Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest malignancies characterized by strong resistance to almost all chemotherapeutic agents and radiotherapy. In this study, we aimed to investigate the anticancer effect, enzymatic antioxidant activity [superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx)] and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of synthesized benzothiazole compounds against adenocarcinoma cancer cells (PANC-1). 2-((1S,2S)-2-((E)-4-nitrostyryl)cyclopent-3-en-1-yl)benzo[d]thiazole and 2-((1S,2S)-2-((E)-4-fluorostyryl) cyclopent-3-en-1-yl)benzo[d]thiazole containing 2-substituted benzothiazole group were synthesized in two steps. PANC-1 cells were treated with different concentrations of benzothiazole compounds (5, 25, 50. 75 and 100 μM) for 48 h and their cytotoxicity effects were determined by the MTT assay. To determine whether these compounds induced apoptosis, PANC-1 cells were treated with increasing concentrations of the synthetic products. Our study showed that the synthesized compounds have antiproliferative effects against PANC-1 cells and reduced cell viability. These compounds induced apoptosis of pancreatic cancer cells and at the same time reduced the activity of SOD and GPx and reduced TAC. On the basis of these findings, these synthesized benzothiazole compounds may be considered as a potential therapeutic drug against human PANC-1 cancer cells.

Neonatal sepsis is a clinical condition that results in serious morbidity and mortality unless urgently diagnosed and treated. Obtaining the results of blood cultures to determine the causative agent in sepsis is a time-consuming process. The CRP/albumin ratio is an inflammatory marker that has started to be used in recent years. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between CRP/albumin and Gram-negative bacterial sepsis in neonates. This study was conducted on 112 premature neonates with sepsis. The patients were divided into two groups according to culture results as Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial sepsis. The laboratory and demographic features of the patients were obtained from the hospital records. A receiver operating characteristic curve was plotted to evaluate the predictive value of the CRP/albumin ratio for Gram-negative sepsis. CRP/albumin was significantly higher in the Gram-negative group (p35.17, which had a specificity of 97% and sensitivity of 56% (AUC=0.839; 95% CI: 0.743–0.944; p<0.001). A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that CRP/albumin (OR=1.082, 95% CI: 1.033–1.134, p=0.001) and absolute neutrophil count (OR=1.145, 95% CI: 1.000–1.312, p=0.049) were still associated with Gram-negative sepsis after adjustment for variables found to be statistically significant in univariate analysis and correlated with Gram-negative sepsis. The CRP/albumin ratio is independently related to Gram-negative sepsis in neonatal sepsis and may be useful in predicting Gram-negative bacteremia.

This retrospective study aimed to assess the association of the volume and types of the sphenoid sinus with deviated nasal septum by analyzing multislice computed tomography images. A total of 93 patients with a deviated nasal septum and 70 healthy controls were included in the study. Patients with sinonasal morbidities other than deviation were excluded. Three-dimensionally reconstructed computed tomography images of the study participants were acquired. A total of 326 sphenoid sinus volumes from the patient and control groups were obtained and compared between the groups. Sphenoid sinus volumes and the angle of the deviation were measured for standardization and assessment of the severity. Deviated nasal septum was found on the right in 49.5% (n = 46) and on the left in 50.5% (n = 47) of the study participants. Deviation angles were in the range from 7.2° to 22.4° and the mean value was 13.2° ± 5.0°. The measured volumes were in the range from 1.8 cm3 to 9.6 cm3 with a mean of 4.8 ± 1.5 cm3. In the control group, the median values for the sphenoid sinus volumes were 4.40 cm3 (0.80–8.90 cm3) on the right and 4.20 cm3 (0.90–8.70 cm3) on the left. In the study group, sphenoid sinus volumes were found to be statistically significantly different between those on the ipsilateral and contralateral side of the septal deviation. Sphenoid sinus volumes were significantly smaller on the same side with septal deviation compared with those on the contralateral side. There was no statistical relationship between the presence of septal deviation, age and gender, and the type of sphenoid sinus.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical properties of modified Kessler, Bunnell and Tsuge techniques in sheep Achilles tendon tear repaired using polyester and polydioxanone sutures which are also compared. Methods: Sixty sheep Achilles tendons were cut transversely as a substitute for rupture and repaired using modified Kessler, Bunnell and Tsuge techniques with No. 2 braided polyester and monofilament polydioxanone sutures. Specimens were loaded to failure. Four biomechanical parameters – ultimate strength (US), strength to 2 mm gap (S2G), strength to 5 mm gap (S5G) and Young’s modulus (YM) – were recorded for statistical analysis. Results: The Tsuge-Polyester group demonstrated the highest results regarding S2G (21.24±4.75 N) (p=.002) and S5G (38.91±7.45 N) (p=.002). According to YM, the Bunnell-Polyester group was the most superior (1929.9±512.28 kilopascal) (p=.009). In the repairs with the polydioxanone suture, Bunnell technique achieved the best purchase with regard to S2G (18.14±6.86 N) (p=.006) and S5G (35.69±13.49 N) (p=.015). The difference between the three repair techniques with the polydioxanone suture was statistically insignificant regarding US (p=.252) and YM (p=.338). Concerning the repairs with the polyester suture, the repair techniques demonstrated no statistically significant difference in terms of US (p=.195), S2G (p=.667), S5G (p=.689) and YM (p=.195). Regarding the mean S2G and S5G values, the polyester suture was significantly superior to the polydioxanone suture in modified Kessler repairs (S2G: p<.001, S5G: p=.001) and Tsuge repairs (S2G: p<.001, S5G: p=.009). The polyester suture was also significantly superior to the polydioxanone suture in the modified Kessler repairs with respect to YM (p=.003). Conclusion: This study supports the opinion that Tsuge technique is a promising procedure in Achilles tendon repair (ATR). For Tsuge and modified Kessler repairs, braided polyester suture use appears more advantageous compared to monofilament polydioxanone suture use in biomechanical terms.
