Biography

Professor Manuel F Valero has been linked for more than 15 years to the University of La Sabana. During all this time, his work has been focused on the synthesis and characterization of polyurethane elastomers for different applications such as biomaterials. He has studied different biobased monomers such as fig oil, and additionally, he has tried to improve the properties of these materials by incorporating different biobased reinforcing fillers such as chitosan, cellulose nanocrystals, starch, or chemically modified starch. His research has focused on the search for new materials with better mechanical and biological properties, biocompatibility, and antimicrobial and antithrombogenic activity. He has obtained polyurethane-type bioelastomers for different applications as biomaterials such as non-absorbable sutures, cardiovascular implants, blood vessels and wound bandages. One of his most relevant works has been the evaluation of the performance of these materials in in vitro and in vivo models. The results have shown that the materials have better performance and greater biocompatibility than the original materials. In addition, from these, it was also evidenced that no secondary reactions or inflammation processes are generated. On the other hand, perfusion reactor models have been used for the evaluation of the viscoelastic properties of the materials. As a result of this, he is in the process of patenting the reactor control process.
