Liquid crystals, compounds and mixtures with positive dielectric anisotropies are reviewed. The mesogenic properties and physical chemical properties (viscosity, birefringence, refractive indices, dielectric anisotropy and elastic constants) of compounds being cyano, fluoro, isothiocyanato derivatives of biphenyl, terphenyl, quaterphenyl, tolane, phenyl tolane, phenyl ethynyl tolane, and biphenyl tolane are compared. The question of how to obtain liquid crystal with a broad range of nematic phases is discussed in detail. Influence of lateral substituent of different kinds of mesogenic and physicochemical properties is presented (demonstrated). Examples of mixtures with birefringence ∆n in the range of 0.2–0.5 are given.
So far, it has proven impossible to achieve an acceptable dark state between crossed polarizers for antiferroelectric liquid crystals (AFLCs), which otherwise would have an enormous potential for electro-optic applications, in particular for high-resolution full color displays. The reason lies in static and dynamic spatial fluctuations of the optic axis. As both have intrinsic causes it is not likely that the problem is ever going to be solved by improvement in alignment and addressing methods. We show that if the directors in alternating layers are orthogonal to each other, the AFLC acquires new optical properties such that the problem is eliminated, and a dark state extinction is achieved which is only limited by the quality of the polarizers. After having synthesized such a material, we have been able to demonstrate the predicted unique electro-optical properties of this new class of AFLC materials.

High birefringence (0.3 < Deltan < 0.4) and relatively low-viscosity liquid crystal mixtures containing isothiocyanato tolane and isothiocyanato terphenyl liquid crystals are developed. A twisted-nematic (TN) 1.6-mum thin cell for color-sequential liquid crystal display with ~1-ms response time is demonstrated.
Antiferroelectric liquid crystals with a tilt angle of 45 degrees have very interesting optical properties, which seem to have been overlooked so far - perhaps because such materials have hardly been available. We have prepared a four-component mixture of partially fluorinated compounds with a SmCa* phase in the interval between 27.4°C and 121.6°C, in which the tilt angle θ saturates at 45 degrees for T≤80°C, and we investigate the optical properties, theoretically and experimentally. One of the surprising features of 45 degree materials is that they permit a remarkably high contrast by virtue of an excellent dark-state, in spite of the fact that AFLC materials are notoriously difficult to align. This is because a 45° AFLC turns out to be (negatively) uniaxial instead of biaxial. We describe these properties and propose a number of potentially interesting new applications, including a polarizer-free display mode and a three-level “phase-only” modulator.
Thermodynamical, optical, dielectric and electro-optical characterisation of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) and silver nanoparticle (NP) composites have been carried out. Transition temperatures of pure and composites systems have been measured. Thermodynamical studies suggest increase of clearing temperature of the composite material as compared to the pure material. Threshold voltage for switching from bright to dark state and splay elastic constant of the pure and composite materials have been determined. From frequency dependence of dielectric measurements, permittivity, loss, relaxation frequency and dielectric strength of flip-flop mechanism of LC molecules in the nematic phase have been calculated. Dielectric properties of composites have been explained in reference of Maier and Meier theory. The effects of doping of NPs on dielectric and electro-optic properties of LC-NP composites have been discussed.
