This study examines the association between CEO temporal focus and corporate engagement in philanthropy, and considers the moderating role of ownership. This association is investigated based on upper echelons theory and the conceptual framework of temporal focus. Using a sample of 2,285 observations of Chinese listed firms from 2010 to 2015, our results show that the relationship between CEO past focus and corporate philanthropy is positive in state-owned firms but negative in private firms. In addition, CEO future focus is negatively associated with charitable activities in state-owned firms, but positively associated with such activities in private companies. For present-oriented CEOs, the relationship between temporal focus and philanthropy is negative in both public and private firms, but the negative effect is stronger in private firms. The findings of this study show how CEOs’ time perspectives shape their decisions on company engagement in philanthropic projects.

Resilience captures firm capability to adjust to and recover from unexpected shocks in the environment. Being latent and path-dependent, the manifestation of organizational resilience is hard to be directly measured. This article assesses organizational resilience of firms in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic with pre-shock corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance as a predictor that positively influences the level of organizational resilience to the external shock caused by the pandemic. We develop three theoretical mechanisms based on stakeholder theory, resource-based theory, reputation perspective and means-end chain theory to explain how CSR fulfillment in the past could help firms maintain stability to adapt to and react flexibly to recover from the crisis. We examine the relationship in the context of the systemic shock caused by COVID-19, using a sample of 1597 listed firms in China during the time window from 20 January 2020 to 10 June 2020. We find that companies with higher CSR performance before the shock will experience fewer losses and will take a shorter time to recover from the attack.

This study links the gender diversity of the top management team (TMT) to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and examines the moderating role of the marketization level in their relationship. According to the token theory, females are “tokens” and have difficulty playing their roles when they are rare in groups, where their presence is used for providing legitimacy. Meanwhile, CSR is implemented to gain legitimacy. Therefore, we predicted that there was a negative relationship between female top managers and CSR, and that the marketization level positively moderated their relationship. The hypotheses were supported by the data from 17,032 manager-year observations of listed companies in China. The results indicated that the female top managers’ presence and CSR performance had the same function of gaining legitimacy. With limited resources, firms added females at the expense of decreasing investment in CSR when under the external pressure of increasing female top managers. Furthermore, this negative relationship was stronger in firms with a less-developed institutional environment because firms with weak institutions have strong incentives to find alternatives to fill the institutional void, which helps to gain access to resources and reduce transaction costs.

Purpose Emotions and emotional labor play a crucial role in professional interactions. Due to the increasing participation share of women managers in the workforce, especially in the customer-oriented service context, this study adopts a multilevel approach and mobilizes person–job fit theory to investigate whether the emotional labor of female managers influences the association between customer orientation and job satisfaction in frontline employees in a services setting. Design/methodology/approach The participants were 124 immediate female managers working in bank branches and their 896 customer-facing employees in China. Findings The results show that the positive relationship between customer orientation and job satisfaction in frontline employees is strengthened by increases in female managers' deep acting, but it is weakened with the increase in their surface acting. Research limitations/implications The study findings provide support for scholars and financial service organizations as they seek to better understanding the dynamics behind the mobilization of women's emotions and their extent. In term of limitations, the data were taken from a single type of organization located in the northern cities of China, so it can be expected that the findings of this study will not generalize to all contexts. Originality/value This paper is the first to investigate female managers' emotional labor employing a cross-level analysis in financial services setting.

This study aims to assess the impact of circular economy on economic growth. In the process of rapid economic growth, China has been facing with the pressure of insufficient supply of resources and environmental pollution, which makes the development model of circular economy (CE) an imperative transformation. China has carried out two batches of CE pilot cities to promote the construction of ecological economy and change the traditional economic development model, which is employed as a quasi-natural experiment in this study. The effect of this CE policy on the local economic growth is explored using the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method and Difference-in-Differences (DID) model and a panel data of 163 Chinese cities from the year of 2001–2012 has been used. The results show that the growth rate of GDP of the pilot cities decreases significantly but the economic decline gradually recovers as time goes on. In addition, this study further conducts the regional heterogeneity analysis to compare the economic growth of CE pilot cities in three economic zones, i.e., eastern, central and western economic zones, and the sectoral heterogeneity analysis to compare the economic growth of three main industries, i.e., primary, secondary and tertiary industries. Finally, discussion of above results is presented and recommendations for the promotion of urban CE are proposed.

Measuring changes in energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions of various large economies is fundamental for analyzing the impact and effectiveness of various policies in this direction. This study analyzes intertemporal changes in energy and CO2 emissions efficiency of economies by applying a network data envelopment analysis approach that takes into consideration the internal structure of the analysis units. We have applied two divisional network data envelopment analysis models for analysis of the economic and distributive efficiency of economies from 2001 to 2011. The results are very useful in analyzing the situation; we found that none of the economies was efficient in both aspects in the sample period, implying that none of the countries in the analysis was efficient in the production and distribution of economic outputs simultaneously. Brazil, Canada, China and Germany showed improvement in economic efficiency but the distribution efficiency of the most of the economies is low because of the increase in population and high-income class. Most of the countries had an increase in the high-income class but China performed better in the second division because it has managed to improve its middle-income class in the recent past by moving more people from low-income class to middle income class. It is suggested that countries should emphasize on economic restructuring and expansion of the middle-income class to improve their performance in the production and distribution of economic outputs.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) concepts are spread out in different organizations and cultures. To comprehend the Muslim consumers’ perception of CSR, this study conducted a self-administered survey in two Muslim-culture-rich countries, Pakistan and Sudan. Combined with previous studies and Carroll’s pyramid of CSR, this study shows that Muslim consumers have more supportive responses toward CSR compared to consumers of Western, developed countries. The findings of the study also reveal that Carroll’s pyramid of responsibilities could be applied in the Muslim culture, as the relative importance placed by Muslim consumers on the four responsibilities of firms—economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic—is significantly different from that in Western, developed countries. These differences provide useful guidance for firms intending to use CSR for strategic purposes in Muslim countries. The reasons for these phenomena are also discussed.

How can chief executive officers (CEOs) persuade employees to participate in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, so as to enhance firms’ corporate social performance (CSP)? The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between CEO rhetorical strategies and firms’ CSP. According to Aristotle’s classification, we divide CEO rhetorical strategies into three categories: pathos, ethos, and logos, using the text analysis method. We apply a Probit model to predict whether CEOs use rhetorical strategies and then adopt fixed-effect multiple regression models to measure the impact of various rhetorical strategies on CSP. An empirical analysis based on data on the listed manufacturing companies in the Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange from 2014 to 2016 shows that both CEO pathos strategy and CEO logos strategy have positive effects on CSP; however, the relationship between the CEO ethos strategy and CSP is not significant. Our findings contribute to upper echelons theory and CSR research and provide suggestions for CEOs to apply proper rhetorical strategies.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine how qualitative case research (QCR) has been conducted in the field of international entrepreneurship (IE) in terms of onto-epistemology and methodology. QCR can serve as an umbrella approach for contextualizing and capturing the complexity of IE opportunities, events, conditions and relationships, and to illuminate and enrich the understanding of related IE processes.Design/methodology/approachA thorough literature review was conducted of IE journal articles published between 1989 and mid-2017. This paper identified and analyzed 292 journal articles in terms of theoretical purpose and research design.FindingsThe findings suggest that the “positivistic” QCR is the customary convention of QCR in IE. “Exploratory” and “theory building” are the two most commonly pursued objectives. There have also been atypical practices and increased methodological rigor in recent years. Alternative paradigmatic QCRs that depart from positivistic assumptions are in an early stage of development in IE.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first research examining QCR onto-epistemology and methodology approaches in IE, providing a useful state of the art that has been hitherto lacking in the literature. Based on this paper’s findings, the authors suggest that the IE field would benefit from greater methodological transparency in the reporting and writing of QCR. Also, the breadth of knowledge and legitimacy of the IE area would be enhanced through more studies involving unconventional (beyond positivistic) QCR.

This study attempts to investigate the influence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on firm value. Drawing upon stakeholder theory and a resource-based view, we argue that corporate social responsibility is expected to positively affect firm value because it helps firms gain positive stakeholder responses. Based on longitudinal data of Chinese manufacturing firms listed at Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange between 2010 and 2015, we use multiple linear regression to find that corporate social responsibility has a positive relationship with firm value and that the relationship between CSR and firm value is weakened for firms with higher advertising intensity, as CSR by these firms gains negative stakeholder responses. State-owned firms were shown to benefit more from CSR, as CSR by these firms gains positive stakeholder responses for such firms.

Will the top managers’ attention to financial goals such as profit targets, operating expenses or debt payback schedule affect the firm’s innovation investment? The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the attention that the top management team (TMT) allocate on financial goals and R&D investment in Chinese firms. The roles of ownership type and company size as moderating effects in the relationship were also analyzed. This study used a panel dataset of 484 firms listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange from 2010 to 2014. The results show that TMT’s attention to monetary objectives was negatively related to the R&D investment. In the state-owned and large-scale enterprises, the negative relationship between the TMT’s financial orientation and R&D investment is weak compared to that in private companies and smaller enterprises, respectively. Several conclusions have been drawn. First, the attention paid by TMT to financial goals significantly affects the innovation investment of the company. Specifically, when executives press the importance of monetary targets, they reduce innovation investment, given that the effects of firm-specific characteristics are controlled. Second, corporate ownership significantly moderates the relationship. Given the same degree of attention bias toward financial targets, compared with those in private companies, executives in state-owned companies tend to be more willing to invest in corporate innovation activities. Third, as the size of the company increases, the company’s comprehensive strength and ability to resist risks would increase, which in turn raises the willingness to undertake high-cost and long-term-to-realize-benefit innovation activities, thus alleviating the effect of TMT’s pressure on financial performance.

This study attempted to investigate the influence of managerial humanistic attention on corporate social responsibility. Drawing upon humanistic value, upper echelons theory and behavior decision theory, we developed and tested hypotheses using secondary from manufacturing firms listed at Shanghai Stock Exchange from year 2010 to year 2014. This study showed that managerial humanistic attention can positively affect corporate social responsibility and corporate social responsibility was found to be influenced by firm characteristics. Specifically, the relationship between managerial humanistic attention and corporate social responsibility was stronger: when a firm was older; was bigger; and had more slack resources.

This paper examines how entrepreneurial optimism and performance are related in two emerging economies, Laos and Kenya, by exploring the relationship between optimism and performance. The moderating effects of education and motive (opportunity vs. necessity) on the stated relationship are tested. By analysing a sample of 380 entrepreneurs in the two countries, we found that, unlike in Western countries where optimism generally leads to negative outcomes, optimistic entrepreneurs in emerging economies tend to perform better. Our results also suggest that when optimism is held constant, entrepreneurs motivated by opportunity outperform those who are motivated by necessity. However, education appears to have negative effect on entrepreneurial performance. Additionally, the above effects were found to be stronger for entrepreneurs from Laos than those from Kenya, which could be attributed to different religious beliefs. Findings, implications and limitations are discussed.

Drawing on conservation of resources theory, this study examined the link between negative mentoring experiences (i.e., interpersonal problems) perceived by mentors and their work-family conflict (WFC) by focusing on the mediating role of emotional exhaustion and the moderating role of revenge. The results of a field survey of 187 mentors in China supported all of our hypotheses, indicating that interpersonal problems perceived by mentors were positively related to their WFC. This relationship was also found to be mediated by the mentors’ emotional exhaustion. In addition, revenge against protégés was found to moderate the main effect of interpersonal problems on emotional exhaustion and the indirect effect of interpersonal problems on WFC. Specifically, revenge exacerbated the positive relationship between interpersonal problems and emotional exhaustion. Further, emotional exhaustion mediated the indirect effect of interpersonal problems on WFC when the level of revenge was high, but not when it was low. The findings of this study provide insightful theoretical contributions and managerial implications that indicate new directions for research related to mentoring and work-family relationships.

Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is a reliability analysis technique that plays a prominent role in improving the reliability and safety of systems, products, and/or services. Although commonly used in quality improvement efforts, the conventional Risk Priority Number (RPN) method has been heavily criticized in the literature for its various limitations, such as in failure mode evaluations, risk factor weights, and RPN computation. In this article, we describe the application of an ELECTRE (ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la REalité)-based outranking approach for FMEA within the interval two-tuple linguistic environment. Considering different types of FMEA team members' assessment information, we employ a hybrid averaging operator to construct the group assessment matrix and use a modified ELECTRE method to analyze the group interval two-tuple linguistic data. Furthermore, the new risk-ranking model deals with the subjective and objective weights of risk factors concurrently, considering the degree of importance that each concept has in the risk analysis. The practicality and applicability of the proposed methodology are demonstrated by applying it to a risk evaluation problem of proton beam radiotherapy, and a comparative study is conducted to validate the effectiveness of the new FMEA approach.

On the basis of upper echelons theory and social learning theory, we examined the direct effects of 2 cognitive characteristics—self-efficacy and risk propensity—on entrepreneurs' innovation in the early stage of entrepreneurial activities. We also investigated the moderating role of gender on these relationships, using data collected from the 2011 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor database, comprising 12,828 entrepreneurs from 44 countries. We found that both self-efficacy and risk propensity were positively associated with innovation. In addition, gender acted as a moderator in the 2 relationships, and both were strengthened when the entrepreneurs were male. We have made 2 main contributions to the literature. First, we investigated the effects of two cognitive factors on innovation from a global perspective. Second, we introduced gender and examined it as a novel moderator in relation to its influence on these relationships.
