Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) carries a significant risk of gallbladder perforation and resulting scattering of bile stones into the abdominal cavity. The retrieval of the spilled stones is not always possible by laparoscopic technique. Most cases do not create long-term problems, although some cases may be complicated in future and create uncertainties regarding the correct diagnosis. Diagnosis can be difficult, and in most cases the patient may require open surgery for management of these complications. Herein, we report a case of acute abdomen due to spilled stones occurring 10 years after LC. In the first stage, definitive diagnosis could not be made with computed tomography examination. Finally, the patient was diagnosed with explorative laparotomy.

Aim: Acrylamide (ACR) is a water-soluble neurotoxic substance that has been widely researched in recent years. Boric acid (BA) is a component that does not have a toxic effect when taken at low concentrations and has a cystotoxic activity. Studies have reported that BA has antioxidant effects. In this study, we aimed to examine the protective efficacy of BA against the toxic damage that ACR may cause in the brain tissue. Material: In this study, 28 Wistar Albino male rats with an average weight of 320-400 grams were used. In our study, ACR was administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) at a dose of 50 mg/kg for 14 days, while BA was administered orally (p.o.) with a dose of 200 mg/kg for 14 days. Group 1 (n=7): It is the control group and no medication was administered for 14 days. Group 2 (n=7): ACR group, Group 3 (n=7): BA group and Group 4 (n=7): ACR + BA group. Results: The comparison between the groups in terms of serum Total Oxidant Status (TOS) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) analysis revealed that the highest MDA level was in the ACR group. The MDA and TOS levels of the ACR+BA group were significantly lower than the ACR group (p

Background: The aim of our study was to investigate the prognostic role of platelet/albumin ratio in patients treated under emergency conditions for peptic ulcer perforation (PUP). Methods: A retrospective study involving emergency patients who were operated for PUP was carried out. The patients were divided into 2 groups: PUP patients who died after surgical treatment (PUP-M) and PUP patients who survived after surgical treatment (PUP-S). The laboratory values of the patients were compared statistically. A P value of <.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: This cohort study consisted of 171 patients treated between June 2013 and December 2019. The mean age of the patients was 46.3 ± 20.5 years; and 33 (19.3%) patients were women. The age (P ≤ .001), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (P = .02), lactic dehydrogenase to albumin ratio (P ≤ .001), and platelet/albumin ratio (PAR; P ≤ .001) values were high and lymphocyte count was low (P = .006) in the PUP-M group. A positive correlation was determined between length of stay in hospital and age (P ≤ .001), lactic dehydrogenase/albumin ratio (P ≤ .001), platelet count (P = .044), and PAR (P ≤ .001). A substantial negative correlation was determined between length of stay in hospital and albumin count (P ≤ .001). Conclusions: We determined a high preoperative PAR level in PUP patients who had undergone surgery as a negative prognostic parameter. PAR is a candidate biomarker for clinical practice.

Ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) can cause significant functional impairments in cells and tissues depending on the duration of ischemia. To date, many alternative treatments have been utilized to address this damage. We aimed to research the protective efficacy of taxifolin (Tax), a natural antioxidant, against liver I/R injury in terms of biochemical, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical parameters. The rats utilized in our study were randomly chosen and divided into four equal groups. Group 1 (n = 7), sham group received 1 mL saline orally; group 2 (n = 7), Tax group; Group 3 (n = 7), I/R group; group 4 (n = 7), Tax + I/R group as designated. The entire study was performed under general anesthesia with protection of animal welfare. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were analyzed from blood samples. Proapoptotic (B-cell lymphoma 2 [Bcl-2]-associated X protein [Bax]) and antiapoptotic (Bcl-2) amendments in cells were reviewed. MDA grades were lower in the Tax+I/R group compared to the I/R group. Likewise, IL-6 grades were lower in the Tax + I/R group, histologic examinations showed that Bax proteins were less expressed in the Tax + IR group, and Bcl-2 proteins were intensely expressed in the Tax group. Taxifolin applied before liver I/R demonstrated favorable effects on inflammation, oxidative stress, and proapoptotic changes.

The swallowing of dentures during general anaesthesia is a significant problem for anesthesiologists. It is seen more often in patients with psychiatric disorders, mental retardation, alcoholism, or poor quality dentures. It has become an important issue for anesthesiologists preoperatively due to the increase in the proportion of dentures associated with prolongation of life. In elderly, the use of partial fixed prosthesis increases and the risk of swallowing dentures is increased. In this case report, it was presented that the denture was swallowed spontaneously before intubation while the patient was ventilated preoperatively.

Background: In obese subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the effect of laparoscopic greater curvature plication (LGCP) on the clinical improvement of T2DM is unknown. This study aims to investigate the effect of LGCP in improving the clinical profile of patients with T2DM. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study of obese subjects with T2DM who underwent LGCP between March 2011 and March 2013. Patients were followed up at different time periods. The efficacy of the procedure was investigated by using chi and t tests. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to investigate the predictors of excess weight loss (EWL). Results: Forty-three obese subjects (25 females, 18 males) with T2DM were enrolled. Mean age was 41.6 years. Preoperative mean ± SEM body–mass index (BMI) was 44.4 ± 0.8 kg/m2. Mean BMI decreased significantly at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months (p = 0.0002, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p < 0.001). Mean EWL was 20%, 32%, 42%, and 48% at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months of follow-up. At 1-year follow-up, a statistically significant decrease in mean serum fasting blood glucose (p = 0.001), HbA1c levels (p = 0.002), and Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) index (p < 0.0001) was observed. Female sex (p = 0.013) and HOMA index (p = 0.009) were found to be independent predictors of EWL. Conclusion: LGCP is a safe and effective bariatric procedure for the management of obesity. Our findings show that in addition to significant weight loss, LGCP may contribute to the clinical improvement of T2DM in obese subjects.
