Achieving a model which accurately diagnoses faults in electric machines is a vital step in data-driven fault detection approaches. To this aim, this article proposes a long short-term memory regulated deep residual network for data-driven fault diagnosis purposes in electric machines. The advantages of the proposed network are that it is more general in terms of fault type and measurement, results in a more accurate model for fault classification, and has faster convergence compared with other networks, such as conventional deep residual networks. In order to prove these advantages of the proposed network, it is evaluated by two different types of datasets. One is the inter-turn short circuit fault in a permanent magnet synchronous motor with the data of measured three-phase current. The second one is the Case Western Reverse University bearing fault dataset with the vibration measurements. The performance of the network is also compared with other networks. Results reveal that the model can accurately detect both types of faults by two different measurements with a test accuracy of 100%. Furthermore, it converges faster than other networks in the training procedure.

In various applications, the reliable and efficient detection of faults in electric machines is crucial, particularly in environments with high noise levels. To this end, the current study introduces an effective fault detection model utilizing the differential of Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and a channel-wise regulated Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The novel use of the differential of STFT is presented to enhance the diagnostic model's performance in noisy conditions compared with the conventional STFT. According to the inherent time-frequency domain information within the differential of STFT, a regulated CNN-based model is proposed to integrate spatio-temporal information into the feature map, thereby enhancing accuracy and reducing the computational demand. The method is evaluated on three datasets: the widely used Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) benchmark featuring bearing fault and vibration measurements, a dataset involving Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) data with varying levels of Inter-Turn Short-Circuit (ITSC) fault and current measurements, and a dataset consisting of a mixture of mechanical and electrical faults. Comparative analysis highlights the superior performance of the proposed model over existing robust methods in the literature under both normal and noisy conditions. This paper proposes a two-stage optimization algorithm to effectively determine the system configuration at one stage, as well as the capacity of components at the other stage in the middle of the former. This algorithm fits in best with the hybrid systems with more possible types of components. The studied system, in this paper, includes diesel generators, wind turbines, photovoltaic arrays, and tidal generators as the power generation components, as well as battery banks and flywheels as the energy storage components. It also includes fuel cells and electrolyzers that either work like batteries or generate electricity in the presence of biomass. When the number of components (decision variables) increase, it becomes difficult to find an optimal solution by the conventional methods. Therefore, in this study, a two-stage multi-objective optimization algorithm is applied to design a cost-effective and environmental-friendly AC mini-grid hybrid power system. In each iteration of the proposed algorithm, first, renewable energy sources and energy storage components are selected to form a hybrid power system along with the diesel generator. Then, the capacities of the components are optimized based on the two objective functions, including levelized cost of electricity and emissions. The optimization model uses real annual data in hourly time intervals for the load, solar insolation, ambient temperature, and wind speed. It is found that the proposed algorithm decreases the susceptibility of the solutions to multiple runs compared to conventional algorithms and achieves a better optimized power system design.

In order to maintain continuous production and to avoid the maintenance cost increment in power plants, it is important to monitor the condition of equipment, especially the generator. Regarding the impossibility of direct access to rotating diodes in brushless synchronous generators, the condition monitoring of these elements is very important. Here, a novel fault detection method is proposed for the diode rectifier of brushless synchronous generator. At the first stage of this method, the vibration signals are recorded and feature extraction is performed by calculating the relative energy of discrete wavelet transform components. Multiclass support vector machine (MSVM) is used for classification, and the best mother wavelet and number of decomposition level are chosen based on classification performance. To enhance the performance of the classification, a modified sequential forward subset selection approach is included by which the best statistical features are selected. In this approach, besides selecting the best subset of statistical features, the classification parameter is tuned according to the selected subset to achieve the best performance. The result of the proposed method is eventually compared with those results of classification performance using conventional subset selection. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect rectifier faults effectively.
The most electrical energy in the world is produced by synchronous generators. Therefore, it has always been important to condition monitor the power generators. One of key parts of the brushless synchronous generator is rectifier that is installed on the shaft of the generator which rotates in operational mode. As a result, it is difficult to access the rectifier for condition monitoring. In this paper, a method is proposed to detect the occurred faults on the rectifier using three-phase terminal voltage of the brushless synchronous generator. In order to evaluate the method, the open-circuit fault on one diode and the open-circuit fault on two diodes which leads to opening one phase of the armature winding in exciter generator are detected in an experimental set. In the method, the relative wavelet energy along with some statistical features of the measured signals are extracted. Besides, K Nearest Neighbors (KNN) is used for fault classification.
