The heterogeneity of a rock mass under high temperature and its thermo-mechanical coupling characteristics are difficult problems to investigate. This situation brings considerable difficulties to the study of underground coal gasification under thermo-mechanical coupling. The development of a numerical simulation method for the thermo-mechanical coupling of heterogeneity rock mass under high-temperature burnt conditions can provide an important foundation for related research. On the basis of the variation of mechanical properties of rock mass with temperature, a thermo-mechanical coupling simulation method, which considers the heterogeneity of a rock mass under high temperature, is proposed in this study. A test block experiment is implemented and then applied to the strata movement and failure of underground coal gasification. The results are as follows: (1) The proposed method can truly reflect the heterogeneity of a rock mass under high-temperature environment, providing an effective method for the numerical simulation of geotechnical engineering in high-temperature conditions. (2) The variation of mechanical properties of rock mass after an increase in temperature is the main reason for the change law of strata movement and failure of underground coal gasification. These factors should be considered in the investigation of underground gasification strata movement and failure. The present study can provide an important means for the research on geotechnical engineering in high-temperature environments.

Coal mining can lead to various forms of surface deformation, the damage caused by curvature deformation is the most extensive, which has become the key to restricting the development and utilization of coal resources under villages. Therefore, it is very important to master the deformation and destruction mechanism of buildings under surface curvature deformation for the rational exploitation of coal resources under villages. In this paper, the deformation and damage of buildings caused by curvature deformation are studied with theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, aiming at the shallow foundation building in rural China, and the following objectives are achieved: 1) Based on the theory of elastic foundation beam, the longitudinal and transverse walls are considered as a whole and analyzed, and a mathematical model of the cooperative deformation in building walls under surface curvature deformation is established. 2) The failure mechanism of masonry buildings is analyzed, including the distribution of internal stress and the form of wall cracks. 3) The influence of various factors on the internal stress changes of buildings is discussed. 4) The results of numerical simulation of wall stress distribution are similar to theoretical analysis, and the influence of doors and windows on the additional stress distribution is analyzed emphatically. This study can provide important guidance for the optimization of coal mining design under villages and the protection of village buildings.

As a green, safe, and efficient method of coal development, underground coal gasification (UCG) technology has gradually moved from the experimental stage to the industrial production stage. This technology plays one of the key roles in the sustainable development of resources and energy. However, underground mining will inevitably lead to strata movement and surface subsidence, which will have certain impacts on the surface environment and buildings. Currently, limited research results on strata movement and surface subsidence under high-temperature environments hardly support the further development of the UCG technology. Hence, this study aims at the key problems of UCG strata movement and surface subsidence prediction. The study established a numerical model to analyze the effects of thermal stress and coal–rock burnt on strata movement and surface subsidence. Results show that coal–rock burnt caused by high temperature has greatly changed the characteristics of UCG strata movement and surface subsidence and is the main controlling factor for aggravating the strata movement and surface subsidence of UCG. The coordinated deformation calculation method of the UCG cavity roof-coal pillar-floor is formed. Moreover, the cooperative subsidence space is regarded as the mining space. A prediction model of surface subsidence based on continuous-discrete medium theory is also established using the probability integral method. The reliability of the predicted model is proved by comparing the measured value with the predicted value.

Underground mining causes the ground to deform, leading to the destruction of buildings. Horizontal strain is one of the most important causes of damage to strip foundation buildings. However, related research is insufficient and the mechanism behind building damage caused by horizontal strain remains unclear, resulting in several difficulties in performing coal mining under villages. In this study, interface slip and soil pressure caused by the horizontal strain of ground transfer between soil and buildings are investigated, and stress concentration in buildings driven by soil movement is considered the primary cause of building damage. The influences of the mechanical parameters of soil and the geometric parameters of a building on stress distribution inside a building are analyzed by establishing a stress distribution model of a building under different ground horizontal strains. Softening the foundation or designing deformation joints inside a building can reduce the influence of horizontal strain on a building. This research can provide an important reference for performing coal mining safely under villages and designing building protection against ground horizontal strain.

The surface deformation caused by underground coal mining will cause great damage to the surface buildings. Especially for the strip foundation buildings, the surface horizontal deformation will cause the walls to crack and open, threatening the safe use of buildings. However, there is lacking research on the failure mechanism of strip foundation buildings caused by surface horizontal deformation. Therefore, it is particularly important to study the mechanism. In this paper, a mechanical model of additional stress distribution in the strip foundation under surface horizontal deformation is established. Based on the model, the internal stress variation characteristics of the longitudinal wall of strip foundation buildings are studied with different factors: friction coefficient, surface curvature, foundation load and foundation length under the surface horizontal deformation. The internal stress variation of the transverse wall of the strip foundation buildings is analysed. The theory is verified by numerical simulation and a case study from Fengfeng coalmine China. Finally, the protection methods of the strip foundation buildings under the surface horizontal deformation are proposed.
