In recent decades, many EU and national regulations have been issued in order to increase the energy efficiency in different sectors and, consequently, to reduce environmental pollution. In the building sector, energy efficiency interventions are usually based on the use of innovative insulated materials and on the installation of cogeneration and tri-generation units, as well as solar technologies. New and retrofitted buildings are more and more commonly being called “smart buildings”, since they are characterized by the installation of electric and thermal power generation units, energy storage systems, and flexible loads; the presence of such technologies determines the necessity of installing Building Energy Management Systems (BEMSs), which are used to optimally manage their operation. The present paper proposes a BEMS for a smart building, equipped with plants based on renewables (photovoltaics, solar thermal panels, and geothermal heat pump), where the heating and cooling demand are satisfied by a Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning System (HVAC) fed by a geothermal heat pump. The developed BEMS is composed of two different modules: an optimization tool used to optimally manage the HVAC plant, in order to guarantee a desired level of comfort inside rooms, and a simulation tool, based on an equivalent electric circuit model and used to evaluate the thermal dynamic behavior of the building. The paper describes the two modules and shows the main results of the validation phase that has been conducted on a real test-case represented by the Smart Energy Building (SEB) located at the Savona Campus of the University of Genoa, Italy.

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are growing in importance Power Systems. Battery Electrical Storage Systems (BESS) represent fundamental tools in order to balance the unpredictable power production of some Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Nevertheless, BESS are usually remotely controlled by SCADA systems, so they are prone to cyberattacks. This paper analyzes the vulnerabilities of BESS and proposes an anomaly detection algorithm that, by observing the physical behavior of the system, aims to promptly detect dangerous working conditions by exploiting the capabilities of a particular neural network architecture called the autoencoder. The results show the performance of the proposed approach with respect to the traditional One Class Support Vector Machine algorithm.

The aim of this paper is to describe the system composed by the SPM (Smart Polygeneration Microgrid) feeding the SEB (Sustainable Energy Building) at the University of Genoa (Savona Campus), and to assess the Campus operating costs, CO 2 emissions, and primary energy annual savings determined by the combined SPM-SEB system. This work highlights the main difference between two scenarios (AS-IS and TO-BE) with specific reference to operation and management of various power units. As demonstrated by the work, besides research and testing of new devices, the SPM-SEB can be used also for demonstration and teaching activities, and contributes to increase the overall energy efficiency of the Campus, lowering its primary energy consumption.

The large spread of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and the related cyber-security issues introduce the need for monitoring. The proposed work focuses on an anomaly detection strategy based on the physical behavior of the industrial process. The algorithm extracts some measures of the physical parameters of the system and processes them with a neural network architecture called autoencoder in order to build a classifier making decisions about the behavior of the system and detecting possible cyber-attacks or faults. The results are quite promising for a practical application in real systems.
