Although highly desirable, the experimental technology of the dynamic mechanical properties of materials under multiaxial impact loading is rarely explored. In this study, a true-biaxial split Hopkinson pressure bar device is developed to achieve the biaxial synchronous impact loading of a specimen. A symmetrical wedge-shaped, dual-wave bar is designed to decompose a single stress wave into two independent and symmetric stress waves that eventually form an orthogonal system and load the specimen synchronously. Furthermore, a combination of ground gaskets and lubricant is employed to eliminate the shear stress wave and separate the coupling of the shear and axial stress waves propagating in bars. Some confirmatory and applied tests are carried out, and the results show not only the feasibility of this modified device but also the dynamic mechanical characteristics of specimens under biaxial impact loading. This novel technique is readily implementable and also has good application potential in material mechanics testing.

A damped outrigger system (DO) has been proposed to enhance the seismic performance, in which links between outriggers and perimeter columns are artificially disconnected and implemented by dampers. Such an operation essentially destroys the structural integrity and becomes a potential threat for structural safety. Moreover, its performance is very sensitive to the stiffness of perimeter columns. In this study, a mega-sub controlled system is employed to propose a novel outrigger system, i.e., a damped substructure outrigger system (DSO). The novel system has good structural integrity due to its main structure consisting of the core tube, outrigger, and perimeter column. To present further investigation, the govern equations of DSO are derived by the simplified model which is regard as a cantilever beam system with a multirotation spring and energy dissipation substructure. Then, the energy distribution and seismic performance are parametric investigated. Finally, the damping effects of DSO are discussed. The results indicate that DSO possesses the superiority of damping performance. Compared with DO, DSO is less sensitive to perimeter column stiffness. Moreover, the proposed system can obtain the high efficiency in energy dissipation but with less damping cost than that of the viscous damper. Also, the larger stroke of the viscous damper can be found for DSO.

Although the dynamic response of orthotropic materials under uniaxial impact loading has been extensively studied, their behavior under multiaxial stress states, which more accurately represent real-world blast and impact scenarios, has received limited attention. To address this gap, this study employed a self-developed biaxial impact testing apparatus to systematically investigate the dynamic mechanical behavior of beech wood, a typical orthotropic material, under three biaxial loading configurations: radial-tangential, radial-longitudinal, and tangential-longitudinal. By combining theoretical derivation with experimental data, it systematically examines stress wave propagation characteristics, strain rate effects, and anisotropy evolution under different loading paths. The results reveal that beech wood exhibits significantly distinct dynamic responses along different material orientations, with a consistent strength hierarchy: longitudinal > radial > tangential. Biaxial loading notably enhances the equivalent stress–strain response and alters the deformation mechanisms and energy absorption behavior. Furthermore, lateral confinement and multiaxial stress coupling are identified as critical factors influencing the dynamic performance. This study provides the first systematic revelation of the strain rate strengthening mechanisms and wave propagation characteristics of orthotropic materials from the perspective of multiaxial dynamic loading, thereby offering theoretical and experimental foundations for developing advanced dynamic constitutive models suitable for complex impact conditions. These findings provide important guidance for the design and evaluation of lightweight impact-resistant structures in fields such as aerospace and protective engineering.
