Glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine) is the most frequently used broad-spectrum herbicide worldwide. Its mechanism of action is based on the inhibition of an enzyme that is essential to plant growth. Its intensive use has caused global contamination to occur, which has not only affected the ecosystems, but even food and other objects of common use. Thus, there is a pronounced need for developing analytical methods for glyphosate determination in different matrices. Here, an electrochemical competitive immunoassay, based on the use of antibody-modified magnetic particles, has been developed. Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) has been used as an enzymatic substrate. The extent of the affinity reaction has been achieved by monitoring the current value, due to the reduction of the enzymatic product. A disposable screen-printed electrochemical cell has been used. The calibration curve has been recorded in the 0–10,000 ng/L concentration range, with a detection limit of 5 ng/L and quantification limit of 30 ng/L. The electrochemical immunoassay has also been applied to the analysis of spiked beer samples.

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of glyphosate based on the monitoring of a complex formation between bis 5-phenyldipyrrinate of nickel (II) and the herbicide was developed. The method showed a short response time (10 s), high selectivity (very low interference from other pesticides and salts), and high sensitivity (LOD 2.07 × 10−7 mol/L, LOQ 9.87 × 10−7 mol/L, and a Kd from 1.75 × 10−6 to 6.95 × 10−6 mol/L). The Job plot showed that complex formation occurs with a 1:1 stoichiometry. The method was successfully applied in potable, urban, groundwater, and residual-treated water samples, showing high precision (0.34–2.9%) and accuracy (87.20–119.04%). The structure of the complex was elucidated through theoretical studies demonstrating that the nickel in the bis 5-phenyldipyrrinate forms a distorted octahedral molecular geometry by expanding its coordination number through one bond with the nitrogen and another with the oxygen of the glyphosate’ carboxyl group, at distances between 1.89–2.08 Å.

The Milpa System is an ancient agroecosystem that has played a crucial role in Mesoamerican agriculture for over 9,000 years, particularly in Mexico and Central America. This system provides essential ecosystem services, such as food production, soil quality restoration, biodiversity conservation and the transmission of ecological knowledge. The objective of this systematic review is to inventory and analyse the potential ecosystem services provided by the Milpa System and similar maize-based intercropping systems. The review followed the PRISMA methodology, ensuring rigorous and reproducible research across studies published worldwide in English and Spanish between 2017 and 2023. The analysis included 47 studies that identified a total of 38 distinct ecosystem services. Amongst these, five provisioning services were identified, with 32 articles highlighting food provision. Twenty regulation and maintenance services were discussed, with biodiversity conservation being the most prominent, mentioned in 24 articles. However, cultural services were under-represented, appearing in only 12 articles. Despite the limited research on the Milpa System’s ecosystem services, particularly outside of Mexico, the findings underscore the system’s critical role in promoting agricultural resilience, ensuring food security and conserving biodiversity. This review emphasises the need for increased research to preserve and promote the Milpa System as a sustainable agricultural model that contributes to the well-being of both local communities and broader ecosystems.

A simple and rapid method for the determination of dimethoate in water was developed based on the monitoring of the complex formation between bis 5-phenyldipyrrinate of nickel (II) and the herbicide dimethoate. The method showed a short response time (10 s), high selectivity (very low interference from other sulfate and salts), high sensitivity (limit of detection (LOD) 0.45 µM, limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 1.39 µM), and a Kd of 2.4 µM. Stoichiometry experiments showed that complex formation occurred with a 1:1 relation. The method was applied to different environmental water samples such as lagoon, stream, urban, and groundwater samples. The results indicated that independently from the water source, the method exhibited high precision (0.25–2.47% variation coefficient) and accuracy (84.42–115.68% recovery). In addition, the method was also tested using an effluent from a wastewater treatment plant from Mexico; however, the results indicated that the presence of organic matter had a pronounced effect on the detection.

Fungal biodiversity and ethnomycological knowledge are fundamental components of the biocultural identity of communities within the La Malinche National Park (PNM), a region of ecological and cultural significance in Mexico. This study documented the diversity of wild fungi and their uses in San Miguel Canoa, Puebla, through field excursions with local mushroom gatherers, interviews, and qualitative analysis. Key species such as Russula delica, Boletus aff. edulis, and Amanita basii were identified, playing a vital role in local gastronomy with traditional recipes like mole and pipián. Intergenerational knowledge transmission, crucial for identifying edible fungi and avoiding intoxications, highlights the importance of oral tradition. However, deforestation, illegal logging, and land-use change threaten fungal diversity, a problem exacerbated by the lack of effective conservation policies. The discussion highlights the interplay between biodiversity and culture, emphasizing the significance of the Wild Mushroom Fair organized by the Yolaltepetl collective as an effort to disseminate ethnomycological knowledge and promote the conservation of the PNM. Such community-driven initiatives represent a sustainable model that integrates environmental protection with cultural strengthening. The study concludes that protecting the PNM requires a holistic approach, merging ecological conservation with the recognition of biocultural knowledge. This is essential to preserve both biodiversity and cultural heritage, ensuring their sustainability for future generations.

Soils are the largest terrestrial carbon (C) reservoirs and play a key role in regulating the global C cycle and supporting essential ecosystem services. Soil C sequestration is a viable strategy to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentrations and mitigate climate change. This study quantified soil C fractions and litter C stocks across five vegetation types in El Chico National Park, Hidalgo, Mexico (2015.55 ha): pine–oak, oyamel–oak, cedar, oyamel–Tlaxcal, and oyamel forests, all occurring under comparable climatic and edaphic conditions. Soil organic matter (SOM) was quantified as the organic fraction originating from decomposed plant and animal residues. No statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) were found among vegetation types for organic matter, total C, oxidizable C, or recalcitrant (non-oxidizable) C, indicating relative homogeneity across strata. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were detected in organo-mineral C (Cp) and poorly oxidizable C (Cdox), with oyamel–Tlaxcal and oyamel forests showing the highest values, respectively, suggesting enhanced potential for C stabilization and turnover. Oyamel forests stored 32.94% of total soil organic C and contributed disproportionately to park-wide C stocks given their dominance (85.6% of the total area). Leaf litter contained on average 6.60 Mg C ha−1, representing 13,302.63 Mg C and 48,836.8 Mg CO2 across the park. When integrated with soil C to 60 cm depth, total C and CO2 stocks reached 643,474.26 Mg and 2,361,566.66 Mg, respectively. These findings highlight the critical role of oyamel forests as the main carbon sink in the park and reinforce the importance of conserving these ecosystems as a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation.
