Darrieus wind rotor is a vertical axis wind turbine that is a very promising kind of wind converters at remote and domestic locations that have soft and weak wind potential and speed, but from the quantitative comparison with horizontal axis wind turbines, this type of turbines has a weak performance. Additional researches are still needed to develop its efficiency to identify all the requirements of the generated power in low power demands. The aim of the current investigation is to analyze all the acting forces on the main parts of Darrieus rotor over the rotations as well as in maintenance and stationary conditions. Aerodynamic forces assessment will be executed for 3 different blade shapes (nonsymmetric and symmetric airfoils) like the airfoil section shapes of the Darrieus rotor blades. NACA 0021, LS413, and S1046 are selected as cross-sectional profile in this work. CFD simulations have been used in this work to get the different aerodynamic forces on the rotor blades of the Darrieus turbines. The present results indicated that the symmetric S1046 blade has higher forces during the rotation and stagnant (static) conditions. Moreover, the self-starting capability of NACA 0021 is better than S1046 due to low aerodynamic torsion on the S1046 blades.
The optimization of heat transfer in various engineering applications, such as thermal management systems and energy storage devices, remains a crucial challenge. This study aims to investigate the potential of Casson-based Cu-H2O nanofluids in enhancing free convection heat transfer within complex geometries. The research examines the free convection heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of a Casson-based Cu-H2O nanofluid within a semi-parabolic enclosure that includes a wavy corrugated cylinder. Utilizing numerical simulations based on the Galerkin Finite Element Method, the study investigates the impact of different factors, including the Rayleigh number (103 ≤ Ra ≤ 106), Casson fluid parameter (0.1 ≤ γ ≤ 1), corrugation number (3 ≤ N ≤ 10), nanoparticle volume fraction (0 ≤ ϕ ≤ 0.15), and enclosure inclination angle (0° ≤ ζ ≤ 60°), on both heat transfer efficiency and flow patterns. The results reveal that increasing the Rayleigh number and Casson fluid parameter enhances heat transfer performance, with the average Nusselt number increasing by up to 165 % as Ra increases from 103 to 106. An optimal range of corrugation numbers is identified for maximizing heat transfer at higher Rayleigh numbers. The addition of nanoparticles significantly improves heat transfer, with a 20 % increase in the average Nusselt number observed at Ra = 105 when the nanoparticle volume fraction increases from 0 to 0.15. These findings provide valuable insights for designing more efficient thermal management systems in applications such as electronics cooling, solar thermal collectors, and heat exchangers, potentially leading to improved energy efficiency and performance in various industrial and technological sectors.
The expansion of the open-pit exploitation of mineral raw materials, and especially the energy resources of fossil fuels, makes open-pit coal mines spatially dominant objects of large mining basins. Exploitation activities are accompanied by negative ecological impacts on the environment, which requires the integral planning, revitalization, reclamation, and rehabilitation of the disturbed area for human use in the post-exploitation period. The post-exploitation remediation and rehabilitation of open-pit mining areas and disposal sites, i.e., space disturbed by mining activities and accompanying facilities, are complex synthetic multidisciplinary multiphase engineering project tasks. In this paper, a hybrid fuzzy MCDM model (Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making) was developed for the selection of a reclamation solution for the Tamnava-West Field open-pit mine. IMF SWARA (Improved Fuzzy Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis) was applied to define the weights of 12 criteria of different structures used in the evaluation of reclamation solutions. The Fuzzy ROV (Range of Value) method was applied to select the reclamation solution from a total of 11 solutions previously obtained using a process approach. The results of the hybrid IMF SWARA—Fuzzy ROV model show that forestry is the best solution for the Tamnava-West Field open-pit mine. After the results had been obtained, verification analyses of the proposed model were performed and the best stable proposed reclamation solution was determined.
This work deals with a numerical investigation of a hydrodynamic–elastic problem within the framework of a double enclosure solar collector technological configuration. The solar collector presents two enclosures separated by an elastic absorber wall. The upper enclosure is filled with air, whereas the lower one is filled with Fe3O4/water nanofluid. The mathematical model governing the thermal and flow behaviors of the considered nanofluid is elaborated. The effects of imposed hot temperatures, the Rayleigh number and air pressure on the nanofluid’s temperature contours, velocity magnitude distribution, temperature evolution, velocity magnitude evolution and Nusselt number evolutions are numerically investigated. The numerical results show and assess how the increase in the Rayleigh number affects convective heat transfer at the expense of the conductive one, as well as how much the Nusselt number and the nanofluid velocity magnitude and temperature are affected in a function of the imposed hot temperature type (uniformly or right-triangular distributed on the elastic absorber wall). Moreover, the results evaluate how increases in the air pressure applied on the elastic absorber wall affects the nanofluid’s temperature distribution.
The combined heat and mass transfer phenomenon is a significant aspect of engineering and industrial processes. This phenomenon finds applications in various areas such as air conditioning, cooling and heating control of electronic devices, reactors, chemical systems, and emission processes. This research model focuses on the analysis of mixed convection flow of a viscous fluid with heat and mass transfer on an inclined surface with porous medium characteristics. The study also considers external heat transfer effects, radiation, Soret influence, and chemical reactions. A perturbation solution is derived in closed form, and the impact of various parameters on the thermal behavior is investigated. A comparative analysis of the heating and cooling regimes in plate flow is conducted, revealing a reduction in velocity in the heated plate regime with changes in the permeability parameter and an increase in concentration phase due to the Soret number.
This research article proposes a novel design of solar still; furthermore, it investigates, experimentally, its thermal and productivity performances, as well as its efficiency, under the realistic meteorological conditions of the city of Gafsa, Tunisia (34.4311° N, 8.7757° E), in terms of ambient temperature and solar irradiance. The novel proposed design presents a cylindrical solar still with a rotating transparent plastic (Plexiglass) cover, wiped continuously on the inner surface. A specific technological configuration of the evaporation and condensation compartments is elaborated. A real prototype is manufactured in order to carry out the performance experimental investigation. A performance comparison is carried out between the cylindrical transparent plastic cover rotating and it being fixed, for two experimentation days presenting slightly different meteorological conditions. The experimental water and plastic cover temperatures, the hourly and the cumulative water production, as well as the hourly efficiency are deeply quantified and interpreted.
