Nanoscale pore structure characteristics and their main controlling factors are key elements affecting the gas storage capacity, permeability, and the accumulation mechanism of shale. A multidisciplinary analytical program was applied to quantify the pore structure of all sizes of Xiamaling shale from Zhangjiakou, Hebei. The result implies that Mercury injection porosimetry (MIP) and low-pressure N2 curves of the samples can be divided into three and four types, respectively, reflecting different connectivity performances. The maximum CO2 adsorbing capacity increases with increasing total organic carbon (TOC) content, pore volume (PV), and surface area (SA) of the micropores are distributed in a three-peak type. The full-scale pore structure distribution characteristics reveal the coexistence of multiple peaks with multiple dominant scales and bi-peak forms with mesopores and micropores. The porosity positively correlates with the TOC and quartz content, but negatively correlates with clay mineral content. Organic matter (OM) is the main contributor to micropore and mesopore development. Smectite and illite/smectite (I/S) assist the development of the PV and SA of pores with different size. Illite promotes the development of the nanoscale PV, but is detrimental to the development of the SA. Thermal maturity controls the evolution of pores with different size, and the evolution model for the TOC-normalized PVs of different diameter scales is established. Residual hydrocarbon is mainly accumulated in micropores sized 0.3 to 1.0 nm and mesopores sized 40 nm, 2 nm and less than 10 nm. Since the samples were extracted, the pore space occupied by residual hydrocarbon was released, resulting in a remarkable increase in PV and SA.

A porphyritic granite intrusion was recently discovered in the Zhuanzhilian section of the Dongping gold deposit. There is as many as one tonnage of Au in the fractured shear zone within the porphyritic granite intrusion, but no relevant reports concerning the origin and age of the intrusion has been published as yet. In this paper, zircon U-Pb dating is used to study the geochronology of porphyritic granite, in order to find out the evidence of age and the relationship with gold mineralization. There are two groups of zircon 207Pb/235U-206Pb/238U concordant ages of porphyritic granites: The concordant age of 373.0 ± 3.5 Ma, with the weighted mean age of 373.0 ± 6.4 Ma; and the concordant age of 142.02 ± 1.2 Ma with the weighted mean age of 142.06 ± 0.84 Ma. We believe that the first group might represent the age of residual zircon of alkaline complex, while the second group might be related with main gold mineralization. The obtained results of the petrography and electron probe analysis indicate that the porphyritic quartz and porphyritic granite, as well as gold mineralization, might be products of a late replacement of tectonic-hydrothermal fluid, which was rich in Si, Na and K originally and later yielded gold-forming fluids.

The Bailinchuan alkaline syenite (BAS) is located in the easternmost part of the Triassic alkaline magmatic belt along the northern North China Craton (NCC). Based on a detailed study of the zircon U–Pb age, petrological, and geochemical data of the complex, the characteristics of the magmas system, petrogenesis and the nature of mantle source provide new constraints on the origin and tectonic setting of the Triassic alkaline belt. The BAS is composed of alkaline syenite and/or aegirine-nepheline syenite, with zircon U–Pb age of 226–229 Ma. Aegirine, Na-rich augite, biotite, orthoclase, and nepheline are the major minerals. Most of the zircons selected for the analysis show fine-scale to weak oscillatory growth zoning in CL images, suggesting a magmatic origin. Mineralogy, petrology and geochemical studies show that the parental magma of the BAS is SiO2-undersaturated, potassic, and is characterized by high contents of CaO, Fe2O3, K2O, Na2O. The BAS originated from a phlogopite-rich, enriched lithospheric mantle source in a garnet-stable area. The occurrence of the BAS, together with many other alkaline complexes of similar ages (235–209 Ma) in the northern NCC during the Late Triassic implies that the lithospheric mantle beneath the northern NCC was previously metasomatized by melts/fluids. Bailinchuan Late Triassic syenites were formed in a post-collisional extensional setting, which provides time constraints on the major geodynamic setting at the northern NCC.

Northwest Hebei province is one of the gold-producing areas in China. Based on a geochronological analysis of the Zhangjiakou-Xuanhua area, zircon U–Pb with an age of 2487–142 Ma and zircon fission-track (ZFT) with a cooling age of 155–66 Ma were obtained. Zircon U–Pb dating of the Xiaoyingpan deposit revealed two ages of 2487 ± 92 Ma and 1745 ± 89 Ma, representing the Archaean and Early Proterozoic metamorphism of the Sanggan Group. The ZFT cooling age of 155 ± 10 Ma represents the deposit’s lower limit metallogenic age. The Shuiquangou (SQG) alkaline complex emplaced at 388.9 ± 3.0 Ma and experienced magmatic activities until the Late Devonian (ca 377 Ma), considering the response to the collision between the Siberian plate and the North China Craton. The emplacement age of Shangshuiquan (SSQ) granite is 142.3 ± 1.1 Ma and is coeval with the thinning of the North China Craton during the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous. The intrusion of SSQ might partially reheat the SQG complex, resulting in the Yanshanian gold mineralization in Dongping. The SQG complex and SSQ granite underwent a relatively consistent rapid cooling process in the Cretaceous based on the ZFT ages.

A large number of intermediate basic volcanic rocks and porphyry Cu-Mo deposits as well as volcanic-hosted magnetite deposit have been recently discovered in the Xilekuduk area. However, no reports concerning petrogenesis and age or their relationship with mineralization have been published to date. The purpose of this study was to make up for the absence of previous studies on Devonian volcanic activities in the area and to confirm the relationship between two stages of volcanic activities and mineralization so as to provide important theoretical basis for mineral exploration. Based on research results of zircon U-Pb geochronology and element geochemistry of volcanic rocks in the area, the ages of dacite, andesite, and stomatal andesite are considered as 375.2 ± 2.9 Ma, 386.5 ± 3.0 Ma, and 317.9 ± 2.9 Ma, respectively, corresponding to the Middle Devonian and Late Carboniferous Period. The Devonian volcanic rocks belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series and island arc volcanic rocks, which are enriched in LREE, strongly enriched in large ion lithophile elements Th, Rb, Ba, and K and relatively depleted in high-field strength elements (HFSEs) Nb, Ta, and Ti. The Carboniferous volcanic rocks are enriched in LREE, as well as the large ion lithophile elements Th, Rb, Ba, and K are strongly enriched, while depleted in the HFSEs Nb, Ta, and Ti; moreover, the contents of TiO2and V are 0.94–0.97% and 178–183×10–6, which are higher than those of island arc basalts. According to mineralogical typomorphic characteristics and geochemical analysis, magnetite mineralization is divided into two phases. The early stratiform magnetite ore MT1 has magmatic characteristics, forming a volcanic rock type magnetite deposit related to Devonian volcanic eruption and sedimentation (375–386 Ma). The magnetite MT2 in the magnetite-quartz vein is considered as hydrothermal genesis, which is a metal mineral in the early metallogenic stage of Carboniferous (317.1 ± 2.9 Ma) volcanic eruption and subvolcanism, and may be related to porphyry molybdenum mineralization. Therefore, the volcanism and Fe-Cu-Mo mineralization in this area is characterized by multistage superimposed mineralization.
