This study aims to determine serum neopterin, procalcitonin, total sialic acid (TSA), paraoxonase-1 (PON1), and some haematological indices in calves with aspiration pneumonia (ASP). The patient group consisted of 30 calves of the Simmental breed, 0–28 days old, diagnosed with ASP upon clinical examination, anamnesis, auscultation examination, and radiographic results. The control group consisted of 10 healthy calves, otherwise with the same characteristics. A significant difference was found between calves with ASP and the control group of calves in serum iron (Fe, P < 0.001), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC, P < 0.05), PON1, TSA, procalcitonin, neopterin, and total leukocyte count (WBC) indices as a result of the analyses ( P < 0.001). Serum procalcitonin concentration was found to be 285.71 ng/ml in the ASP group and 30.34 ng/ml in the control group. Serum neopterin concentration was found to be 37.68 nmol/l in the ASP group and 15.14 nmol/l in the control group. Serum procalcitonin, neopterin, and TSA concentrations were found to be significantly higher in the ASP group compared to the control group. It was concluded that biomarkers such as serum procalcitonin, neopterin, and TSA are high in calves with ASP, and as a result, these markers provide diagnostically and prognostically important information.

The aim of the study is to evaluate some hematological parameters in healthy Gurcu bucks and female Gurcu goats. The number of studies in this area is very low. In the study, healthy, 2-4 years old, 15 male and 15 female animals were used. From the animals in the study, 10 mL blood samples were taken with the help of holder from Vena Jugularis and transferred to K3EDTA and gel tubes. Complete blood count was measured in a complete blood count device within 30 minutes. Total leukocyte (WBC) was determined as 11.95 x103/µL in females and 8.18 x103/µL in males. Hemoglobin was measured as an average of 7.32 g/dL in females and 8.75 (g/dL) in males. The total protein concentration was determined as an average of 7.40 g/dL in females, 7.26 g/dL in males and a total average of 7.33 g/dL. In addition, the total average concentrations of creatinine, urea nitrogen, albumin, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and glucose, respectively; 0.66 mg/dL, 25.92 mg/dL, 2.56 g/dL, 8.62 mg/dL, 4.37 mg/dL, 2.77 mEq/L and 47.04 mg/dL. In this study, some blood parameters of healthy Gurcu bucks and does, where traditional pasture feeding was made, were determined. Hematological parameters have been determined according to gender and it is important in terms of total average levels.

Traumatic reticuloperitonitis (TRP) and traumatic pericarditis (TP) are disorders that occur because of cows swallowing metal foreign bodies due to malnutrition or different etiological reasons. Foreign bodies cause serious complications by piercing the peritoneum or sinking into the pericardium. This study analyzed the levels of neopterin, procalcitonin, and endothelin-1 and various hematological parameters in blood samples of cows with TRP and TP. This study included 2–7-year-old Simmental cows with TRP (n=35) or TP (n=35) and healthy controls (n=20). Glutaraldehyde tests were used to assess inflammation levels, and radiography confirmed the diagnoses. Total leukocyte count was found to be significantly higher in the TP and TRP groups compared to the control. In addition, while lymphocyte, monocyte and granulocyte counts were found to be higher in the TP group compared to other groups, erythrocyte and hematocrit levels were significantly lower. TP cows had higher neopterin levels than those of TRP and control cows. TRP cows had higher procalcitonin and endothelin-1 levels than those of TP and control cows. These increased levels were diagnostically important. Procalcitonin had the highest sensitivity and specificity for distinguishing between TRP and TP cases. As a result, neopterin, procalcitonin and endothelin-1 levels in cows with TRP and TP were found to be important in confirming the diagnosis and determining the severity of the disease.

This study was conducted to determine serum neopterin and procalcitonin levels in dogs with distemper. The animal material of the study consisted of 35 patients diagnosed with distemper and 15 healthy dogs of different breeds and genders between the ages of 1.5-6 months. Blood cell counts like white blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes (LYM), granulocytes (Gra), red blood cells (RBC), hematocrit (HCT), thrombocytes (THR), gra%, and hemoglobin (Hb) showed a statistically significant difference (P<0.001).Similarly, when the monocyte values of the sick animals were compared with the monocyte values of the animals in the control group, the difference (P<0.01) was seen to be significant. The biochemical parameters urea, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and amylase (AMY) levels of sick animals were compared to those of healthy animals. There was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001) between the two groups.Again, serum GGT and glucose levels of sick animals showed significant differences compared to the same values of healthy animals (P<0.01). While the serum neopterin concentration of the sick animals was 4.94 ± 0.31 nmol/L, the value of the dogs in the control group was determined as 3.02 ± 0.33 nmol/L. When these two values were compared statistically, the difference (P<0.001) was determined to be significant. Similarly, the serum procalcitonin concentration of the sick animals was determined as 65.11 ± 3.12 ng/L, while the serum procalcitonin level of the dogs in the control group was found to be 44.05 ± 3.20 ng/L. When serum procalcitonin values in both groups were compared statistically, the difference (p<0.001) was determined to be significant. As a result, since distemper disease is a multisystemic disease, changes in serum biochemical and hematological parameters were observed separately. In addition, serum neopterin and procalcitonin changes in dogs with distemper were determined to be significantly higher than in the control group (P<0.001). With these results, it was concluded that serum neopterin and procalcitonin biomarkers may play an important diagnostic role in distemper disease, and these parameters were determined for the first time in distemper disease.
