In today’s competitive markets, the role of human resources as a sustainable competitive advantage is undeniable. Reliable hiring decisions for personnel assignation contribute greatly to a firms’ success. The Personnel Assignment Problem (PAP) relies on assigning the right people to the right positions. The solution to the PAP provided in this paper includes the introducing and testing of an algorithm based on a combination of a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) and a Genetic Algorithm (GA). The evaluation of candidates is based on subjective knowledge and is influenced by uncertainty. A FIS is applied to model experts’ qualitative knowledge and reasoning. Also, a GA is applied for assigning assessed candidates to job vacancies based on their competency and the significance of each position. The proposed algorithm is applied in an Iranian company in the chocolate industry. Thirty-five candidates were evaluated and assigned to three different positions. The results were assessed by ten staff managers and the algorithm results proved to be satisfactory in discovering desirable solutions. Also, two GA selection techniques (tournament selection and proportional roulette wheel selection) were used and compared. Results show that tournament selection has better performance than proportional roulette wheel selection.

This research analyses the relationship between Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) and E-commerce with innovation and impact on performance in a sample of Spanish firms. Two models of analysis have been built. One focuses on the influence of technology usage on innovation and the other focuses on the effect of innovation on firm performance. Results outlined that AMT and e-commerce influence significantly the different innovation dimensions, such as the number and intensity of product and process innovations as well as organisational methods. This study shows how the use of AMT and ecommerce leads to higher levels of product, process, organisational and commercial innovation. In addition, innovation influences significantly and positively firm performance.

Blockchain aims to transform businesses and other forms of transactions from a centralized, human-based to a shared, algorithm-based trust model, which enables a new risk management paradigm. Misaligned incentives in different principal – agent scenarios are important risk factors from governance point of view. With blockchain, these misalignments are accounted for algorithmically, therefore novel governance models are possible. What role do risks play in terms of deciding for, or against the adoption of blockchain? How to best define requirements to achieve it? This paper explores standards and risk as factors, which can support or hinder the sustained application of blockchain in a broad scope of environments. We conducted a systematic literature review that outlines a current understanding of perceived risk surrounding the adoption and use of blockchain technology in the context of requirements engineering. Furthermore, selected models for managing risks are presented. Finally, areas where deeper research is required are identified. We conclude that a gap exists in normative frameworks that affect the adoption and sustainable use of blockchain technology. Closing this gap can support the sustainable use of blockchain technology.

Global humanitarianism is largely based on the correct management of the humanitarian aid chain. Agility is a concept taken from supply chain management in manufacturing that has been recently applied to humanitarian aid supply chains (HASC) in order to deliver emergency disaster relief. Different actors participate in the HASC (International and local NGOs, governmental institutions and services, army or individual initiatives, among others) whose configurations, processes or goals directly influence the levels of responsiveness, flexibility or agility. In addition, fast changing environments and conditions require different agencies to work with effectiveness even reconfiguring to deliver relief in extreme emergency circumstances. There are plenty of catastrophic disasters sorts which differ in their impact according to multiple variables such as the level of country development, geographical distance to basic resources, political circumstances such as wars or embargos, inclusionary community participation, existence of potential or real epidemics, etc. This complexity involves plenty of difficulties for operational effectiveness as well as for the definition of an aid supply chain strategy. This paper provides an overview of the benefits that the integration of IoT and Blockchain can produce on HASC performance conditions involving resources, processes, outputs, outcomes and impacts.

Understanding the relationships among CO2 emissions, energy consumption, and economic growth helps nations to develop energy sources and formulate energy policies in order to enhance sustainable development. The present research is aimed at developing a novel efficient model for analyzing the relationships amongst the three aforementioned indicators in G20 countries using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) model in the period from 1962 to 2016. In this regard, the ANFIS model has been used with prediction models using real data to predict CO2 emissions based on two important input indicators, energy consumption and economic growth. This study made use of the fuzzy rules through ANFIS to generalize the relationships of the input and output indicators in order to make a prediction of CO2 emissions. The experimental findings on a real-world dataset of World Development Indicators (WDI) revealed that the proposed model efficiently predicted the CO2 emissions based on energy consumption and economic growth. The direction of the interrelationship is highly important from the economic and energy policy-making perspectives for this international forum, as G20 countries are primarily focused on the governance of the global economy.

Digital servitization allows companies to establish specific entry barriers and create isolating mechanisms to maintain their products’ competitive advantage. Rapid linking of technologies with products has introduced new mechanisms to deliver services that complement product offerings. This business environment has significantly affected food companies in the retail sector, where companies have begun to implement and rely on digital solutions to support business operations to fulfill changing market conditions. The study demonstrates how the Covirán cooperative is improving service provision through digital capabilities to generate isolating mechanisms that enable the company to achieve a superior competitive position.

The relationship between organizational commitment and job satisfaction has received plenty of attention in the literature. However, similar studies in growing economies are scarce. The objective of this study is to cover such a gap by introducing an intelligent algorithm for predicting organizational commitment considering job satisfaction as well as comparing its performance to conventional Multiple Linear Regression (MLR). In doing so, data was collected by distributing questionnaires among 200 employees from the food industry in Shiraz (Iran), which represents one of the most dynamic economies of the country. A 73% response rate was achieved. The respondents completed the questionnaire, which assessed six dimensions of job satisfaction (satisfaction with supervision, overall job, company policy and support, promotion and advancement, pay, and coworkers) and organizational commitment. Using MLR, the results indicated that workers’ had higher satisfaction with overall job, company policy and support, and coworkers, bringing about significantly higher employees’ organizational commitment level. An Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) is also developed and tested for the purpose of this study to predict organizational commitment level based on different levels of job satisfaction. Comparing the results obtained from ANFIS and MLR shows that the proposed intelligent algorithm has better performance than conventional MLR and predicts organizational commitment more accurately, based on their root mean square error values (RMSE). A simulation model based on the rules learned by the ANFIS algorithm is also presented to simulate the organizational commitment level of employees by establishing their position on various indexes of job satisfaction. This model can help managers to achieve higher levels of employees’ organizational commitment, since the main aspects of job satisfaction that need more focus are simulated. Different scenarios and situations could be simulated by this system, which is a main contribution of the current work. In terms of presenting an intelligent algorithm in order to predict organizational commitment level based on job satisfaction in food industrial companies, this study is pioneering among other studies.

Purpose: This study examines the relationship between IT implementation and performance with manufacturing flexibility based on a sample drawn from a set of manufacturing firms.Design/methodology/approach: The relationships were analyzed using structural equations modeling (SEM) using EQS 6.2 software. Previously, an explanatory factor analysis confirmed one-dimensionality of the scales, Cronbach’s alpha was calculated to evaluate its internal consistency and a confirmatory factor analysis was run to observe scales’ validity.Findings: This research proves a significant positive and direct effect of IT implementation on operations performance with 4 out of 6 flexibility dimensions (Machine, Labour, Material handling and Volume). Mix and Routing flexibility dimensions show no significant impact on firm performance.Research limitations/implications: It is necessary to be cautious when generalizing these findings, as service firms were not part of the sample even when statistical results prove robustness suggesting that the findings are quite reliable. Some flexibility dimensions show no significant impact in performance (Routing and Mix flexibility). This is consistent with the fact that these flexibility dimensions act as variability absorbers within the manufacturing process.Originality/value: This research proves a significant positive and direct effect of IT implementation on operations performance. Results show not only the links between IT implementation and operations performance, but also the magnitude of every impact. The model considers IT integration as the degree of alignment that existing technology resources in a firm have with the business strategy, in terms of importance and support for this strategy.

Turbulence and competitiveness define the current global business environment. Firms need to develop high quality products and services quickly and at lower costs than competitors by improving their internal operations as well as focusing on core activities while outsourcing non-core activities. This increasing competition forces firms to integrate their suppliers and customers into the overall value chain processes. To achieve this integration, sharing relevant information among components of the supply chain becomes crucial. Moreover, in these situations, information and communications technologies play a central role by allowing information sharing among suppliers and customers through facilitating information availability and reducing the bullwhip effect and improving quality. The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, it intends to provide an extensive theoretical framework on Supply Chain Management process integration. Secondly, e-business is presented as a SCM integration processes enhancer, and thirdly, some practical implications for managers are provided.

Outsourcing is a widely extended practice for many industries competing at the global level. Through outsourcing, firms are able to clearly define their core field of activities while transferring non-core activities to organizations enabled to perform them with higher degrees of efficiency. However, outsourcing is not exempted from some risks, especially those derived from process coordination, information sharing, or oportunistic behaviours. Operations flexibility can play a fundamental role in moderating these risks while increasing the benefits from outsourcing by decreasing the level of dependence on the outsourced activities. In this paper, a structural analysis is performed to analyse the relationship between operations flexibility and outsourcing benefits in service firms. Results show that higher levels of flexibility in the informations systems, markets, expansion, and personnel dimensions are directly related to higher outsourcing benefits.
