Cesare Pianese received a graduate degree cum laude in Mechanical Engineering in 1987 from the University of Naples Federico II (Department of Mechanical Engineering for Energetic). He received a Graduate diploma (Research Master) with honors in Fluid Dynamics from the von Karman Institute (Belgium) (1989/90) and a Research doctorate from the University of Naples in 1992. From 1994 to 2000, Cesare Pianese was a lecturer in Internal Combustion Engines at the School of Engineering of the University of Salerno; since March 2001, he has been a professor of Energy Systems and Internal Combustion Engines. From November 1999 to February 2001, Cesare Pianese served as an assistant professor, and from March 2001 to December 2003, he served as an associate professor of Fluid–Machinery at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Salerno. Since January 2004, he has become a full professor (tenured) at the University of Salerno. Cesare Pianese’s main research interests cover the general domain of energy conversions for stationary and mobile applications, with a special interest in the modeling and monitoring of energy systems for management, diagnostics, prognostics, control, and maintenance. Major developments and applications include fuel cells, automotive internal combustion engines, alternative propulsion systems, and non-conventional energy systems.
