For a general multi-coil magnetic coupling wireless power transfer (MC-WPT) system with different coil properties and non-negligible cross couplings, there is no analytical solution which connects the resonant frequencies of the system to its electric parameters. Establishing such a generalized analytical solution not only permits quantitative analysis of resonant points but also provides a generic platform for the physical interpretation of resonance. For this purpose, a novel modeling and analysis method of integrating time-domain and frequency-domain is proposed in this paper, with that all possible resonant points of arbitrary coil MC-WPT systems can be quickly and accurately determined. Firstly, an accurate state space model of a general MC-WPT system with arbitrary number of transmitters, repeaters and receivers is established and the analytical current response on each circuit is derived. Then several key system concepts about resonance are elucidated, based on which the generalized analytical expressions of resonant points of MC-WPT systems, including resonant frequencies and corresponding powers and efficiencies, are derived. Further, the physical interpretation along with the mathematic relationships of several key easy-confusing concepts are deduced, which provides systematic theoretical criteria for the selection of operating frequency to achieve the resonant states for MC-WPT systems.

In order to improve the power transfer efficiency and ensure the space cleanliness of power transfer direction in inductive coupled wireless power transfer (WPT) system, a new U-coil WPT system is proposed. Based on the mutual inductance coupling theory, a new methodology for ensuring that a U-coil system is more energy efficient than a two-coil counterpart is presented in this paper. The theoretical proof and the conditions for meeting the objective are derived and practically verified in a practical prototype. The experimental results show: 1) comparing with two-coil system, power transfer efficiency can be improved more than ten times by using U-coil system; and 2) with the same power transfer efficiency principle, the dimension of primary and load coils in U-coil system shrinks at least 66% comparing with that of two-coil system. The U-coil system not only improves power transfer efficiency but also ensures the cleanliness of the space along the energy transfer direction.

To reveal the general characteristic of the maximum power transfer points of MC-WPT systems, and to quickly and accurately determine all possible maximum power transfer points for arbitrary coil MC-WPT systems, a novel theoretical analysis method is proposed in this paper. Based on the modal theory, an accurate time-domain model of an n-coil MC-WPT system is established and the analytical current response on each coil is derived. According to the current response of the load, a detailed power spectrum distribution is presented, based on which the mathematic expressions of all possible maximum power transfer points, including the maximum output powers and corresponding operating frequencies, are deduced. The theoretical results are verified in experiment prototypes practically. The experimental results show that: 1) the output power reaches its maximum value at the modal frequencies rather than the designed natural frequency of the resonators in MC-WPT systems; 2) there are n modal frequencies of an n-coil MC-WPT system. The analysis results provide useful information to choose the operating frequency for practical MC-WPT systems with arbitrary number of coils.
In order to implement the omnidirectional wireless power transfer (WPT), a novel three-phase-shifted drive omnidirectional WPT system is proposed. This system is comprised of three independent phase-adjusted excitation sources, three orthogonal transmitting coils, and one planar receiving coil. Based on the mutual coupling theory, the power transfer efficiency is derived and the corresponding control mechanism for maximizing this efficiency is presented. This control mechanism only depends on the currents’ root-mean-square (RMS) values of the three transmitting coils and simple calculations after each location and/or posture change of the receiving coil, which provides the real-time possibility to design an omnidirectional WPT system comparing with the other omnidirectional systems. In aid of computer emulation technique, the efficiency characteristic versus the omnidirectional location and posture of the receiving coil is analyzed, and the analytical results verify the validity of the control mechanism. Lastly, a hardware prototype has been set up, and its omnidirectional power transmission capacity has been successfully verified. The experimental results show that the wireless power is omnidirectional and it can be effectively transmitted to a load even though its receiving coil moves and/or rotates in a 3-D energy region.
Simultaneous wireless power and data transfer (SWPDT) technology is usually needed in wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. In this paper, to achieve the efficient and stable SWPDT, the signal to noise rate (SNR) is first optimized through the analysis of data transmission gain and the interference of power transfer on data transfer. In order to reduce the interference of power channel to data transfer channel, the compensation topology of double-sided LCC and the band-stop networks are used. To solve the problem of SNR limitation, the coupling relationships between each circuit are taken into consideration and a matching method of resonance parameters to improve the SNR is presented. Based on the relationship between SNR and the parameters of data transfer channel, an optimization design method focused on parameters of data transfer channel for improving the SNR is presented. Finally, the feasibility and the correctness of the parameter design method proposed in this paper is verified by simulation and experiment.
