of 1.0 percentage point in the level of seed vigor of the lot, estimated by cold test, the increase in grain production can reach 43.5 kg.ha-1.

The use of an appropriate method that accurately expresses physiological seed quality and minimizes possible phytotoxicity by chemical products in laboratory testing with soybean seeds is relevant. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence and infer the method adequacy for the representative evaluation of physiological quality of soybean seeds treated with phytosanitary products. Two experiments were carried out in a completely randomized design, with trial 1 in a 9×5 factorial scheme involving nine seed treatments, including fungicides and insecticides, and solutions with five osmotic potentials (0, -0.25, -0.5, -0.75 and -1.0 MPa) for wetting a paper substrate in a germination experiment, with evaluation of the normal seedlings at five and eight days after sowing. The second experiment consisted of a 9×7 factorial, with nine seed treatments and seven methods for germination evaluation at 5 days (between paper - BP, between sand - BS, between paper with water restriction - BPWR, between paper with preconditioning - BPC, sand between paper - SBP and vermiculite between paper - VBP). Treatments with insecticides affect seedling germination and evaluation, with greater phytotoxicity in relation to fungicides. Methods with readily available water led to greater phytotoxicity than methods with low water availability. For soybean germination evaluation of seeds treated with phytosanitary products, the BPC, SBP and VBP methods were optimal.

The size of soybean seeds needs further study because its relationships with physiological quality, field establishment, and yield are controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of seed size on soybean establishment and seed physiological quality. In the field, a 2x3x3 factorial design was used, with two cultivars (M 5947 IPRO and 59HO124 IPRO), three seed sizes (5.5, 6.0, and 6.5 mm), and three sowing densities (280,000, 320,000, and 360,000 plants.ha-1). Agronomic traits and grain yield were evaluated. After harvest, only seeds from plots with a population of 320,000 plants were classified by size using circular sieves with 5.5-mm, 6.0-mm, 6.5-mm, and 7.0-mm mesh sizes. For the evaluation of physiological quality, a 2x4 factorial design was applied, with two cultivars and four seed sizes. Germination, seedling emergence, accelerated aging, seedling dry matter, and emergence speed index were evaluated. Smaller seeds gave rise to shorter plants with a lower first pod insertion height. Larger seeds had higher physiological quality. The M 5947 IPRO cultivar showed better seed performance and quality.

Seed treatment is an important procedure in soybean cultivation and is currently performed in two ways: industrial seed treatment (IST), performed by the seed companies industry, and OnFarm treatment, performedby the producer. The objective of this research was to compare the influence of industrial and OnFarm soybean seed treatment technologies, including the machines and processes, on the occurrence of mechanical damage and the functional quality of treatment. Soybean seeds were subjected to phytosanitary treatments with different processes and machines: (1) industrial treatment with a batch process; (2) industrial treatment with a continuous flow process, (3) OnFarm continuous flow treatment with dosage distribution via fixed-volume doser and seed mixing via worm screw; and (4) controlrepresented by untreated seeds. The occurrence of mechanical damage was evaluated by the sodium hypochlorite test. The functional quality of the treatments was analyzed by seed coating, determined by means of digital image processing; particle detachment (dust-off); and dose effectiveness of thiamethoxam, determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The treatment of soybean seeds in batch or continuous flow industrial systems ensures better seed coating, greater dose effectiveness, less particle detachment and a lower occurrence of mechanical damage compared to OnFarm application technology. The digital processing of high-resolution images is efficient for quantifying the coating of soybean seeds by phytosanitary products. Seed coating is directly related to dose effectiveness.
