Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a natural hard tissue constituent widely used for bone and tooth replacement engineering. In the present work, synthetic HAp was obtained from calcium nitrate tetrahydrate (Ca(NO3)2·4H2O) and ammonium phosphate dibasic (NH4)2HPO4 following an optimized microwave assisted hydrothermal method. The effect of pH was evaluated by the addition of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH). Hence, different characterization techniques were used to determine its influence on the resulted HAp powders’ size, shape, and crystallinity. By Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), it was observed that the reaction pH environment modifies the morphology of HAp, and a shape evolution, from sub-hedral particles at pH = 7 to rod-like nanosized HAp at pH = 10, was confirmed. Using the X-ray Diffraction (XRD) technique, the characteristic diffraction peaks of the monoclinic phase were identified. Even if the performed Rietveld analysis indicated the presence of both phases (hexagonal and monoclinic), monoclinic HAp prevails in 95% with an average crystallite size of about 23 nm. The infrared spectra (FTIR) showed absorption bands at 3468 cm−1 and 630 cm−1 associated with OH− of hydroxyapatite, and bands at 584 cm−1, 960 cm−1, and 1090 cm−1 that correspond to the PO4 3− and CO3 2− characteristic groups. In summary, this work contributes to obtaining nanosized rod-like monoclinic HAp by a simple and soft method that has not been previously reported.

Summary. In the present work, a study of H+ effects on the microstructure and morphology of hydroxyapatite synthesized by the hydrothermal method is reported. The synthesis was realized with pH values of 10, 9.6, 9, 8, and 7. To know the particle size distribution, growth habit, chemical composition, and crystalline phases present, SEM-EDS, XRD, AFM, and FTIR spectroscopy techniques were used and completed with Rietveld analysis. The obtained results showed an important effect of H+ on the morphological and crystallographic characteristics of the hydroxyapatite, demonstrating that the shape and nanoparticle size, as well as the number of crystalline phases, can change depending on the pH during the synthesis. It was observed that there is an increase in the formation of the monoclinic phase and a decrease of the hexagonal phase when the pH value diminishes from 9.6 to 7. The crystallite size also decreases from 46.69 to 19.56 nm. An explanation of the role of pH on the final characteristics of the hydroxyapatite was related to the amount of H+ and OH- ions, and it was included in this work.

In this work reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was performed by modified Hummers method and thermal reduction process, modifying the thermal exposure times (2, 4, 6 and 8 h) and maintaining a constant temperature (200 °C). It was possible to observe the morphological and structural variation in all the samples. SEM analysis shows agglomerates with different dimensions (1–10 μm) in all the samples. The XRD analysis displays two characteristic peaks in graphene oxide (GO) samples, associated with (002) and (100) planes, corresponding to 10.57° and 42.20° in the 2-theta scale. The rGO samples show the increase in (002) plane associated with graphite (27° in 2-theta scale), proving the reduction process. FTIR analysis presents all the absorption bands for GO and rGO samples, showing the main functional groups like; hydroxyl, ketone, alkene, epoxy and carboxyl groups. Finally, Raman spectroscopy exhibits the vibrational characteristic modes of graphitic materials corresponding to D, G, and 2D bands, in which it is possible to differentiate between GO and rGO. Currently, the reduction processes use high temperatures, so it is necessary to reduce them with the commitment to obtain rGO of good quality and a considerable energy saving.

In this study, four samples of recycled aggregates from the construction and demolition waste of Mexico City were characterized in order to find innovative uses for these types of materials. Gravel and sand from a recycling plant were analyzed, as well as aggregates produced in the laboratory from demolished concrete collected from landfills. The characterization was carried out by means of XRD (X-ray Diffraction), chemical microanalysis (EDS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), pH measurement, and sieve analysis. The minerals present in the analyzed materials were feldspars, cristobalite and pyroxene, which corresponded to the natural aggregates, as well as variable amounts of calcite, a product of the carbonation of the cement paste adhered to these aggregates, and in a smaller proportion, calcium hemicarboaluminate, rosenhanite, and tobermorite. The quality (amount of cement) of the original concrete has a great influence on the granulometry and the chemical–mineralogical composition of the aggregates, since there will be different quantities and qualities of the cement paste adhered to the aggregates depending on their size. Finally, the pH values measured in all samples fluctuated between 10.15 and 12.08, suggesting that these materials can be used in soil stabilization or in agricultural applications.

This work shows the preliminary description of the origin of a sedimentary - exhalative outcrop of Jurassic Lower Pliensbachian. The location of this deposit was achieved by applying an examination based in the identification of sedimentary transgressions of heterochronies ages and the identification of a Rift – type mega –structure. According with the methodology, it was carried out a study of the discordant relationships between two types of sediments: continental and marine. According the characterization, it was noted the existence of light rare earths, in values that show positive anomalies in comparison with the distribution of elements in upper continental crust according to the Clarke [1], reflecting so a felsic affinity of the mineral deposit. Also, positive anomalies of platinum and Pd, were determined with marginal contents of Au and Ag; and finally the base metals Zn, Pb and Cu were detected in low contents, which could be due to the presence of altered shale. According to the sedimentary lithology found, which was of siliciclastic type; to the exhalative roots observed during the fieldwork; the presence of quartz minerals such as biotite and muscovite; the presence of minerals of hydrothermal remobilization like chalcopyrite with some base metals, altered shale, as well as sulfur deficiency; this mineral reservoir could be defined as a SEDEX – type.

This work shows the physicochemical behavior of two different diatoms from the country of Mexico (State of Jalisco and Hidalgo) with similar compositions. These were used to eliminate toxic cations from a synthetic solution containing 5.270 mg As3+/L; 4.280 mg Ag+/L; 3.950 mgNi2+/L; 4.090 mg Cr6+/L; and 4.081 mg Pb2+/L. These diatoms were used as filters, and the quantity of cations remaining in the solution after filtering was measured. According to the most important results found, for the recovery of metals, both minerals achieved arsenic, silver, lead, and nickel recoveries up to 95%, and lower than 10% for chromium. This could be due to the absence of an environment to reduce Cr6+ to Cr3+. On the other hand, it was observed that there was no selectivity during the recovery of the other cations present in the solution. According to efficiency of interchange, the mineral from Hidalgo is slightly better than the mineral from Jalisco for the removal of arsenic, lead, and silver. For nickel, and particularly Cr6+, the efficiency is higher for the sample from Jalisco.

We report potentiodynamic studies to characterize copper, nickel and zinc leaching solutions from electronic waste. The metals were leached using oxygen and sulfuric acid (pH = 1.5). As is known, reduction potentials are determined using thermodynamics laws, and metal recovery strategies from electronic waste are usually considered according these thermodynamic values. Pourbaix‐type diagrams are not appropriate to plan strategies in electrochemical processing. Therefore, knowledge of electrode potentials for the metal deposit/dissolution process is the basis for the selective recovery planning. For this reason, potentiodynamic studies, specifically cyclic voltammetry, are revealed as a good way to decide the best conditions for the process of electrochemical recovery of metals from electronic waste, which is also cost‐efficient and has no interference from strange ions, such as lead, in this case.

Oligo(phenylimines) hereafter named PI6, PI8 and PI9 were synthesized by condensation reaction between the terephtalaldehyde and diamines of different length size (diaminohexane, diaminooctane and diaminononane) via mechanochemistry. The reactions were carried out without solvent or catalyst and completed after only 90 minutes. The products were characterized by 1H-NMR, UV-Vis, FT-IR spectroscopy, GPC, DSC and Small angle X-ray diffraction. Thin films were prepared by spin coating from concentrated solutions on glass and quartz substrates and mechanically rubbed with a polyacrylonitrile tissue. The oriented films were studied by both Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (LSCM) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. With this last technique, the higher optical dichroism was observed for PI6. The oriented films of this oligo(phenylimine) were thus used as patterns to induce molecular orientation of a fluorescent phenyleneethynylene polymer in order to obtain polarized light emission.

Novel fluorescent dendrimers of first, second, and third generation bearing a conjugated oligo(phenylenevinylene) (OPV) core and peripherial allyl chains as dendrons have been synthesized by a convergent method. The compounds have been fully characterized by 1H, 13C NMR, FTIR, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy, MALDI-TOF or FAB+ mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis. All dendrimers showed in solution a blue fluorescence with a maximum wavelength at 444-446 nm and can be deposited as thin films emitting in the blue-green region. The most homogeneous films were obtained for the second generation dendrimer which also exhibits the higher quantum yield in solution. These properties make it a possible candidate for application in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Thin anodie oxides (5-10 μm) were formed on n-GaSb (100) substrates by electrochemical method under galvanostatic regime employing an aqueous solution (citric acid/hydrogen peroxide), at volume ratio of 5:1, changing the time of growth. The thickness and index of refraction, thermal diffusivity and quality of passivated films were obtained by IR reflectance spectroscopy, photoacoustic spectroscopy and finally photoluminescence spectroscopy.
