This study aimed to investigate the effects of the size and weight content of waste rubber particles on the relevant performances of rubberized concrete. First, the fine aggregates were partially replaced by rubber particles of different sizes to produce rubberized concrete. Secondly, the mechanical and thermal insulation properties of rubberized concrete were investigated. Finally, microstructural analyses of rubberized concrete including scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and energy distribution spectroscopy (EDS) were examined. Experimental results indicated that uniaxial compressive strength of rubberized concrete was reduced, while the peak strain was gradually increased and thermal insulation properties were improved with the increase of rubber content or decrease of rubber particle size. In addition, rubber particles affected the failure modes, endowing concrete with weak brittleness and strong cracking resistance. Additionally, it was observed that the interfacial adhesion between the matrix rubber and the aggregates was weak under SEM, which seemed to be a key factor that reduced the strength of rubberized concrete.

Water inrush of tunnel face is one of the most common geological disasters during tunnel construction in China. Aiming at the rock mass with multi fractures in water-resistant strata ahead of karst tunnel, the compressive-shear cracking property is analyzed by fracture mechanics theory and the change law of rock bridge shear strength with branch crack propagated length under karst water pressure and geo-stress is studied according to Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion. Moreover, the critical water pressure of water-resistant strata with multi fractures under tension-shear failure is deduced. The safe thickness of water-resistant strata with multi fractures ahead of karst tunnel is established based on two band theory and critical water pressure, and the influence of karst water pressure, initial crack length, crack spacing, array pitch of cracks, lateral pressure coefficient and the angle between the crack and the maximum principal stress on the minimum safe thickness of water-resistant strata are discussed. A 3 Dimension Distinct Element Code (3DEC) considering the fluid-solid coupling effect and structural characteristics of rock mass is adopted to study the catastrophe process and the influence of karst cavity scale on displacement and seepage field in water-resistant rock mass ahead of tunnel in the process of sequential excavation. The numerical simulation results show that: The transition from the single effect of unloading on the extrusion displacement of karst tunnel face to combined action of unloading and karst water pressure occurs with the tunnel face advance; The displacement at each measuring point in water-resistant strata continues to increase in the process of tunnel excavation; The extrusion displacement and water flow velocity in tunnel face suddenly increase when the water inrush pathway is about to form; With the increase of karst cavity size, the minimum thickness of water-resistant strata, the displacement of measuring point and pore pressure of crack increase. The study results provide a reference for early warning and prevention of water inrush in karst tunnel face.

Tunnel engineering develops rapidly. To study the dynamic response of shield tunnel structure and its bottom soil layer caused by metro train operation, a three-dimensional finite-difference dynamic calculation method is used to establish a shield tunnel-soil layer coupling model based on the shield tunnel project of Maluan Central Station-Jimei Island Station of Xiamen Metro Line 6, and the dynamic response of tunnel structure and its bottom soil layer caused by metro train operation is calculated. The results show that: Under the action of train-induced vibration, the shield tunnel structure mainly bears compressive stress and generates compressive deformation. The dynamic response of tunnel structure represents a significant increasing trend with the enhancement of train-induced vibration load. Under the same load strength, dynamic response change amplitude of structure is not obvious with tunnel structural stiffness, stress is gradually increasing, and displacement is weakening. The deeper the soil depth at the bottom of the shield tunnel structure, the weaker the dynamic response of the soil layer. The stress response of the soil layer at the same depth is increasing with the train-induced vibration load improving, but the displacement response has a stage characteristic. The dynamic response of the soil layer at the same depth does not change obviously with the increase in shield tunnel structural stiffness, but the stress response gradually increases, and the displacement response becomes weak. In general, investigation of the dynamic response of the subway shield tunnel under train-induced vibration has important practical significance for maintaining the long-term safe operation of subway tunnels.

Tunnel construction adjacent to the fault fracture zone is prone to water inrush disasters, which pose a serious threat to the safety of tunnel construction. To provide theoretical support for the early warning and prevention of water inrush disasters of the tunnel adjacent to the water-rich faults, a numerical analysis based on the three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) was performed to study the evolution of the displacement and seepage fields of the water-resistant rock mass of a tunnel adjacent to a water-rich fault during the water inrush process by taking the Xianglushan tunnel as the research project. With reference to the obtained results, a grouting reinforcement scheme was developed, and its effectiveness was evaluated. The results indicated that as the tunnel face approached the water-rich fault fracture zone, the effect of water pressure gradually became obvious, and the displacement at the face continuously increased. When the tunnel face was excavated to the position 5 m from the fault, the displacement at the center of the face changed suddenly with a sudden increase in water pressure. The water-resistant rock mass ahead of the center of the face was damaged, and a water inrush disaster occurred in the tunnel. Numerical simulation results demonstrated the feasibility of the grouting reinforcement scheme. The assessment based on the borehole acoustic waves, borehole TV, geological radar detection, and convergence monitoring as well as the excavation results confirmed that the water inrush disasters in the 2# adit of Xianglushan tunnel adjacent to the water-rich fault were effectively prevented and controlled, which can provide a reference for the prevention and treatment of the frequent water inrush disasters in underground projects constructed in the water-rich fault area.
