As an indispensable material for animals, plants and human beings, obtaining accurate water body information rapidly is of great significance to maintain the balance of ecosystems and ensure normal production and the life of human beings. Due to its independence of the time of day and the weather conditions, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data have been increasingly applied in the extraction of water bodies. However, there is a great deal of speckle noise in SAR images, which seriously affect the extraction accuracy of water. At present, most of the processing methods are filtering methods, which will cause the loss of detailed information. Based on the characteristic of side-looking SAR, this paper proposed a self-adaptive thresholding approach for automatic water extraction based on an OTSU algorithm and distance block. In this method, the whole images were firstly divided into uniform image blocks through a distance layer which was produced by the distance to the orbit. Then, a self-adaptive processing was conducted for merging blocks. The OTSU algorithm was used to obtain a threshold for classification and the Jeffries–Matusita (JM) distance was calculated with the classification result. The merge processing continued until the separability of image blocks reached the maximum. Subsequently, we started from the next block to repeat the merger, and so on until all blocks were processed. Ten study areas around the world and the local Dongting Lake area were applied to test the feasibility of the proposed method. In comparison with five other global threshold segmentation algorithms such as the traditional OTSU, MOMENTS, MEAN, ISODATA and MINERROR, the proposed method obtains the highest overall accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficient (KC), while this approach also demonstrates greater robustness in the analysis of time series. The findings of this study offer an effective method to improve water detection accuracy as well as reducing the influence of speckle noise and retaining details in the image.
Land cover mapping in mountainous areas is a notoriously challenging task due to the rugged terrain and high spatial heterogeneity of land surfaces as well as the frequent cloud contamination of satellite imagery. Taking Southwestern China (a typical mountainous region) as an example, this paper established a new HC-MMK approach (Hierarchical Classification based on Multi-source and Multi-temporal data and geo-Knowledge), which was especially designed for land cover mapping in mountainous areas. This approach was taken in order to generate a 30 m-resolution land cover product in Southwestern China in 2010 (hereinafter referred to as CLC-SW2010). The multi-temporal native HJ (HuanJing, small satellite constellation for disaster and environmental monitoring) CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) images, Landsat TM (Thematic Mapper) images and topographical data (including elevation, aspect, slope, etc.) were taken as the main input data sources. Hierarchical classification tree construction and a five-step knowledge-based interactive quality control were the major components of this proposed approach. The CLC-SW2010 product contained six primary categories and 38 secondary categories, which covered about 2.33 million km2 (accounting for about a quarter of the land area of China). The accuracies of primary and secondary categories for CLC-SW2010 reached 95.09% and 87.14%, respectively, which were assessed independently by a third-party group. This product has so far been used to estimate the terrestrial carbon stocks and assess the quality of the ecological environments. The proposed HC-MMK approach could be used not only in mountainous areas, but also for plains, hills and other regions. Meanwhile, this study could also be used as a reference for other land cover mapping projects over large areas or even the entire globe.
Compared to traditional coal mines, the mining-induced dynamic deformation of drilling solution mining activities may result in even more serious damage to surface buildings and infrastructures due to the different exploitation mode. Therefore, long-term dynamic monitoring and analysis of rock salt mines is extremely important for preventing potential geological damages. In this work, the small baseline subset Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SBAS-InSAR) technique with Sentinel−1A imagery is utilized to monitor the ground surface deformation of a rock salt mining area. The time-series analysis is carried out to obtain the spatial–temporal characteristics of land subsidence caused by drilling solution mining activities. A typical rock salt mine in Changde, China is selected as the test site. Twenty-four scenes of Sentinel−1A image data acquired from June 2015 to January 2017 are used to obtain the time-series subsidence of the test mine. The temporal–spatial evolution of the derived settlement funnels is revealed. The time-series deformation on typical feature points has been analyzed. Experimental results show that the obtained drilling solution mining-induced subsidence has a spatial characteristic of multiplied peaks along the transversal direction. Temporally, the large-scale surface settlement for the rock salt mine area begins to appear in September 2016, with a time lag of 8 months, and shows an obvious seasonal fluctuation. The maximum cumulative subsidence is detected up to 199 mm. These subsiding characteristics are consistent with the connected groove mining method used in drilling water solution mines. To evaluate the reliability of the results, the SBAS-derived results are compared with the field-leveling measurements. The estimated root mean square error (RMSE) of ±11 mm indicates a high consistency.
Grazing intensity (GI) is an important indicator for grazing situations in pastoral areas. However, it has been difficult to be observed directly in the field, due to the randomness and dynamics of the grazing behavior of livestock. Consequently, the lack of actual GI information has become a common issue in studies on quantitatively estimating GI. In this paper, a novel quantitative estimation method is proposed based on the Space-Air-Ground integrated monitoring technology. It systematically integrates GPS tracking technology, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) observation technology, and satellite remote sensing technology. Taking Xiangdong Village on the Zoige Plateau as a study area, the trajectory data and UAV images were acquired by the GPS tracking experiments and UAV observation experiments, respectively. The GI at paddock scale (PGI) was then generated with the Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) algorithm and the above data. Taking the generated PGI as training data, an estimation model of GI at region scale (RGI) was constructed by using the time-series satellite remote sensing images and random forest regression algorithm. Finally, the time-series RGI data with a spatial resolution of 10 m in Xiangdong Village were produced by the above model. The accuracy assessment demonstrated that the generated time-series RGI data could reflect the spatial-temporal heterogeneity of actual GI, with a mean absolute error of 0.9301 and r2 of 0. 8573. The proposed method provides a new idea for generating the actual GI on the ground and the time-series RGI data. This study also highlights the feasibility and potential of using the Space-Air-Ground integrated monitoring technology to generate time-series RGI data with high spatial resolution. The generated time-series RGI data would provide data support for the formulation of policies and plans related to the sustainable development of animal husbandry.
Common seasonal variations in Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinate time series always exist, and the modeling and correction of the seasonal signals are helpful for many geodetic studies using GPS observations. A spatiotemporal model was proposed to model the common seasonal variations in vertical GPS coordinate time series, based on independent component analysis and varying coefficient regression method. In the model, independent component analysis (ICA) is used to separate the common seasonal signals in the vertical GPS coordinate time series. Considering that the periodic signals in GPS coordinate time series change with time, a varying coefficient regression method is used to fit the separated independent components. The spatiotemporal model was then used to fit the vertical GPS coordinate time series of 262 global International GPS Service for Geodynamics (IGS) GPS sites. The results show that compared with least squares regression, the varying coefficient method can achieve a more reliable fitting result for the seasonal variation of the separated independent components. The proposed method can accurately model the common seasonal variations in the vertical GPS coordinate time series, with an average root mean square (RMS) reduction of 41.6% after the model correction.

Topography data are essential for land management, hydrology, and earth science applications. The topography in a riparian zone varies with time. Available global digital elevation models (GDEMs) do not satisfy the hydrological and environmental modeling requirements for riparian zones. In this study, a novel waterline method was proposed to acquire the digital elevation model (DEM) of riparian zones. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are used to extract waterlines and corresponding water level is applied to acquire the elevation. The uneven water surfaces are considered to acquire the elevation of waterlines and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) DEM is used to interpolate the elevation of pixels without waterlines. The proposed method is applied in the riparian zone of Three Gorges Reservoir and Dongting Lake to test its feasibility. More than 80 Sentinel-1 SAR images at different water levels within three years are used to detect waterlines. Based on corresponding water level of hydrological stations, the elevation of waterlines are acquired via inverse distance weighting method. The distance layer and slope derived from the original SRTM DEM are used to interpolate the elevation of pixels between waterlines. The DEM generated by the proposed method is compared against the DEM derived in 2017, SRTM DEM, the DEM which does not include the uneven effects, and Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite -2 (ICESat-2) ATL08. The good performance of the proposed method implies its high efficiency in revealing riparian zone topography.
