Covalent crystals such as diamonds are a class of fascinating materials that are challenging to fabricate in the form of thin films. This is because spatial kinetic control of bond formation is required to create covalently bonded crystal films. Directional crystal growth is commonly achieved by chemical vapor deposition, an approach that is hampered by technical complexity and associated high cost. Here we report on a liquid-liquid interfacial approach based on physical-organic considerations to synthesize an ultrathin covalent crystal film. By distributing reactants into separate phases using hydrophobicity, the chemical reaction is confined to an interface that orients the crystal growth. A molecular-smooth interface combined with in-plane isotropic conditions enables the synthesis of films on a centimeter size scale with a uniform thickness of 13 nm. The film exhibits considerable mechanical robustness enabling a free-standing length of 37 µm, as well as a clearly anisotropic chemical structure and crystal lattice alignment.

This paper analyzes the structural, energetic and mechanical properties of carbon dioxide hydrate clathrates calculated using finite cluster and periodic ab initio density-functional theory methodologies. Intermolecular interactions are described by the exchange-hole dipole moment method. The stability, gas saturation energetics, guest–host interactions, cage deformations, vibrational frequencies, and equation of state parameters for the low-pressure sI cubic phase of the CO2@H2O clathrate hydrate are presented. Our results reveal that: (i) the gas saturation process energetically favors complete filling; (ii) carbon dioxide molecules prefer to occupy the larger of the two cages in the sI structure; (iii) blue shifts occur in both the symmetric and antisymmetric stretching frequencies of CO2 upon encapsulation; and (iv) free rotation of guest molecules is restricted to a plane parallel to the hexagonal faces of the large cages. In addition, we calculate the librational frequency of the hindered rotation of the guest molecule in the plane perpendicular to the hexagonal faces. Our calculated spectroscopic data can be used as signatures for the detection of clathrate hydrates in planetary environments.

Using Lifshitz theory, we assess the role of van der Waals forces at interfaces of ice and water. The results are combined with measured structural forces from computer simulations to develop a quantitative model of the surface free energy of premelting films. This input is employed within the framework of wetting theory and allows us to predict qualitatively the behavior of quasi-liquid layer thickness as a function of ambient conditions. Our results emphasize the significance of vapor pressure. The ice–vapor interface is shown to exhibit only incomplete premelting, but the situation can shift to a state of complete surface melting above water saturation. The results obtained serve also to assess the role of subsurface freezing at the water–vapor interface, and we show that intermolecular forces favor subsurface ice nucleation only in conditions of water undersaturation. We show that ice regelation at ambient pressure may be explained as a process of capillary freezing, without the need to invoke the action of bulk pressure melting. Our results for van der Waals forces are exploited in order to gauge dispersion interactions in empirical point charge models of water.

We present the first results of K2-OjOS, a collaborative project between professional and amateur astronomers primarily aimed to detect, characterize, and validate new extrasolar planets. For this work, 10 amateur astronomers looked for planetary signals by visually inspecting the 20 427 light curves of K2 campaign 18 (C18). They found 42 planet candidates, of which 18 are new detections and 24 had been detected in the overlapping C5 by previous works. We used archival photometric and spectroscopic observations, as well as new high-spatial resolution images in order to carry out a complete analysis of the candidates found, including a homogeneous characterization of the host stars, transit modelling, search for transit timing variations and statistical validation. As a result, we report four new planets (K2-355 b, K2-356 b, K2-357 b, and K2-358 b) and 14 planet candidates. Besides, we refine the transit ephemeris of the previously published planets and candidates by modelling C5, C16 (when available) and C18 photometric data jointly, largely improving the period and mid-transit time precision. Regarding individual systems, we highlight the new planet K2-356 b and candidate EPIC 211537087.02 being near a 2:1 period commensurability, the detection of significant TTVs in the bright star K2-184 (V = 10.35), the location of K2-103 b inside the habitable zone according to optimistic models, the detection of a new single transit in the known system K2-274, and the disposition reassignment of K2-120 b, which we consider as a planet candidate as the origin of the signal cannot be ascertained.

The quasiharmonic approximation (QHA) in combination with density-functional theory is the main computational method used to calculate thermodynamic properties under arbitrary temperature and pressure conditions. QHA can predict thermodynamic phase diagrams, elastic properties and temperature- and pressure-dependent equilibrium geometries, all of which are important in various fields of knowledge. The main drawbacks of QHA are that it makes spurious predictions for the volume and other properties in the high temperature limit due to its approximate treatment of anharmonicity, and that it is unable to model dynamically stabilized structures. In this work, we propose an extension to QHA that fixes these problems. Our approach is based on four ingredients: (i) the calculation of the n-th order force constants using randomly displaced configurations and regularized regression, (ii) the calculation of temperature-dependent effective harmonic frequencies ω(V, T) within the self-consistent harmonic approximation (SCHA), (iii) Allen’s quasiparticle (QP) theory, which allows the calculation of the anharmonic entropy from the effective frequencies, and (iv) a simple Debye-like numerical model that enables the calculation of all other thermodynamic properties from the QP entropies. The proposed method is conceptually simple, with a computational complexity similar to QHA but requiring more supercell calculations. It allows incorporating anharmonic effects to any order. The predictions of the new method coincide with QHA in the low-temperature limit and eliminate the QHA blowout at high temperature, recovering the experimentally observed behavior of all thermodynamic properties tested. The performance of the new method is demonstrated by calculating the thermodynamic properties of geologically relevant minerals MgO and CaO. In addition, using cubic SrTiO3 as an example, we show that, unlike QHA, our method can also predict thermodynamic properties of dynamically stabilized phases. We expect this new method to be an important tool in geochemistry and materials discovery.
