Crop residue returning (RR) is a promising option to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) storage, which is linked to crop yield promotion, ecologically sustainable agriculture, and climate change mitigation. Thus, the objectives of this study were to identify the responses of SOC storage and sequestration rates to RR in China’s croplands. Based on a national meta-analysis of 365 comparisons from 99 publications, the results indicated that RR increased SOC storage by 11.3% compared to residue removal (p < 0.05). Theoretically, when combined with low nitrogen fertilizer input rates (0–120 kg N ha−1), single cropping system, paddy-upland rotation, lower mean annual precipitation (0–500 mm), alkaline soils (pH 7.5–8.5), other methods of RR (including residue chopping, evenly incorporating, and burying) or long-term use (>10 yrs), an increase in SOC storage under RR by 11.6–15.5% could be obtained. The SOC sequestration rate of RR varied from 0.48 (Central China) to 1.61 (Southwest China) Mg C ha−1 yr−1, with a national average value of 0.93 Mg C ha−1 yr−1. Higher SOC sequestration rates enhanced crop production. However, decreases in SOC sequestration rate were observed with increases in experimental durations. The phenomenon of “C saturation” occurred after 23 yrs of RR. Overall, RR can be used as an efficient and environmentally friendly and climate-smart management practice for long-term use.

Metagenomic sequencing of the microbial soil community was used to assess the effect of various nitrogen fertilizer treatments in combination with constant rice straw return to the soil in the tiller layer of Northeast China’s black paddy soil used for rice production. Here, we investigated changes in the composition, diversity, and structure of soil microbial communities in the soil treated with four amounts of nitrogen fertilizers (53, 93, 133, and 173 kg/ha) applied to the soil under a constant straw return of 7500 kg/ha, with a control not receiving N. The relationships between soil microbial community structure and soil physical and chemical properties were determined. The results showed that the available K content of the soil significantly (p < 0.05) increased in soil receiving the lowest N-fertilizer dose. When applied at high amounts, N-fertilizer changed the Chao1 and ACE indices of the soil microorganisms (p < 0.05), and the treatments resulted in significant differences in the β-diversity of the soil microorganisms. By NMDS analysis it was demonstrated that the treatment significantly affected the structure of the soil microbial communities. Redundancy analysis showed that the main physicochemical drivers behind these differences were total nitrogen, total potassium, ammonium nitrogen, total phosphorus, and available potassium. The soil microbial communities in the control treatment were negatively correlated with nitrate and ammonium nitrogen; the lowest N-fertilizer treatment produced positive correlations with total nitrogen, total potassium, and total phosphorus and negative correlations with ammonium nitrogen; the highest dose negatively correlated with total nitrogen, available potassium, available phosphorus, total phosphorus, and pH. This study showed that moderate N fertilizer application is an effective way to increase soil microbial diversity and improve soil quality. This experiment provides technical support for the application of the alternative fertilizer technology of straw return to the field and provides a theoretical basis for rational fertilization of paddy fields in a cold climate.

Increased rice production, which benefitted from cropping areas expansion and continuous N applications, resulted in severe increases in greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions from 1983 to 2019 in Heilongjiang Province, China. Therefore, field trials were performed in the high-cold Harbin region, Northeast China, to determine the efficiency of incorporating water regimes with N fertilization in minimizing the impact of rice production on GHG emissions. Two water-saving irrigation strategies, intermittent irrigation (W1) and control irrigation (W2), were used relative to continuous flooding (W0), and we combined them with six fertilized treatments. Our results demonstrated that W1 and W2 significantly decreased seasonal CH4 emissions by 19.7–30.0% and 11.4–29.9%, enhanced seasonal N2O emissions by 77.0–127.0% and 16.2–42.4%, and increased significantly yields by 5.9–12.7% and 0–4.7%, respectively, compared with W0. Although trade-offs occurred between CH4 and N2O emissions, W1 and W2 resulted in significant reductions in global warming potential (GWP). Moreover, low N rates (<120 kg N ha−1) performed better in GWP than high N rates. N fertilization and irrigation regimes had remarkable effects on rice yields and GWP. In conclusion, the incorporation of W1 and a N application under 120 kg N ha−1 could simultaneously mitigate GWP while enhancing production in black soils in high-cold Northeast China.

Salt damage is an important abiotic stress affecting the agronomic traits of soybean. Soybeans rapidly sense and transmit adverse signals when salt-damaged, inducing a set of response mechanisms to resist salt stress. AtARA6 encodes a small GTPase, which plays an important role in Arabidopsis vesicle transport and salt tolerance. In this study, we transformed the Arabidopsis gene AtARA6 into the cultivated soybean Shen Nong 9 (SN9). To investigate the salt tolerance pathways affected by AtARA6 in soybean, we performed transcriptome sequencing using transgenic soybean and wild-type (SN9) under salt treatment and water treatment. Our results suggest that AtARA6 is involved in the regulation of soybean SNARE complexes in the vesicle transport pathway, which may directly strengthen salt tolerance. In addition, we comprehensively analyzed the RNA-seq data of transgenic soybean and SN9 under different treatments and obtained 935 DEGs. GO analysis showed that these DEGs were significantly enriched in transcription factor activity, sequence-specific DNA binding, and the inositol catabolic process. Three salt-responsive negative regulator transcription factors, namely MYC2, WRKY6, and WRKY86, were found to be significantly downregulated after salt treatment in transgenic soybeans. Moreover, four genes encoding inositol oxygenase were significantly enriched in the inositol catabolic process pathway, which could improve the salt tolerance of transgenic soybeans by reducing their reactive oxygen species content. These are unique salt tolerance effects produced by transgenic soybeans. Our results provide basic insights into the function of AtARA6 in soybeans and its role in abiotic stress processes in plants.

Salinization poses a critical threat to global crop production, affecting approximately 15% of irrigated land and substantially reducing yields. Therefore, enhancing crop salt tolerance has become extremely urgent. Notably, identifying and utilizing salt-related genes is fundamental to salt tolerance breeding. Rice ( Oryza sativa ) is an important crop and a staple food worldwide, especially in Asia. However, most cultivated varieties are sensitive to salt stress. Therefore, identifying and applying salt-related genes could facilitate breeding of salt-tolerant varieties. In this study, 265 salt-related QTLs were obtained from the Gramene database and subjected to overview and collinearity analyses. Notably, the QTLs were concentrated on chromosome (Chr) 9, within 12.79–15.29 Mb in the overview analysis and 14.80–18.68 Mb in the collinearity analysis. Additionally, 65 meta-QTLs (MQTLs) were identified through meta-analysis. The candidate interval for MQTL9.4 was 5.2 Mb. Integrating the three analyses, a candidate region associated with salt tolerance was defined on Chr 9, at 14.85–15.21 Mb. A total of 36 genes were identified within this region. Screening based on predicted molecular function, expression profiles across different tissues, and responses to salt stress revealed the candidate gene Os09g0416200 , designated OsMOCSalt . This gene had two haplotypes, and OsMOCSalt Hap1 was confirmed to positively regulate salt tolerance in transgenic yeast. Additionally, molecular markers associated with the polymorphic sites were developed, and a specific single nucleotide polymorphism was found to be significantly correlated with salt tolerance ( P < 0.05 ). This study identified and validated a salt tolerance-related gene, providing an empirical basis for the molecular breeding of salt-tolerant rice.
