José Pérez-Rigueiro is a Professor of Materials Science in the Materials Science Department of the Civil Engineering School in Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and Researcher in the Centro de Tecnología Biomédica in the same institution. He completed his PhD in Physics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where he also obtained a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He has been responsible for numerous courses within the field of Biomaterials, including “Soft Matter”, “Biomimetics”, and “Tissue Engineering” in the Bachelor Degrees in Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, and Materials Engineering at UPM. His research work is mainly focused on the mechanical and microstructural characterization of silkworm and spider silk, including their applications as biomaterials, and in the modulation of the response of the organism to an implant through the biofunctionalization of its surface. He is the author of the book “Biological Materials and Biomaterials”.
