Introduction: The conditioning procedures for glass-based ceramic restorations before adhesive cementation are generally recognized. In the case of polycrystalline ceramics, which include zirconium oxide, there is still no standardized protocol. The aim of this work was to present conditioning methods of the cementation surface of zirconium oxide fixed dentures. The new generation high translucency zirconia has been also considered. Material and method: The following keywords for the PUBMED and EMBASE databases were used: zirconium oxide, zirconium oxide with increased translucency, bond strength, bending strength, surface treatment. The inclusion criteria were original papers in English published between 2015–2021. Results: Out of 1537 publications, 53 articles were selected for the study, covering methods of conditioning zirconium ceramics, including new materials with increased translucency. These procedures were divided into 5 main groups. Summary: Due to the widespread use of zirconia ceramics and the introduction of new zirconia-based materials, the use of a predictable and standardized cementation protocol is one of the most important factors contributing to the long-term clinical success of prosthetic restorations. Therefore, the research showed differences in the properties of the covered materials after conditioning. It suggests the need to create separate conditioning protocols for highly translucent and traditional zirconia.
Apart from local lesions, the presence of dental plaque may also have an effect on health, especially in people with general diseases. The aim of this project was to assess the oral hygiene of patients prosthetically treated at the Dental Prosthetics Clinic of the University Dental Clinic in Krakow (Poland) using fixed and removable dentures and to determine the demographic relationships and data related to the education of the respondents. The research material consisted of 120 patients who used fixed (group I) and removable (group II) restorations. Basic dental examinations and oral hygiene examinations were carried out with the use of the API (Approximal Plaque Index) and PI (Plaque Index) plaque indices. This study presents the percentage of respondents in terms of sex, place of residence, and education. The mean PI (Plaque Index) values were 46.73% (Group I) and 50.05% (Group II). (p = 0.4839). The mean values of API (Approximal Plaque Index) amounted to 65.14% (Group I) and 68.94% (Group II) (p = 0.4695). Patients using dentures showed insufficient oral hygiene, and the hygiene status of patients did not depend on the type of dentures used. The group that is most often treated with prosthetics is women with secondary education. The most numerous group of patients at the Dental Prosthetics Clinic are people living in large cities which results from easier access to health care.
Background/Objectives: The purpose of this study was to indicate factors influencing the healing of maxillary sinusitis of endodontic origin (MSEO) after non-surgical endodontic treatment. Methods: The study was performed retrospectively on medical records and CBCT data of 114 teeth in 114 patients, who were referred to endodontic treatment between 2016 and 2024, performed by the same operator and according to the same treatment protocol. Fifteen factors were chosen for their possible influence on the healing of MSEO. Results: The rate of the complete healing of MSEO after RCT was 76.32%. The healing of MSEO was higher when CHX was applied in the final irrigation protocol (p = 0.022) and was less likely when there was a flare-up in-between visits or after obturation of the canals (p = 0.002). MSEO was more likely to heal when a tooth was treated in two appointments than with single-visit RCT (p = 0.012). The number of endodontic interventions significantly influenced the healing of MSEO, as it was less likely to heal when there was more than one endodontic retreatment for a tooth (p = 0.01). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this retrospective study, four factors significantly influenced the healing of MSEO, and these should be taken into consideration in obtaining treatment protocols for dental-induced sinusitis and the better assessment of the possible success of this non-invasive treatment approach.
Orthodontic appliances discolour over treatment time, and a yellowish plaque builds up on the contact area of the brackets, adhesive and teeth. Brilliant Blue-based plaque-staining agents (BBPSAs), which increase tooth brushing efficiency, have the potential to support the maintenance of proper oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment. However, they exhibit strong colouring properties, and their impact on the aesthetics of braces remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of commercially available BBPSAs on the colour of aesthetic orthodontic materials. A light-cured, colour-changing orthodontic adhesive and new-generation, monocrystalline, sapphire brackets were chosen for the experiments. The effect of the staining agent on the tested materials was investigated in terms of the reaction temperature and time, as well as the presence of black tea-induced impurities on the materials. The CIELAB (Commission Internationale de L’éclairage L* a* b*) colour system parameters were measured, and the colour differences (ΔE*ab and ΔE00—the Commission Internationale de L’éclairage 2000 colour-difference) were determined for the materials under several experimental conditions. The braces’ green-red colour expression was positively affected by the BBPSA. Under in vitro conditions, the regular use of the BBPSA for 90 days visibly improved the unfavourable colour change caused by the black tea.
Background/Objectives: Half of diagnosed unilateral maxillary sinusitis may have odontogenic origin, and root canal treatment (RCT) can be beneficial as a single-mode treatment for full resolution of maxillary sinusitis of endodontic origin (MSEO) symptoms. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) on the healing of MSEO after non-surgical endodontic treatment. Methods: A single-center, retrospective study was conducted on CBCT data and medical records of 240 patients, who underwent non-surgical endodontic treatment, performed by the same operator between 2016 and 2025. One hundred and thirty-six teeth entered the study due to inclusion/exclusion criteria. Results: Complete healing was observed in 75.74% of the cases (n = 103). The tooth most frequently associated with MSEO was the first upper molar (52.21%, n = 71). PUI was applied in 66.91% of the treatments (n = 91). PUI was an independent predictor of MSEO healing (p = 0.001; 95% CI [1.768; 9.136]). When PUI was introduced in RCT, complete healing of MSEO was observed in 84.62% of the cases (n = 77). PUI was independently associated with higher odds of radiological resolution of MSEO in univariate logistic regression (OR = 4.019) and multiple logistic regression (OR = 12.388) models. Conclusions: PUI application in the irrigation protocol was associated with higher rates of MSEO healing after non-surgical endodontic treatment (p = 0.001; 95% CI [1.768; 9.136]). The rate of MSEO healing after non-surgical RCT is high (75.74%); therefore it should be considered as a single-mode treatment option in cases of unilateral maxillary sinusitis.
Prosthetic treatment aims to provide functional rehabilitation of the stomatognathic system, which is also associated with an improvement in the overall functioning of the entire organism. Permanent restorations – crowns, bridges, as well as posts, are the most commonly used restorations in...
