The Lower Cretaceous Shahezi shales are the targets for lacustrine shale gas exploration in Changling Fault Depression (CFD), Southern Songliao Basin. In this study, the Shahezi shales were investigated to further understand the impacts of rock compositions, including organic matters and minerals on pore structure and fractal characteristics. An integrated experiment procedure, including total organic carbon (TOC) content, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), low pressure nitrogen physisorption (LPNP), and mercury intrusion capillary pressure (MICP), was conducted. Seven lithofacies can be identified according to on a mineralogy-based classification scheme for shales. Inorganic mineral hosted pores are the most abundant pore type, while relatively few organic matter (OM) pores are observed in FE-SEM images of the Shahezi shales. Multimodal pore size distribution characteristics were shown in pore width ranges of 0.5–0.9 nm, 3–6 nm, and 10–40 nm. The primary controlling factors for pore structure in Shahezi shales are clay minerals rather than OM. Organic-medium mixed shale (OMMS) has the highest total pore volumes (0.0353 mL/g), followed by organic-rich mixed shale (ORMS) (0.02369 mL/g), while the organic-poor shale (OPS) has the lowest pore volumes of 0.0122 mL/g. Fractal dimensions D1 and D2 (at relative pressures of 0–0.5 and 0.5–1 of LPNP isotherms) were obtained using the Frenkel–Halsey–Hill (FHH) method, with D1 ranging from 2.0336 to 2.5957, and D2 between 2.5779 and 2.8821. Fractal dimensions are associated with specific lithofacies, because each lithofacies has a distinctive composition. Organic-medium argillaceous shale (OMAS), rich in clay, have comparatively high fractal dimension D1. In addition, organic-medium argillaceous shale (ORAS), rich in TOC, have comparatively high fractal dimension D2. OPS shale contains more siliceous and less TOC, with the lowest D1 and D2. Factor analysis indicates that clay contents is the most significant factor controlling the fractal dimensions of the lacustrine Shahezi shale.

Nitrogen adsorption experiments have been extensively applied to shale pore structure research and evaluation. The pore structure can be quantitatively characterized in accordance with the nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm using various calculation models, whereas the results obtained using different models can more effectively indicate the pore characteristics of shale remains unclear. Further, there has not been any unified process in the optimization of calculation models for pore size distribution (PSD). In this study, the Barret–Joyner–Halenda adsorption (BJH-AD) and BJH desorption (BJH-DE) models were used with Longmaxi Formation shale as an example. Subsequently, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted on different shale lithofacies samples. Next, the pore structure parameters and heterogeneity obtained using different models were compared, and the consistency parameters of different models were obtained in accordance with Cronbach’s alpha. The results indicated that the pore structure parameters obtained using the BJH-AD model were underestimated since the macroscopic thermodynamic theory was not applicable to this study. The DFT model showed multiple peaks in the range of 1–10 nm, whereas the BJH-DE model had a significant artificial peak in the range of 3.8 nm due to the tensile strength effect, thus suggesting that the DFT model is more capable of characterizing the pores with a pore size 10 nm lower than the BJH model. The PSD curves generated using the three models exhibited multifractal characteristics, whereas the results of the heterogeneity achieved using different models were different. Moreover, the consistency of the results of different models can be studied in depth by combining Cronbach’s alpha with various heterogeneity parameters. The DFT model exhibited high consistency in pore structure parameters and pore heterogeneity, thus suggesting that the DFT method of N2 is the optimal physical adsorption data analysis method in the shale mesoporous range. Accordingly, the nitrogen adsorption curve, the hysteresis loop shape, multifractal parameters, and Cronbach’s alpha were integrated to generate a working flow chart of the nitrogen adsorption model for N2-adsorption-model optimization.

Organic matter is the material basis of hydrocarbon generation and the abundance of organic matter is a main factor of regional selection and evaluation in shale gas. Also the enrichment is influenced by sedimentary environments. Thus, it is important for the study on the geological factors controlling organic matter enrichment and further to provide scientific basis of regional selection and evaluation by organic matter enrichment area with analysis of the factors. In this paper, the Upper Ordovician–Lower Silurian shale from representative wells in the Upper-Lower Yangtze area is selected as the research object. The goal of this study is to quantitatively calculate the excess siliceous mineral content in shale siliceous minerals and determine the origin of excess silicon based on Al, Fe, and Mn elements; as well as to analyze the sedimentary organic matter enrichment mechanism based on the water body redox environment and bio-productivity. The results show that excess silicon from the Upper Ordovician–Lower Silurian shale in the Upper Yangtze area is biogenic and deposited in closed water bodies. On the one hand, the upper water body contains oxygen, which leads to higher bio-productivity. On the other hand, the lower water body has strong reducibility, which is conducive to sedimentary organic matter preservation. However, the excess silicon in the Upper Ordovician–Lower Silurian shale of the Lower Yangtze area is derived from hydrothermal solution. Hydrothermal activity can enhance the bottom water reducibility, and its nutrient elements can improve bio-productivity and enrich sedimentary organic matter. Therefore, the organic matter enrichment, which depends on the biological productivity and redox conditions, is controlled by the water closure in the Upper Yangtze and hydrothermal activities in the Lower Yangtze respectively. It led to a conclusion that in the process of regional selection and evaluation of shale gas in the Late Ordovician–Early Silurian, it is favorable in the area of relatively strong closure, which is the center of cratonic depression, in the Upper Yangtze and in the hydrotherm-active area, which is the plate connection of the Lower Yangtze and the Cathaysian, in the Lower Yangtze.

The impacts of tectonic deformation on pore structure of the Wufeng-Longmaxi shales in southern China were studied on tectonically deformed shales. Core description, thin-section observation, total organic carbon, X-ray diffraction, low-pressure gas (N2 and CO2) adsorption, mercury intrusion capillary pressure and field emission-scanning electron microscopy experiments were performed. The undeformed shale (UDS), brittle deformed shale (BDS) and ductile deformed shale (DDS) can be sorted based on the variability of original texture, fabric and structure properties of the shale samples. In addition, shale samples with different deformation mechanisms have various pore-structure characteristics. Organic matter pores and interparticle pores in clay minerals are the dominant pore types in the selected shale samples. The BDS sample has a greater proportion of macropores (or micro-fractures), indicating brittle tectonic deformation has a significant effect on the development of macropores in shales. In contrast, the DDS sample has more micropores than the UDS and BDS samples, suggesting ductile tectonic deformation may damage larger pores owing to the compression by complex tectonic stress.
