Due to the contradiction between the high sensitivity requirement and low transmission power of weather radars with solid-state transmitters, a pulse compression technique is necessary. For the purpose of range sidelobe suppression, methods based on amplitude modulation and a mismatched filter are commonly used for target detection radars, which are not applicable for weather observations because of its drawbacks such as main lobe expansion and power loss. This letter presents a nonlinear frequency modulation pulse compression waveform to achieve a very low range sidelobe level. A mathematical model for waveform design is established, in which the time-frequency relation is expressed as the combination of a linear function and a sine series. Thus, a set of parameters can fully characterize the time-frequency curve. By using a simulated annealing algorithm, the optimal parameter set can be obtained, which shows that a peak sidelobe level under -60 dB is achievable. Finally, this kind of waveform is implemented on hardware, and its performance is verified.

Simultaneous fully polarimetric radar uses orthogonal polarization channels to transmit a pair of signals, both of which must have good auto- and cross-correlation characteristics. In this paper, the design of sequences with good correlation properties and Doppler tolerance is investigated. New cyclic algorithms, namely, Cyclic Algorithm-Gradient I (CAGI) and Cyclic Algorithm-Gradient II (CAGII) are proposed to solve the optimization problem. Meanwhile, the sequences designed in this paper have ultra-low auto- and cross-correlation side-lobes in a specified lag interval. Numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate and validate the superiority of the proposed cyclic algorithms, especially for the measurement of moving targets.

To reduce the cost of the polarimetric phased array radar, a novel array architecture conducive to horizontal (H) and vertical (V) polarization is proposed. The H/V polarization ports of each element are synthesized into a new port, of which the polarization is determined by the fixed phase shifter connected to its V polarization port. Then, different polarized elements are arranged properly within the aperture by designing the fixed phase shift of each element. The number of RF electronics is almost halved while the radiation performance can be maintained above 90% for H/V polarization. In this paper, the pattern synthesis model of the proposed architecture is formulated. Based on it, the evaluation function of the element polarization configuration (EPC) is established and optimized. By adopting the optimal EPC results into a 16×16 and a 32×32 planar array, the polarization radiation stability of the proposed architecture is demonstrated under sidelobe and cross-polarization constraints. By applying different quantization levels and phase deviations to the fixed phase shifters, the robustness of the proposed architecture is verified.

The corner reflector is an effective means of interference for radar seekers due to its high jamming intensity, wide frequency band, and combat effectiveness ratio. Properly arranging multiple corner reflectors in an array can form dilution jamming that resembles ships, substantially enhancing the interference effect. This results in a significant decline in the precision attack efficiency of radar seekers. Hence, it is critical to accurately identify corner reflector array. The common recognition methods involve extracting features on the high-resolution range profile (HRRP) and polarization domain. However, the former is constrained by the number of corner reflectors, while the latter is affected by the accuracy of polarization measurement, both of which have limited performance on the identification of corner reflector array. In terms of the evident variations in physical structures, there must be differences in their scattering characteristics. To highlight the differences, this paper proposes a new method based on the concept of mismatched filtering, which involves changing the frequency modulation slope of the chirp signal in the filter. Then, the variance of width and intervals within a specific scope are extracted as features to characterize these differences, and an identification process is designed in combination with the support vector machine. The simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits stable discriminative performance and can effectively combat dilution jamming. Its accuracy rate exceeds 0.86 when the signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 0 dB. Compared to the HRRP methods, the recognition accuracy of the proposed algorithm improves 15% in relation to variations in the quantity of corner reflectors.

Compared to the steady-state part of the extended target echo, few scholars have paid enough attention to the echo establishment and disappearance part. They contain abundant target information, but have not been fully explored and utilized. Since the pulse duration of both parts is typically short, they can be considered as instantaneous processes. Polarization is an inherent property of electromagnetic waves, which can bring information gain to the analysis of the echo instantaneous part. The objective of this study is to utilize the instantaneous polarization response (IPR) of the echo to achieve super-resolution for two targets with different polarization scattering characteristics. It is analyzed that when two target echoes are “equal-amplitude and opposite-phase", echo decoupling can be achieved, which is the precondition for achieving range super-resolution. While making full use of the polarization information is instrumental in achieving the echo with “equal-amplitude and opposite-phase". A trihedral and a dihedral are selected to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Multiple sets of measured data show that the two target echoes do have the instantaneous part. When the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the echo data is about 6-7dB, the range super-resolution and range estimation of the two targets are achieved by using the edge threshold detector.

The cross-polarization isolation (CPI) is a key parameter to assess the dual-polarization antenna because the cross-polarization closely affects the antenna application. A polarization state configuration (PSC) approach is proposed to configure the polarization state of the polarimetric phased array radar antenna. Unlike the traditional fixed polarization states such as the linear polarization (LP) and the circular polarization (CP), the PSC method modulates the polarization state of the radiated wave continuously. In addition, the optimal excitation magnitude and phase of the dual-polarization element is calculated, thereby maximizing the CPI. Most of the configured polarization state is the elliptical polarization (EP), and a lower cross-polarization level and higher CPI could be obtained. This method could expand the acceptable angle range when compared with the LP and CP waves. Numerical simulations and comparisons are conducted to manifest the validity of the proposed method.
