Over the years, the number of vehicular traffic on the road has dramatically increased, causing the rate of road accidents also to increase. As a result, research on vehicle development and safety has significantly grown. One of the essential systems in autonomous vehicles for ensuring a secure circumstance for drivers and passengers is the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Braking/Steer Away, Lane-Keeping System, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Departure Warning System, and Lane Detection are examples of ADAS. Lane detection displays information specific to the geometrical features of lane line structures to the vehicle’s intelligent system to show the position of lane markings. This article reviews the methods employed for lane detection in an autonomous vehicle. A systematic literature review (SLR) has been carried out to analyze the most delicate approach to detecting the road lane for the benefit of the automation industry. One hundred and two publications from well-known databases were chosen for this review. The trend was discovered after thoroughly examining the selected articles on the method implemented for detecting the road lane from 2018 until 2021. The selected literature used various methods, with the input dataset being one of two types: self-collected or acquired from an online public dataset. In the meantime, the methodologies include geometric modeling and traditional methods, while AI includes deep learning and machine learning. The use of deep learning has been increasingly researched throughout the last four years. Some studies used stand-alone deep learning implementations for lane detection problems. Meanwhile, some research focuses on merging deep learning with other machine learning techniques and classical methodologies. Recent advancements imply that attention-mechanism has become a popular combined strategy with deep learning methods. The use of deep algorithms in conjunction with other techniques showed promising outcomes. This research aims to provide a complete overview of the literature on lane detection methods, highlighting which approaches are currently being researched and the performance of existing state-of-the-art techniques. This review yields a valuable foundation on lane detection techniques, challenges, and opportunities and supports new research works in this automation field. For further study, it is suggested to put more effort into accuracy improvement, increased speed performance, and more challenging works on various extreme conditions in detecting the road lane.

Advancements in technology have made deep learning a hot research area, and we see its applications in various fields. Its widespread use in silicon wafer defect recognition is replacing traditional machine learning and image processing methods of defect monitoring. This article presents a review of the deep learning methods employed for wafer map defect recognition. A systematic literature review (SLR) has been conducted to determine how the semiconductor industry is leveraged by deep learning research advancements for wafer defects recognition and analysis. Forty-four articles from well-known databases have been selected for this review. The articles’ detailed study identified the prominent deep learning algorithms and network architectures for wafer map defect classification, clustering, feature extraction, and data synthesis. The identified learning algorithms are grouped as supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and hybrid learning. The network architectures include different forms of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), and Auto-encoder (AE). Various issues of multi-class and multi-label defects have been addressed, solving data unavailability, class imbalance, instance labeling, and unknown defects. For future directions, it is recommended to invest more efforts in the accuracy of the data generation procedures and the defect pattern recognition frameworks for defect monitoring in real industrial environments.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is one of the most effective tools in collecting data autonomously going as recently as 5–10 years ago. A low deployment and maintenance cost WSN is highly recognized as one of the more advanced Internet of Things networks that can be deployed for a series of purposes namely environmental and industrial monitoring due to the majority of such systems run on expendable power source that offers WSN with a limited service lifetime. The aim of this paper is to review existing renewable energy and prospective approaches in energy harvesting strategy as a means of having a sustainable and low maintenance operation of WSN. Additionally, recent maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of solar energy harvesting is thoroughly discussed in a new perspective of the WSN framework. Semi-pilot cell fractional open-circuit voltage (SPC-FOCV) MPPT is a fairly new concept in WSN application that features less complicated configuration with reduced hardware requirements and lower cost. Recent research findings are evaluated throughout this paper leading to the SPC-FOCV MPPT materialization. A holistic discussion is made encompassing the advantages and disadvantages of the concept, its performance compared to conventional MPPT approaches and the future insight of the technology in WSN.

Present architecture of convolution neural network for diabetic retinopathy (DR-Net) is based on normal convolution (NC). It incurs high computational cost as NC uses a multiplicative weight that measures a combined correlation in both cross-channel and spatial dimension of layer’s inputs. This might cause the overall DR-Net architecture to be over-parameterised and computationally inefficient. This paper proposes EDR-Net – a new end-to-end, DR-Net architecture with depth-wise separable convolution module. The EDR-Net architecture was trained with DRKaggle-train dataset (35,126 images), and tested on two datasets, i.e. DRKaggle-test (53,576 images) and Messidor-2 (1,748 images). Results showed that the proposed EDR-Net achieved predictive performance comparable with current state-of-the-arts in detecting referable diabetic retinopathy (rDR) from fundus images and outperformed other light weight architectures, with at least two times less computation cost. This makes it more amenable for mobile device based computer-assisted rDR screening applications.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal peak detection is widely used in clinical applications. The peak point can be detected using several approaches, including time, frequency, time-frequency, and nonlinear domains depending on various peak features from several models. However, there is no study that provides the importance of every peak feature in contributing to a good and generalized model. In this study, feature selection and classifier parameters estimation based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) are proposed as a framework for peak detection on EEG signals in time domain analysis. Two versions of PSO are used in the study: (1) standard PSO and (2) random asynchronous particle swarm optimization (RA-PSO). The proposed framework tries to find the best combination of all the available features that offers good peak detection and a high classification rate from the results in the conducted experiments. The evaluation results indicate that the accuracy of the peak detection can be improved up to 99.90% and 98.59% for training and testing, respectively, as compared to the framework without feature selection adaptation. Additionally, the proposed framework based on RA-PSO offers a better and reliable classification rate as compared to standard PSO as it produces low variance model.

Algae represent the majority of the diversity on Earth and are a large group of organisms that have photosynthetic properties that are important to life. The species of algae are estimated to be more than 1 million, they play an important role in many fields such as agriculture, industry, food, medicine. It is important to determine the type of algae to determine if it is harmful or useful, and to indicate the health of the ecosystem, water quality, health, and safety risks. The conventional process of classifying algae is difficult, tedious, and time-consuming. Recently various computer vision techniques have been used to classify algae to overcome challenges and automate the process of classification. This paper presents a review of research done on image classification for microorganism algae using machine learning and deep learning techniques. The paper focuses on three important research questions to highlight the challenges of classifying microalgae. A systematic literature review or SLR has been conducted to determine how deep learning and machine learning have improved and enhanced automatic microalgae classification rather than manual classification. 51 articles have been included from well-known databases. The outcome of this SLR is beneficial due to the detailed analysis and comprehensive overview of the algorithms and the architectures and information about the dataset used in each included article. The future work focuses on getting a large dataset with high resolution, trying different methods to manage imbalance problems, giving more attention to the fusion of deep learning techniques and traditional machine learning techniques.
