Health literacy refers to individuals’ ability to use medications safely and effectively. Despite easy access to information, university students often engage in irrational drug use. Understanding the relationship between health literacy and medication practices in this population is essential for promoting safe medication behaviors. This study aimed to assess health literacy among university students and its association with rational drug use, considering sociodemographic variables. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 320 first-year students at Kirşehir Ahi Evran University. Health literacy was measured using the Turkish Health Literacy Scale-32 (THLS-32), and rational drug use was assessed with the rational drug use Scale (RDUS). Descriptive statistics and nonparametric tests were used. Significance was set at P < .05. The median age was 20, and 74.1% were female. Most participants were single (96.3%) and had social security (80.6%). The median THLS-32 score was 27.0 (interquartile range: 21.0–36.0), and the median RDUS score was 21.0 (interquartile range: 19.0–24.0). A total of 45.6% had inadequate health literacy, and rational drug use levels were generally low. Health literacy was significantly higher among married students ( P < .05), and rational drug use was higher among medical students ( P < .05). Students from the Black Sea region had significantly higher health literacy than those from other regions ( P < .001). There was no significant correlation between THLS-32 and RDUS scores ( r = 0.02; P = .771). University students demonstrated low levels of health literacy and rational drug use. Sociodemographic factors such as marital status, region, and academic department influenced these outcomes. Educational interventions are recommended to promote health literacy and safe medication practices.

Purpose: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is the disorder of glucose regulation of pregnant women. Its frequency is increas-ing in the world and in our country. Women with GDM are also at risk for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2 DM). The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate the prevalence of GDM and the risk of developing Type 2 DM after delivery in preg-nant women attended routine pregnancy follow-ups in the Internal Medicine and Obstetrics Clinic of Ümraniye Education and Research Hospital between December 2012 and November 2017. Materials and Methods: Data of 32.857 pregnant women were examined from December 2012 to November 2017. 1.108 women with positive GDM results were identified with glucose tolerance tests. Complete medical records of 300 pregnant women were documented for their demographic characteristics. Furthermore, the 5-year postpartum period of these patients was analyzed to identify those who developed Type 2 DM. Results: Hospital data showed a GDM prevalence of 3.37% and an average maternal age of 32.49 years (18-48). Notably, 21% (63 patients) of the GDM group developed Type 2 DM, diagnosed on average 3.1 years later (2-5 years range). Conclusion: The GDM prevalence in our study aligns with data from Turkey and worldwide. Our findings highlights the increased risk of T2DM in patients with a history of GDM and a significant association between advanced maternal age and GDM prevalence. Implementing public health policies focusing on life style modifications and awareness campaigns may help reduce GDM incidence and its long-term complications.

Smoking cessation success in real-world clinical settings remains limited, particularly among individuals with high levels of nicotine dependence. Although smoking cessation clinics are widely used, evidence regarding factors influencing both short- and long-term cessation outcomes is still limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association of nicotine dependence, smoking pattern changes, and sociodemographic characteristics with short-term (6-month) and long-term (12-month) smoking cessation outcomes. This retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Smoking Cessation Outpatient Clinic of Kırşehir Ahi Evran University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. Adult patients who applied to the clinic between June 2023 and June 2024 and completed a 12-month follow-up between June 2024 and June 2025 were included. Sociodemographic characteristics, smoking-related variables, nicotine dependence assessed using the Fagerström test for nicotine dependence (FTND), and psychological characteristics were obtained retrospectively from medical records and self-reported follow-up assessments. Smoking cessation status at 6 and 12 months was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression analyses. At 12 months, 36.1% of participants achieved smoking cessation. Higher levels of nicotine dependence were consistently associated with lower odds of smoking cessation at both 6 and 12 months. Participants with very high nicotine dependence had significantly lower adjusted odds of smoking cessation at 12 months compared with those with very low dependence (adjusted odds ratio, AOR=0.078; 95% CI: 0.03–0.22). Changes in smoking patterns during follow-up, including both increases and decreases in cigarette consumption, were also independently associated with reduced long-term cessation success. Nicotine dependence severity and changes in smoking behavior are key determinants of long-term smoking cessation outcomes in real-world clinical settings. Identifying individuals at high risk of cessation failure may support more individualized follow-up strategies in smoking cessation clinics.

AIM: In our study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the HbA1c values of pregnant women who admitted to Umraniye Training and Research Hospital and diagnosed with GDM and the anthropometric measurements of the newborns. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 200 pregnant women with gestational diabetes between the ages of 18 and 43 with sufficient data were accepted to our study Also, 200 healthy pregnant women formed the control group. The data of both groups were statistically compared. RESULTS:. Gravidity of pregnant women was 1-8 and parity 1-7 and all between 27-42 gestational weeks. HbA1c values ranged from 4.3 to 8.3. The height of the babies was between 30 and 57 cm, birth weight between 800 and 4760 grams, and head circumference between 22 and 65 cm. While 1st minute apgar values varied between 2 and 9, 5th minute apgar values varied between 4 and 10. While 55.3% of the pregnant women had a normal birth, 44.7% of them had cesarean section. 95.5% of HbA1c values were less than 6.5 and 4.5% of them were at least 6.5. 45% of the newborns were girls and 55% were boys. 7% were low birth weight, 87% normal weight and 6% macrosomic. While 21.5% of newborns had complications, 78.5% had no complications. CONCLUSION: The complication rate was higher in pregnant women with GDM and cesarean rate was higher due to increasing birth weight in our study.

Objective: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most commonly prescribed medications in primary care settings. Although they are generally safe when used appropriately, even therapeutic doses can sometimes cause severe adverse effects, such as acute kidney injury (AKI). In this case report, we aim to emphasize the potential nephrotoxic effects of NSAIDs, highlight the importance of early recognition of AKI in outpatient settings, and raise awareness among primary care physicians regarding careful prescribing and monitoring practices for patients using NSAIDs. Case: A 28-year-old male patient with no known chronic diseases, except for a history of allergic conjunctivitis, presented one week after undergoing dental implant surgery. The patient was prescribed antibiotics (amoxicillin-clavulanate) and NSAIDs (dexketoprofen) for postoperative care. He did not have a history of smoking or alcohol consumption. Over the following days, he developed progressive symptoms of loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and persistent toothache, leading to two separate emergency department visits where additional NSAID injections were administered. Despite symptomatic treatment, his complaints persisted and worsened. He subsequently presented to a primary care outpatient clinic, where markedly elevated renal function tests were noted (serum creatinine: 23 mg/dL; eGFR: 2 mL/min; blood urea nitrogen [BUN]: 127 mg/dL; urea: 272 mg/dL; potassium: 6.8 mmol/L). Based on these findings, the patient was promptly referred to a nephrology clinic with a preliminary diagnosis of AKI. Due to the severity of renal impairment and the associated risk of life-threatening complications, he was urgently admitted to the intensive care unit, where a right femoral vein catheter was inserted, and hemodialysis was initiated. Following multiple dialysis sessions and supportive therapy, the patient's renal function returned to baseline levels over two weeks. He was subsequently discharged with recommendations for nephrology follow-up and counseling on avoiding nephrotoxic medications. Conclusion: This case highlights the significant risk of acute kidney injury associated with NSAID use, even at therapeutic doses, in young and otherwise healthy individuals. Primary care physicians must remain vigilant regarding the nephrotoxic potential of NSAIDs, particularly when prescribing these medications postoperatively or in the context of additional risk factors. Early recognition of AKI symptoms and timely referral to specialized care are crucial for preventing irreversible renal damage and improving patient outcomes. Raising awareness about NSAID-induced nephrotoxicity among healthcare providers is essential to minimize preventable cases of drug-related kidney injury.
