A Gram-stain-positive, moderately halophilic, motile, strictly aerobic, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, strain MY11T, was isolated from a sediment sample collected from the Western Pacific. This isolate grew in the presence of 0.5–18 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 6.0–10.0 and 15–45 °C; optimum growth was observed with 3.5 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 8.0–9.0 and 35–37 °C. Strain MY11Thad menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the predominant respiratory quinone and anteiso-C15 : 0and anteiso-C17 : 0as major fatty acids. Major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C content was 34.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences confirmed that strain MY11Twas a member of the genus Virgibacillus , exhibiting sequence similarities of 95.3–97.6 % to the type strains of recognized Virgibacillus species. Strain MY11Tcould be differentiated from recognized species of the genus Virgibacillus based on phenotypic characteristics, chemotaxonomic differences, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization data. On the basis of the data presented, strain MY11Tis considered to represent a novel species of the genus Virgibacillus , for which the nameVirgibacillus oceanisp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MY11T( = LMG 28105T = CGMCC 1.12754T = MCCC 1A09973T).

A novel Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile actinobacterium, designated GY0556T, was isolated from deep-sea sediment collected from the western Pacific Ocean at a depth of 7118 m. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that this strain belongs to the genus Pseudonocardia , being most closely related to Pseudonocardia hydrocarbonoxydans IMSNU 22140T (97.6 % similarity), Pseudonocardia sulfidoxydans DSM 44248T (97.6 %) and Pseudonocardia alaniniphila Y-16303T (97.6 %); similarity to other type strains of the genus Pseudonocardia was less than 97.5 %. Strain GY0556T contained MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C16 : 0 and iso H-C16 : 1 as the major fatty acids. The polar lipids detected in strain GY0556T were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, one unknown glycolipid, one unknown phospholipid and two unknown lipids. The whole organism hydrolysates mainly consisted of meso-diaminopimelic acid, xylose, galactose and arabinose. The DNA G+C content of strain GY0556T was 76.9 mol%. The results of DNA–DNA hybridizations and phylogenetic analysis, together with the phenotypic and biochemical tests, allowed the differentiation of strain GY0556T from established members of the genus Pseudonocardia . Therefore, it is proposed that strain GY0556T represents a novel species of the genus Pseudonocardia , for which the name Pseudonocardia profundimaris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GY0556T (=MCCC 1A10574T=KCTC 39641T).

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, motile and non-spore-forming actinobacteria, designated strain F10T, was isolated from a deep-sea sediment of the western Pacific Ocean. Phylogenetic and phenotypic properties of the organism supported that it belonged to the genus Nesterenkonia . Strain F10Tshared highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.8 % with Nesterenkonia aethiopica DSM 17733T, followed by Nesterenkonia xinjiangensis YIM 70097T(96.7 %) and Nesterenkonia alba CAAS 252T(96.6 %). The organism grew at 4–50 °C, at pH 7.0–12.0 and in the presence of 0–12 % (w/v) NaCl, with optimal growth occurring at 40 °C, at pH 9.0 and in the presence of 1 % (w/v) NaCl. The peptidoglycan type was A4(alpha),l-Lys–Gly–l-Glu. The polar lipid profile of strain F10Tconsisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, two unknown glycolipids and two unknown lipids. The isolate contained MK-9 (92 %) and MK-8 (5.8 %) as the major components of the menaquinone system, and anteiso-C17 : 0(50.9 %) and anteiso-C15 : 0(29.8 %) as the predominant fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain F10Twas 66.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic analyses, strain F10Trepresents a novel species of the genus Nesterenkonia for which the nameNesterenkonia alkaliphilasp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is F10T( = LMG 28112T = CGMCC 1.12781T = JCM 19766T = MCCC 1A09946T).

Marine actinobacteria continue to be a rich source for the discovery of structurally diverse secondary metabolites. Here we present a new hydroxymate siderophore produced by Amycolatopsis albispora, a recently described species of this less explored actinomycete genus. Strain WP1T was isolated from sediments collected at −2945 m in the Indian Ocean. The new siderophore, designated albisporachelin, was isolated from iron depleted culture broths and the structure was established by 1D and 2D NMR and MS/MS experiments, and application of a modified Marfey’s method. Albisporachelin is composed of one N-methylated-formylated/hydroxylated l-ornithine (N-Me-fh-l-Orn), one l-serine (l-Ser), one formylated/hydroxylated l-ornithine (fh-l-Orn) and a cyclo-N-methylated-hydroxylated l-ornithine (cyclo-N-Me-h-l-Orn).

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic and non-motile strain, 0704P10-1T, was isolated from hydrothermal sediment of the Indian Ocean. Phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data for the organism supported that it belonged to the genus Janibacter . Strain 0704P10-1T showed 97.2–98.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to the type strains of recognized members of the genus Janibacter . It contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell wall. MK-8(H4) was the only menaquinone detected. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c and 10-methyl C17 : 0. Meanwhile, the results of DNA–DNA hybridization studies and other physiological and biochemical tests allowed the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain 0704P10-1T from closely related species. Thus, strain 0704P10-1T represents a novel species of the genus Janibacter , for which the name Janibacter indicus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 0704P10-1T ( = LMG 27493T = CGMCC 1.12511T).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, strain 0704C9-2T, was isolated from hydrothermal sediment of the Indian Ocean. The organism grew with 0–5 % (w/v) NaCl and at 10–37 °C, with optimal growth occurring with 1 % NaCl and at 28–30 °C. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 0704C9-2T belonged to the genus Microbacterium . It exhibited highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Microbacterium testaceum DSM 20166T (98.4 %). Levels of similarity with the type strains of all other recognized species of the genus Microbacterium were less than 98.0 %. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments with strain 0704C9-2T and its closest relative, M. testaceum DSM 20166T, revealed a low reassociation value of 42.9 %. The DNA G+C content of strain 0704C9-2T was 73.3 mol%. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained ornithine and the acyl type was glycolyl. The major whole-cell sugars were mannose, galactose, rhamnose and glucose. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The predominant menaquinones were MK-11, MK-10 and MK-12. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, two unknown glycolipids and an unknown phospholipid. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain 0704C9-2T represents a novel species within the genus Microbacterium , for which the name Microbacterium hydrothermale sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 0704C9-2T ( = LMG 27542T = CGMCC 1.12512T).
