The demand for halal cosmetic products among the 2.4 billion Muslim consumers worldwide is increasing. However, the demand for halal cosmetics remains unmet because cosmetics production is dominated by non-halal cosmetic manufacturers, whose production methods may not conform with the requirements of halal science. The development of halal cosmetics and the assessment of their product performance is still in its infancy. The integration of halal science in the manufacture of most cosmetic products remains inadequate. Moreover, there is a global dearth of guiding documents on the development and assessment techniques in the production of comprehensively halal cosmetics. This paper aims to abridge existing literature and knowledge of halal and cosmetic science in order to provide essential technical guidance in the manufacture of halal cosmetics. In addition, the adoption of these methods addresses the unique ethical issues associated with conformance of cosmetics’ product performance to religious practices and halal science. It highlights the applicability of established methods in skin science in the assessment of halal cosmetics.

N-Palmitoyl-Glycine-Histidine (Pal-GH) is a novel low molecular weight gelator. In our previous report, ivermectin, a lipophilic drug, was effectively delivered to skin tissue after topical application with Pal-GH as a spray gel formulation, and a much higher skin concentration was confirmed than with the administration of a conventional oral formulation. The objective of this study was to increase the skin permeation of metronidazole (MTZ), a hydrophilic drug, after the topical application of Pal-GH gel. An evaluation of the combined effect of chemical penetration enhancers (CPEs), such as isopropyl myristate (IPM), propylene glycol (PG), ethanol, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), on skin permeation was also conducted. We found that a 5% Pal-GH gel containing 1% MTZ (F5MTZ) exhibited a 2.7-fold higher MTZ permeation through excised hairless rat skin than its solution. Furthermore, F5PG-MTZ and F5IPM-MTZ further increased the skin permeation of MTZ when compared to F5MTZ. Interestingly, F5PG-MTZ enhanced the skin penetration of MTZ, although no enhancement effect was observed for an MTZ solution containing PG. Thus, a Pal-GH formulation containing PG and IPM may enhance the skin permeation of MTZ.

Ethyl acetate fraction of the Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg extract have a potency to treat the cardiovascular diseases have poorly solubility in water. The purpose of this study was to improve the solubility of the extract. One of method to improve the solubility of the extract by mixing with cyclodextrin polymers and their derivatives. Hydroxyl propyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as a water-soluble polymer can enhance the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) activity. Three comparisons extract and ß-cyclodextrin were: 1:2, 1:4, and 1:6 by mixing with the addition hydroxyl propyl methylcellulose 0.12%of the total weight of extract and β-CD for each formula. The sample was prepared by kneading method. The sample characterization was used Karl Fischer titration, Scanning Electron Microscopy and solubility study.Content of total flavonoid from the extract was 32.7%. The Result showed that the addition polymer combination of β-CD + HPMC caused increasing the solubility of extract in water7.04% (F1), 19.47% (F2) and 59.92% (F3) compared to extract control with significant differences at level of confidence 95% (p ≤ 0.05).
