High complexity of business processes is a continually growing problem in real-life organisations. Hence, modelling a workflow poses a challenge for different participants. Many methods have been proposed for automatic generation of process models. This paper aims at presenting an approach for uniting knowledge from a number of stakeholders. In essence, a collection of tabular tasks definitions are combined into one classification of unordered activities. Later, semantic analysis of the input definitions is suggested in order to fuse them based on similarity of parameters. Using a set of predefined constraints and a dedicated construction algorithm, the resulting spreadsheet-based structure can then be converted into a model of a process.

In recent years, blockchains systems have seen massive adoption in retail and enterprise environments. Cryptocurrencies become more widely adopted, and many online businesses have decided to add the most popular ones, like Bitcoin or Ethereum, next to Visa or Mastercard payments. Due to the decentralized nature of blockchain-based systems, there is no possible way to revert confirmed transactions. It may result in losses caused by human error or poor design of the user interface. We created a cryptocurrency wallet with a full on-chain solution for aliasing accounts and tokens to improve user experience and avoid unnecessary errors. The aliasing system consists of a number of smart contracts deployed on top of the blockchain network that give the ability to register aliases to accounts and tokens and use them instead of opaque addresses. Our solution shows how performant modern blockchains are and presents a way of building fully decentralized applications that can compete with centralized ones in terms of performance.

Recommendation systems play an important role in e-commerce turnover by presenting personalized recommendations. Due to the vast amount of marketing content online, users are less susceptible to these suggestions. In addition to the accuracy of a recommendation, its presentation, layout, and other visual aspects can improve its effectiveness. This study evaluates the visual aspects of recommender interfaces. Vertical and horizontal recommendation layouts are tested, along with different visual intensity levels of item presentation, and conclusions obtained with a number of popular machine learning methods are discussed. Results from the implicit feedback study of the effectiveness of recommending interfaces for four major e-commerce websites are presented. Two different methods of observing user behavior were used, i.e., eye-tracking and document object model (DOM) implicit event tracking in the browser, which allowed collecting a large amount of data related to user activity and physical parameters of recommending interfaces. Results have been analyzed in order to compare the reliability and applicability of both methods. Observations made with eye tracking and event tracking led to similar results regarding recommendation interface evaluation. In general, vertical interfaces showed higher effectiveness compared to horizontal ones, with the first and second positions working best, and the worse performance of horizontal interfaces probably being connected with banner blindness. Neural networks provided the best modeling results of the recommendation-driven purchase (RDP) phenomenon.

This paper explores a yet another approach to Explainable Artificial Intelligence. The proposal consists in application of Constraint Programming to discovery of internal structure and parameters of a given black-box system. Apart from specification of a sample of the input and output values, some presupposed knowledge about the possible internal structure and functional components is required. This knowledge can be parameterized with respect to functional specification of internal components, connections among them, and internal parameters. Models of constraints are put forward and example case studies illustrate the proposed ideas.

Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is a widely used standard for modeling and managing process knowledge among organizations. In this paper, we present a concept of a natural language description generator for business process models. Such a generator is expected to reduce the time it takes to describe a process work manually. It may also lower the risk of making a mistake during this task, especially when working on more complex models. The outcome of executing the proposed program is a description of the given business process written in the form of understandable sentences in the Polish language. Our results show that the generated descriptions reflect the original model of the given process, which means that its potential conversion back to the BPMN model will result in a model close to the original one.

Business process models are a way of knowledge representation which is widely exploited in various areas of economy and industry. They illustrate workflows executed manually by people, as well as automated sequences of tasks processed by computer software. Manual creation of a workflow model is a complex activity which requires a significant workload. This is caused by the necessity to collect and transform input data from different sources. As a solution to this problem, several techniques have been elaborated to extract knowledge from different representations in order to generate a correct business process model. In this paper, an overview and classification of such techniques which include generating process models from representations such as: natural language text, various notations, other models or logs obtained from an information system is put forward.

Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is a well established standard for modeling and managing process knowledge of organizations. Recently, the Decision Model and Notation (DMN) standard has been proposed as a complementary technique to enact particular type of knowledge, namely the organizational rules (decision logic). An integrated model of processes and rules may bring numerous benefits to the knowledge management systems, but the modeling process itself is not a trivial task. To this end, methods that facilitate prototyping and semi-automatic construction of the integrated model are of great importance. In this paper, we propose a method for generating business processes with decisions in BPMN+DMN standards, using a prototyping method called ARD. We present an algorithm that, starting from an ARD model, generates an executable process model along with decision specification. Such a model can be treated as a structured rule base that provides explicit inference flow determined by the process control flow.

Modeling a business process is a complex task which involves different participants who should be familiar with the chosen modeling notation. In this paper, we propose an idea of generating business process models based on a declarative specification. Given an unordered list of process activities along with their input and output data entities, our method generates a synthetic, complete log of a process. The generated task sequences can then serve as an input to a selected process mining method or be processed by an algorithm constructing a BPMN model directly based on the log and additional information included in the declarative process specification.

Business process models help to visualize processes of an organization. In enterprises, these processes are often specified in internal regulations, resolutions or other law acts of a company. Such descriptions, like task lists, have mostly form of enumerated lists or spreadsheets. In this paper, we present a mapping of process model elements into a spreadsheet representation. As a process model can be represented in various notations, this can be seen as an interoperability solution for process knowledge interchange between different representations. In presenting the details of the solution, we focus on the popular BPMN representation, which is a de facto standard for business process modeling. We present a method how to generate a BPMN process model from a spreadsheet-based representation. In contrast to the other existing approaches concerning spreadsheets, our method does not require explicit specification of gateways in the spreadsheet, but it takes advantage of nested list form. Such a spreadsheet can be created either manually or merged from the task list specifications provided by users.

Development of modern software systems consists of many different phases, the sequence of whom is referred to as the software life cycle. During these phases, business analysts gather requirements from clients and try to design a system in order to fulfil these requirements. Software design of complex systems exploits various notations for representing knowledge about system structure and behaviour, decisions, processes and different cases. These elements are modelled using such graphical notations, maintained by Object Management Group (OMG), such as UML (Unified Modelling Language), DMN (Decision Model and Notation), BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation), and CMMN (Case Management Model and Notation). In this paper, we present our work-in-progress analysis of the current state of the art in knowledge interchange for these notations. Moreover, we identify the integration or interchange approaches in terms of application areas. Our goal is to provide an input for an integrated method of designing systems with the use of these notations.

The goal of the research was to compare the selected traditional bankruptcy prediction models, namely linear discriminant analysis and logit (logistic) models, with the technique called Gradient Boosting. In particular, the paper verifies two research hypotheses (verification was based on the balanced sample of Polish companies): [H1]: Gradient Boosted Decision Trees algorithm is more accurate than traditional bankruptcy prediction models: logit and discriminant analysis; [H2]: Boosted Decision Trees use both: financial ratios and normalized data from financial statements, but the same accuracy one can achieve only with the normalized data and the bigger number of weak learners.

Designing business process models plays a vital role in business process management. The acquisition of such models may consume up to 60% of the project time. This time can be shortened using methods for the automatic or semi-automatic generation of process models. In this paper, we present a user-friendly method of business process composition. It uses a set of predefined constraints to generate a synthetic log of the process based on a simplified, unordered specification, which describes activities to be performed. Such a log can be used to generate a correct BPMN model. To achieve this, we propose the use of one of the existing process discovery algorithms or executing the activity graph-based composition algorithm, which generates the process model directly from the input log file. The proposed approach allows process participants to take part in process modeling. Moreover, it can be a support for business analysts or process designers in visualizing the workflow without the necessity to design the model explicitly in a graphical editor. The BPMN diagram is generated as an interchangeable XML file, which allows its further modification and adjustment. The included comparative analysis shows that our method is capable of generating process models characterized by high flow complexity and can support BPMN constructs, which are sufficient for about 70% of business cases.

Manual extraction of business process models from technical documentation is a time-consuming task. Several approaches to generating such process models have been proposed. We present a proposal of a new method for extracting business process from natural language text through intermediate process model using the spreadsheet-based representation. Such intermediate model is transformed into a valid BPMN process model. Our method is enhanced with semantic analysis of the text, allows for quick check of the transformation result and manual correction during this process. As the obtained BPMN model is structured, it is easier to check its correctness.

Model driven approach uses distinct models for representing various kinds of complex knowledge. Use of appropriate models allows for taking advantage of formal checking, testing, and validating possibilities available for the models. Although the notations do not provide any design method or software process, this paper offers a step to integrated modeling using them. We present an overview of the existing OMG solutions for knowledge representation used in software engineering, focusing on UML, BPMN, DMN and CMMN models and the diagrams provided by these notations. We perform an analysis of these approaches in terms of Kruchten’s 4+1 view model architecture as well as the Zachman Framework.

Business Processes describe the ways in which operations are carried out in order to accomplish the intended objectives of organizations. A process can be depicted using a modeling notation, such as Business Process Model and Notation. Process model can also describe operational aspects of every task; but in a properly designed model, the detailed aspects of low-level logic should be delegated to external services, especially to a Business Rule Engine. Business Rules support the specification of knowledge in a declarative manner and can be successfully used for specification of details for process tasks and events. However, there is no unified model of process integrated with rules that ensures data types consistency. Thus, the paper presents a formal description of the integration of Business Processes with Business Rules. We provide a general model for such integration as well as the model applied to a specific rule representation from the Semantic Knowledge Engineering approach.

Process models help organizations to visualize and optimize their activities, and achieve their business goals in a more efficient way. Modeling a business process requires exact information about possible execution sequences of the activities as well as process modeling notation knowledge. We present a method of business process composition based on the constraint programming technique. Taking task specifications as the input, our solution can generate a workflow log which can be used to discover the model using any process mining technique.
