This article presents a calculation-based methodology to determine the dominant event class in each of the phases of disasters being analysed, and to address the question of whether different disasters have similarities at crucial times in each phase of the disaster. Our approach is based on event network analysis. Disasters can be modelled using block diagrams and multiphase process trees. We propose trees in this article can be used as a tool for modelling phases of a disaster. The starting point for developing these models was fault tree analysis used for modelling the reliability structure of complex systems. This study demonstrates the possibility of using dual fault trees to describe the process as opposed to the structure. In our analyses, we examined four major disasters of production platforms that occurred in the last 50 years: Ixtoc I, Piper Alpha, Petrobras 36 and Deep Water Horizon. The course of each of these disasters has been described, the basic events of these disasters have been isolated, and assigned to event classes. The hierarchical importance of events was determined using the Birnbaum reliability measure, Birnbaum structural measure, Fussell-Vesely measure, criticality measure and improvement potential. For each phase of the analysed disasters, event importance is ranked, and the most important events that contributed to the phase are identified. General principles on the analysed disasters and the methodology used are also discussed.

One of the significant problems in the safe operation of vessels is the behavior of the ship on the wave. Of all degrees of freedom, the greatest threat to the safety of a ship is associated with excessive rolling. One of the best methods to improve the safety of a ship in this field is to carry out experiments on the ship model, performed at her design stage. The problem is that the model tests are costly. An alternative is to conduct simulation tests based on numerical models. The primary goal of the article is to present the results of the simulation regarding the determination of parameters describing the risk areas of chaotic rolling for the ship designed for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG carrier) and offshore support vessel (OSV). The first discusses the state of knowledge on mathematical modeling of oscillations. Then, the theory of nonlinear differential equations is presented, and the mathematical model of ship rolling is described. This model is used to prepare and conduct a numerical simulation in the Mathematica package. The results of these studies and their discussion constitute the central part of the article. Finally, the conclusions are presented.

Nowadays, transport is the basis for the functioning of national, continental, and global economies. Thus, many governments recognize it as a critical element in ensuring the daily existence of societies in their countries. Those responsible for the proper operation of the transport sector must have the right tools to model, analyze, and optimize its elements. One of the most critical problems is the need to prevent bottlenecks in transport networks. Thus, the main aim of the article was to define the parameters characterizing the transportation network vulnerability and select algorithms to support their search. The parameters proposed are based on characteristics related to domination in graph theory. The domination, edge-domination concepts, and related topics, such as bondage-connected and weighted bondage-connected numbers, were applied as the tools for searching and identifying the bottlenecks in transportation networks. Furthermore, the algorithms for finding the minimal dominating set and minimal (maximal) weighted dominating sets are proposed. This way, the exemplary academic transportation network was analyzed in two cases: stationary and dynamic. Some conclusions are presented. The main one is the fact that the methods given in this article are universal and applicable to both small and large-scale networks. Moreover, the approach can support the dynamic analysis of bottlenecks in transport networks.

The main source of information on the situation across the sea basins used by operators of shipping monitoring systems is a network of coastal radar stations. Presently, it is possible to gather navigational information from many individual radar stations simultaneously, which may be used for improving the accuracy of vessel position fixing. However, without making other estimates, we obtain an inconsistent image comprising multiple echoes of the same ship, and as such it is impossible to say which echo presents the vessel on the move. Another problem is the method of performing radar observations, which significantly affects the accuracy of position fixing. The estimated radar distance is encumbered with a gross error in the case of large vessels, as the position of a large vessel is not the same as the position of the edge of the radar echo to which the estimation is made. In this paper, the authors present a method to adjust the measured radar distance. The proposed method may be automated easily, which would significantly enhance VTS positioning processes.

The paper presents the approach to business continuity of critical infrastructures with impact of climate-weather change process. First, the review of known results about business continuity management, reliability, safety and risk analysis is done. In the next step, the climate-weather change process and related reliability indicators are introduced. Moreover, the critical infrastructures’ business continuity indicators related to climate-weather change process are defined under assumption about renovation with non-ignored time. Finally, the Port Critical Infrastructure (PCI) is defined. The business availability indicators are applied and calculated for data from experts and under academic assumptions for PCI.

The main aim of the paper is to present the possibility of use of the multi-criteria optimization method Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to liquid cargo transportation by sea. Finding the optimal solution is not simple. There are many factors influencing the shipping process. In the case of liquid cargo, the most important thing is the safety of the crew, ship, and environment. Therefore, the Mathematical Theory of Evidence is introduced and used to determine the optimal path in terms of time and safety of transport. Moreover, the details of liquid cargo transport process are described with particular attention to ship to ship operations. Besides, the basic concept of the AHP method, steps of the algorithm are introduced. Finally, the multicriteria optimization of the transport of the liquid cargo from the Persian Gulf to Port of Gdansk is done. It is based on the experts′ opinions.

Modelling Environment and Infrastructure Influence on Reliability and Operation Processes of Port Transportation SystemsIn the paper a probabilistic model of industrial systems environment and infrastructure influence on their operation processes is proposed. Semi-markov processes are used to construct a general model of complex industrial systems' operation processes. Main characteristics of this model are determined as well. In particular case, for a port grain transportation system, its operation states are defined, the relationships between them are fixed and particular model of its operation process is constructed and its main characteristics are determined. The joint model of the system operation process and the system reliability is constructed and applied to the reliability evaluation of port grain transportation system.
