Uncertain provenance and tectonic setting of shale has constrained the exploration and exploitation of natural gas in the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation in the southern Sichuan Basin, China. Therefore, this study analyzed the mineral petrology and geochemistry to assess the effects of sorting, recycling, weathering, and paleoclimate on the deeply buried shale. The findings revealed that the mineral composition is dominated by biogenic quartz, terrigenous clay minerals, and carbonate minerals. Combinations of clay lamina and silty lamina occur in black shale. The geochemical characteristics of these sedimentary rocks remain unaffected by sedimentary sorting and recycling processes. The clastic sediments primarily originate from the felsic igneous rock source that underwent moderate weathering during its initial deposition in the collision environment. Based on the comprehensive analysis of the paleoclimate and paleoprovenance characteristics, Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation characteristics are considered to have undergone six stages, among which the stage of relative enrichment of organic matter corresponds to LM1, LM2–3, and LM4. Following the Hirnantian glacial period, the era has witnessed global warming, marked by glacier melting, a rise in global sea level, and a decrease in terrestrial debris supply, collectively facilitating organic matter enrichment. During the LM5 and LM6–8 periods, the increase in source supply caused by the Leshan–Longnvsi and Qianzhong–Xuefeng uplift inhibited organic matter enrichment.

The effect of clay minerals on the methane adsorption capacity of shales is a basic issue that needs to be clarified and is of great significance for understanding the adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of shale gas. In this study, a variety of experimental methods, including XRD, LTNA, HPMA experiments, were conducted on 82 marine shale samples from the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation of 10 evaluation wells in the southern Sichuan Basin of China. The controlling factors of adsorption capacities were determined through a correlation analysis with pore characteristics and mineral composition. In terms of mineral composition, organic matter (OM) is the most key methane adsorbent in marine shale, and clay minerals have little effect on methane adsorption. The ultra-low adsorption capacity of illite and chlorite and the hydrophilicity and water absorption ability of clay minerals are the main reasons for their limited effect on gas adsorption in marine shales. From the perspective of the pore structure, the micropore and mesopore specific surface areas (SSAs) control the methane adsorption capacity of marine shales, which are mainly provided by OM. Clay minerals have no relationship with SSAs, regardless of mesopores or micropores. In the competitive adsorption process of OM and clay minerals, OM has an absolute advantage. Clay minerals become carriers for water absorption, due to their interlayer polarity and water wettability. Based on the analysis of a large number of experimental datasets, this study clarified the key problem of whether clay minerals in marine shales control methane adsorption.

Organic matter exhibits significant heterogeneity and complexity, with varying pore structures across different types influenced by multiple interacting factors. This paper introduces a “two categories, six subcategories” classification scheme based on morphological observations using a combination of argon ion polishing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Organic matter is classified into two main categories: depositional organic matter and migrated organic matter, based on whether migration has occurred. Depositional organic matter is further subdivided into three types based on microscopic characteristics: bioclasts, compacted kerogen, and in situ remnants from post-hydrocarbon generation. Migrated organic matter is categorized into three types: organic matter in intragranular pores, organic matter in intergranular pores, and bitumen in microfractures. Bioclasts can be further classified into alginite, zooclasts, acritarchs, and encapsulated organic matter based on maceral type. Zooclasts, acritarchs, encapsulated organic matter, and compacted kerogen—types of depositional organic matter—have few or no pores. This is primarily related to the nature of the hydrocarbon-generating precursor materials, with compacted kerogen being influenced by low thermal maturity and diagenetic compaction. In contrast, pores are more developed in alginite, in situ remnants from post-hydrocarbon generation, and all forms of migrated organic matter, largely due to the expulsion of gaseous hydrocarbons during thermal evolution. The pores in alginite reflect both the original structural properties of the hydrocarbon-generating precursor materials and the thermal evolution process. Depositional organic matter exhibits a stronger oil-generating potential and a higher gas-generating potential, while migrated organic matter primarily possesses a stronger gas-generating capability. Specifically, organic matter enriched in alginite, in situ remnants from post-hydrocarbon generation, as well as migrated organic matter in intragranular pore and intergranular pore, exhibit a higher hydrocarbon-generation potential.

The gas loss time during the deep coalbed coring process is long. The measured desorption curve does not meet the application conditions for the classical United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) method. However, the industry still lacks a reliable interpretation method, which affects identifying deep coalbed methane reserves and optimizing sweet spots. (Method) The classical double-porosity and double-permeability theoretical model was adopted, and the influence of reservoir permeability, water saturation, and temperature on gas output in the coalbed desorption process was considered. Based on the measured field desorption data of the P1 sample of the No. 8 coal in the Benxi Formation on the eastern margin of Ordos, the entire process for the deep coalbed gas content test was numerically simulated. (Results) The simulation results show that the lost gas in the P1 sample accounts for 24.7% of the total gas, reaching 8.64 m3/t, including 18.81% of loss in wellbore lifting and 5.88% of loss during surface exposure. The total gas content of the sample is 35.34 m3/t. The P1 sample contains free gas, with a content of 9.71 m3/t, and the ratio between adsorbed and free gas is close to 7:3. Matrix permeability, initial gas saturation, and lifting time are the key factors that determine the amount of lost gas. The results of deep coalbed gas loss calculated by the USBM method were excessively large, approximately twice that calculated using the new method. The total gas content calculated based on multiple parameters is consistent with the interpretation results of the new method, with an average error of approximately 7%. (Conclusion) The interpretation method of gas loss in deep coalbeds has acceptable reliability and can be applied in shale gas content testing.

The pore types and pore structure parameters of the heterogenetic shale will affect the percolation and reservoir properties of shale; therefore, the research on these parameters is very important for shale reservoir evaluation. We used X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), low-pressure CO2 adsorption analysis, mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP), and high-pressure methane adsorption analysis to analyze the characteristics of different pore types and their parameters of the Lower Permian Shanxi Formation and Taiyuan Formation in the Ordos Basin. The influence of different mineral contents on the porosity and pore size is also investigated. The Shanxi Formation (SF) is composed of quartz (average of 38.4), plagioclase, siderite, Fe-dolomite, calcite, pyrite, and clay minerals (average of 50.1), while the Taiyuan Formation (TF) is composed of calcite (average of 37), siderite, Fe-dolomite, quartz, pyrite, and clay minerals (average of 32.3). The most common types of pores observed in this formation are interparticle pores (InterP pores), intraparticle pores (IntraP pores), interclay pores, intercrystalline pores (InterC pores), organic matter pores (OM pores), and microfractures. CO2 adsorption analysis demonstrates the type I physisorption isotherms, showing microporous solids having comparatively small external surfaces. The similar types of isothermal shapes of the Shanxi Formation (SF) and Taiyuan Formation (TF) suggest that both types have similar pore size distribution (PSD) within the measured pore range by the low-pressure CO2 adsorption experiment. The micropore pore size of the TF is larger than that of the SF. MICP shows the larger pores (50nm), and most of the volume was adsorbed by macropores. Methane gas sorption capacity increases with increasing pressure. Clay minerals and quartz played an important role in providing adsorption sites for methane gas. The overall analysis of both formations shows that TF has good reservoir properties than SF.
